Way-Too-Early CFB Top 25 (Pre Spring)

Feb 24, 2020, 10:15 AM

Way-Too-Early College Football Top 25: LSU loses ground, Clemson still No. 1

With spring practice on the horizon, national signing day (both of them) in the rear view, and the FBS coaching carousel finally winding down (apologies to Colorado), it's a great time to update the 2020 Way-Too-Early Top 25 rankings.

The four College Football Playoff teams -- Clemson, LSU, Ohio State and Oklahoma -- continued to get even better with top-10 ranked recruiting classes. While LSU won the national championship, Clemson claimed a recruiting national title with the No. 1 class.

ESPN has also updated their FPI Preseason Top 25 (after NSD and Transfer Portal). Clemson is #1 there, too, but they also have Notre Dame #9, UNC #18, Florida State #23 and Virginia Tech #25.
https://247sports.com/LongFormArticle/ESPN-updates-College-Football-Power-Index-Top-25-for-2020-144148475/#144148475_1

FPI Preseason Top 25
1. CLEMSON
2. OHIO STATE
3. OKLAHOMA
4. ALABAMA
5. PENN STATE
6. Wisconsin
8. Texas A&M
9. Notre Dame
11. Florida
12. LSU
13. USC
14. Oregon
15. Auburn
16. Michigan
17. Oklahoma State
18. North Carolina
19. Tennessee
20. Minnesota
21. UCF
22. Nebraska
23. Florida State
24. Utah
25. Virginia Tech

This means that Clemson had two preseason Top 25 teams on the 2020 schedule:
Oct 10 - 1 Clemson @ 23 Florida State
Nov 07 - 1 Clemson @ 9 Notre Dame
(my analysis here: https://accfootballrx.blogspot.com/2020/02/updated-2020-fpi-preseason-top-25.html)

NOTE: while ESPN FPI has both UNC and Va Tech in the top 25, the Tigers won't play either of them unless it's in the ACC CG (Clemson's cross-division games this year are Ga Tech and UVA - both decent games, but neither one ranked in the preseason).

How does that compare to other CFP contenders?

From ESPN's beloved SEC, #4 Alabama plays #8 Texas AM, #12 LSU, #13 USC, #15 Auburn, and #19 Tennessee... ok, the inclusion of Tennessee may invalid their entire analysis, but still... also, it just hit me that Georgia is NOT ranked in the FPI top 25 (Alabama does play the Bulldogs this year in cross-divisional play).

What about #2 Ohio State? The Buckeyes play #14 Oregon and #5 Penn State.

#3 Oklahoma? The will face #19 Tennessee and #17 Oklahoma State.

So outside of the eSECpn, it looks like playing two teams in the top 25 is actually about right.

What are your thoughts? Is Clemson's 2020 schedule strong enough? Is it ridiculous to have so many SEC teams in the FPI top 25 (including the Vols but NOT the Dawgs)?

So cute, you leave out number 10.

What team is number 10?

We don't name teams who were beat at home by a high school team.

Must've been a Freudian slip - not intentional, I swear!

UGA is not going to like this: "Clemson claimed a recruiting national title with the No. 1 class."

The same team that will once again trip and fall over itself during the regular season , landing squarely on it's hairy ### .

C'mon dude , y'all have to go TO USuC this year ... you can't mark that as a win .

There are only 23 teams on your list ... no Georgia & no Texas. The are quite likely the missing teams, likely #7 and #10 respectively.
