On Mickey Plyer and the Davis Twins

Feb 10, 2014, 4:12 PM

Clemson took both of Jeff Davis's son's with gray shirt offers. They are rated at 5.2 on rivals' scale. We have nobody else below a 5.5. They're also the only two-star players. Plyer answered a question on them in his mailbag and seemed almost annoyed and answered with derision when the questioner suggested that this may be a bad case of nepotism.

Is this a legitimate thing to ask about. I mean, you obviously don't want to attack the kids, but if they don't contribute in their tenure (I hope they do and they may) then it absolutely should not be brushed under the rug, but should be an example for the future.

I have more faith in them getting playing time than I had for Mark Richt's son playing QB for us. Maybe they will pan out, maybe they won't, but it seems like this kind of thing goes on in college FB pretty regularly.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They will have 6 years in our program

Feb 10, 2014, 4:16 PM

I am under the impression that they are young for H.S. seniors. They are big all ready. By the time they hit the field they will both probably be over 230 pounds. Also, take one or the other off of Daniel and the remaining twin would have had well over 100 tackles.

ticked me off. Mark Richt can afford to send his kid to college. for CTB and Clemson to pay for was is ridiculous.

Feb 10, 2014, 4:29 PM

lmao. there are a lot of kids that can afford to pay their way. that is not the point. kids work all their lives to be good enough to get a "scholarship". like most every player on the field. the richt kid was ranked high enough to deserve scholarship offers. luckily today our qb's are ranked higher than he was.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our QB's back then were rated much higher than he was.***

Otherwise, they pay their way until they earn one if they ever do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it's fine for him to say he trusts the coaches

Feb 10, 2014, 4:17 PM

Clemson has in recent history had quite a few 2 star guys that developed into big time players for us and played or are currently playing in the NFL.

Coty Sensabaugh, Gains Adams, Andre Branch, etc.

Rankings after 5 and four stars become more and more subjective and 3 and 2 star guys are more projects that could become great or remain mediocre. It falls on the coach to turn them into something and the player to strive to be the best they can be, Shuey is a perfect example of this.

So in the end it's not wrong to question having the Davis twins but in the end I think the coaches have earned our trust in who they bring in.

A) This happens on every college football

Feb 10, 2014, 4:32 PM

team all the time. Would we have offered Richt's kid but for his dad? Daniel Andrews but for Jamie Harper? Some of the Grayson HS kids but for Nkimdiche?

B) If they're both half as good as their dad, they're going to be solid LBs.

C) The Rivals star ranking is not the be all end all of how a kid will perform in college. For every Sammy Watkins there's a Gaines Adams. For every Willy Korn there's an Aaron Kelly.

D) Who cares?

Re: Watched them for 3 years....Physically they are fine.

Feb 10, 2014, 5:21 PM

I hope it works out for them and for Clemson. If they become half the player that their dad was then they will turn out to be very good back ups and be good teammates and very good alumni for Clemson down the road.

Maybe one of the two will be the diamond in the rough.

Now, could it be possible for Clemson to just give his dad a bonus of sorts that his dad could had then turned around and used as his own money to pay for the schollys thus freeing up 2 scholarships?

When Will Swinney graduates Daniel in a couple of years, is Dabo going to give him a scholly or a preferred walk on?

Re: On Mickey Plyer and the Davis Twins

Feb 10, 2014, 5:21 PM

I think you have to go back to what Dabo said. Recruiting rankings should come out after the kids graduate. If the Davis twins do not produce then maybe that will impact future decisions similar to this one. Until then it's difficult to say if this was a good move or a bad one.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo doesn't make many bad recruiting decisions.

I can understand the question. That being said, I think only a person that knows very little about team dynamics would ask it. There are about 100 kids on the football team. Everyone of them brings something to the table. Only someone that has never played competitive sports , doesn't understand that a team needs more than 5 star guys.

The people that are posting this nonsense are hurting the program. I think Dabo and company knows how to "spend their schollies"

On the lack of agressiveness

Feb 10, 2014, 6:25 PM

I noticed it from watching them very briefly but I would call it more a lack of a quick first step. I wondered if this was because they were trying to do to much in the defense like roaming around and trying to make every tackle. When they got on the line of scrimmage to rush the QB their first step looked much quicker. I wonder if when they get in Venables defense they will look faster if only because they know exactly what to do and can trust their teammates to cover the rest of the field, allowing them to be more aggressive. Either way they looked very strong and pretty smart. Could see either being a big Mike like Anthony one day.

DJ Greenlee ( assistant strength coaches son) was 2 star/5.2 recruit also from Daniel, so if nothing else the three should be able to help us recruit Daniel High School.
