New Story: Mark Fields: South Carolina's loss might be Clemson's gain

Mark Fields: South Carolina's loss might be Clemson's gain

One of the nation's top cornerbacks for the 2015 recruiting cycle has his sights set on a Clemson visit in January, and he told TigerNet on Wednesday what he is looking for out of the visit. Why did he decommit from South Carolina? Why is Clemson still in the loop, along with Texas? Full Story »

Love our chances. He isn't going back to the Coots. They had him , lost him ...now he is just being kind by saying they are still in it. I am certain he would rather stay locally. Clemson should get this kid , he is a fine looking prospect.

Tigerdug, I am not as knowledgable about the ins and outs of recruiting so my opinion may not be right. However, with him keeping the "door open" with the coots, that makes me a little concerned about him re-committing.

Like he said in the article, with himself and Alexander on the corners, the defensive secondary wouldn't miss a beat with teh loss of Smith!

Dec 18, 2014, 7:36 AM

I love his abilities and he seems like a Clemson type player. Would be nice seeing the duo on the field. Alexander and fields. Seems he'd fit better a Clemson . And the Texas coaching staff maybe little shaky also.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It will depend on how much emphasis he places on...

Dec 18, 2014, 8:19 AM

Distance from home so relatives can come see him play more often. If that is a significant factor, then Texas is on the outside looking in.

The fact that he chose Scar before kind of indicates he may value staying closer to home a decent amount - otherwise, why didn't he commit at a more reputable football school like Texas or Bama or Ohio State or Auburn out of state the first time? Now maybe they didn't offer until later after he committed to Scar, so timing could be a factor on this, but if they did, his choice of Scar back then gives a nod to staying close to home.

I agree on the ? stability of the Texas coaching situation. It may not be the most stable either with the problems Charlie Strong has encountered with team discipline, etc. Don't know how patient Longhorn fans will be at this point.

Longhorn fans are loving Coach Strong right now. I think he'll be around for a while...as long as he starts winning...with the bowl game.

I really can't understand why he would even consider going to Texas, a program
that seems at best in turmoil and uncertainty. I do hope we get him. He and
McKenzie Alexander would be a terrible twosome.

I forgot about Tankerseley. Our defense is going to be good for a while! The coaches have spoken highly about both Baker and Tankerseley, so I don't know how much playing time he would get right away.

If he come in in January, I can see him starting next
> fall.

Wanna know something really cool?

If he comes in the summer and becomes the best player at his position, he'd also start for a defense that'll have the benefit of our explosive offense causing teams to resort to desperation "catch-up" mode - aka, obvious passing situations (well above the number in which the average team will be afforded - esp
teams losing big in games like usc jr will be, where opponents simply milk the clock by running the rock on downs 1-3 the entire 4th Q).

Also, I feel like BV is very good at forcing 3rd and longs, moreso than the avg team can manage. And he brings the heat in those situation by mixing up blitz packages to force the QB into either an inaccurate or ill-advised, rushed throw up for grabs during these obvious passing situations.

Fields will be the fortunate recipient of so many obvious passing downs that with Mack locking down the other boundary, this kid won't even be able to keep an accurate count on how many INTs he'll have next year, forget ab pass deflections. He'll have to check espn to keep up with such stats (which is about the only thing they're good for these days)

Moral of the story. Every NFL scout will know the name Mark Fields following the 2015 season, if he becomes a Tiger. Not so much as a jr.

Playoffs.

Dec 18, 2014, 7:49 AM

Because the opponent can't avoid one guy like they are doing now. If the line stuffs the run and the other team HAS to throw, it will be open season for pick offs by these talented DBs. Something that should be a big factor in making their decision to join the ranks.

A Recruiting Triangle ----

Dec 18, 2014, 9:03 AM

You decommit from Chickenlina but yet they're still..... still in the mix? Then why decommit? The coaches there are going to be the same unless Vince Lombardi rises from the grave and says I need a challenge....or Colonel Sanders really wants to do chicken right.

Texas has money in a conference that doesn't have a championship game. But you will get some exposure and Charlie Strong loves defense. That is if Texas is going to be patient with Charlie Strong.

Ah ....then there is Clemson... a true thorn in the SEC's side along with ESPN'S. Got that family atmosphere that no other family atmosphere can touch. The most exciting 25 seconds in college football... the Esso Club...elite graduation rate for athletes...solid coaching staff... hands on alumni groups. Your choice kid but keep in mind its a big one.

Re: New Story: Mark Fields: South Carolina's loss might be Clemson's gain

Dec 18, 2014, 10:13 AM

This might be simpler than many are expecting. South Carolina is imploding, no question about that. The real question is Mark Fields, Jr. looking to compete or start. And those are two different beast. If South Carolina normalizes, which I do not see happening before the recruitment deadline, then he will re-commit to South Carolina because he will more than likely start as a freshmen at South Carolina. Just judging from the November 29th, they are weak in the secondary and we all know they don't coach-up talent. They go out and find it.

Clemson, on the other hand, goes out and recruit talent that seem to fit the mold, works it into the talent they can become, and that talent produces on game day. The two that come to mind is Brandon Ford and most notably and recently, Vic Beasley. Remember what they were slated to play and what they eventually ended up playing. I get many schools do it but I have yet to find one that does it at the level they do it in Clemson.

So if Fields wants to compete for a position and be molded into a great player, come on over, where we as fans know and the alumni of this great institution know....

Man crush. Also, Mack is a film room junkie. Studies hard. Prepares well. Will be great for Fields

Dec 18, 2014, 10:37 AM

To see how much work Mack puts in, to be as great as he is on the field. That's what'll get him to the league. Also, he'll learn how to study tape and what to look for and how to improve, bc Mack learned from Breeland who learned from the Clemson NFL db's before him.

Vic Hampton didn't leave much behind in terms of leading by example over at usc jr.

I think this one is ours to lose. He's visiting campus next month, and we usually make a pretty good impression on campus. Seems like stability is an important factor for him. Our coaches have made it clear that there won't be any monumental shifts in the staff anytime soon. I'm not going to say it never happens, but it's rare for recruits to recommit to a school they've previously decommitted from. I think he could compete for playing time, but he would probably redshirt here. However, his ceiling here is a lot higher because of our coaches and talent along the Dline. Dabo might be the best salesman in the business when it comes to recruits. I think we reel this one in. Very exciting. Getting Fields and Wilkins to commit would round this class out beautifully. (It would be nice if we could flip Bailey as well, though I think that's a long shot.)

Sorry pal, but we don't red-shirt guys who come in ready to help us beat the best teams on our schedule, and who arrive on campus bigger, faster and more talented than what we've already got on campus. I see Fields, Tank, Baker and Mack rotating on and off the field next year so that fatigue won't be factor an issue late in games.

Similar to Peters, Robinson, Breeland and Jenkins. All played a ton every game.

Mack would've started his true freshman year
had he not been injured. At least that was the word out of summer camp. Best players play at Clemson, regardless of seniority.

D Watson says hello.

Re: New Story: Mark Fields: South Carolina's loss might be Clemson's gain

Dec 18, 2014, 1:17 PM

Not saying it couldn't happen, but we're loaded with talented DBs. Marcus Edmond and Korrin Wiggins could both play corner, and they've been in the system for at least a year. I'm not saying he doesn't have the talent to play his freshman year, but he would be competing with a lot of other talented players. The college game is different. You have to be REALLY good to start your freshman year. Mack was different. That guy is a truly elite corner. Those are very rare coming out of high school.
As far as Watson goes, it's a moot point. Two different positions on two different sides of the ball with two different coaches. I'm sure the coaches would have loved to redshirt Watson so he could develop physically (and it wasn't that long ago everybody on these boards was talking about he needed to bulk up to run our system), but...you know...Swag.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Okay, clearly you're not too familiar with Clemson's team. Again, Wiggins plays nickel, not CB.

Dec 18, 2014, 1:41 PM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Mark Fields: South Carolina's loss might be Clemson's gain ]

And although the coaches like Edmond, believe he was a 2-star?

He'll 100% avoid a red-shirt and if, in the event he doesn't beat out Tank or Baker, if one goes down, he's starting.... otherwise he'll be in the rotation. CB's exhaust the most energy on the field having to chase down receivers across the field every play before sprinting back to their pre-snap alignment just to do it all over again.

He'll play in 15, and play a lot. Hate to burst your coot bubble. Do some research next time, though if you're planning to come here to try and steer our potential recruits away ;)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Okay, clearly you're not too familiar with Clemson's team. Again, Wiggins plays nickel, not CB.

Dec 18, 2014, 3:11 PM

What's your point? Blanks played nickel as well before moving to safety. Wiggins has the speed and cover skills to play corner. Just a possibility. There's too many if's to say that anything will or will not happen. I just want to get Fields back on campus.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tiger fans going way overboard on Coot de-commits...

Dec 18, 2014, 1:25 PM

clearly this is simply the kinder, gentler "OBC"...

giving early releases to those 4* hangers-on that wouldn't have contributed anyway is simply bringing new meaning to "SEC speed" - in and out of the program without losing any eligibility.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: New Story: Mark Fields: South Carolina's loss might be Clemson's gain

Dec 18, 2014, 2:08 PM

What is the coaching situation at SC that has him concerned - other than Spurrier being a world class jerk?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Prob the fact that he'll retire in 1-2 years, new coach will bring in 'his guys' replace

Dec 18, 2014, 2:27 PM

the coaches who've taught him a certain way

Plus, the whole learning a new system (like you're a true freshman again) and not being able to let loose at full speed as a result of having to think too much before reacting on the field, would likely portray him as that of an average DB to NFL scouts when his Jr/Sr year rolls around and it's time to impress.

Also, I don't think there's a team in the SEC that throws the ball, and in the rare event that they do, it won't be anywhere in him as he'll be the best CB on the field by a wide margin.

Better to come to Clemson, play opposite Mack, and get plenty more opportunities to showcase his skill set, correct? QB's will be forced to pick their poison.
