Watch Talk - Apple Watch 6
Mar 23, 2021, 8:25 PM
|
|
If you don’t like watches, please don't respond with your talk about how much you Iove your phone and don’t need a watch to tell time. I hate phones.
I think I am about to pull the trigger on an Apple Watch 6. I currently wear a Garmin Tactix all the time, but it’s only good for running and that is about it. I can swap out when running and wear it while charging the Apple 6.
Does anyone have one and like it? Hate it? I tried the Nike Apple Watch last year and I think I expected too much and returned it. Now I am thinking about going back. I realized that with a broken leg and even without, I really don’t care about my steps or goals and stuff. I run enough to take care of all of that. I just like the idea of seeing texts and more info without touching my phone. Did I mention I hate phones? Cause I hate phones.
Thoughts? Opinions?

Had the Apple Watch 3 and loved it. I bought the 6 when only because it added the health stuff - blood oxygen is one. I am a big fan of the Apple Watch - as is Mama G, who uses the ping function to find her iPhone about three times a day. LOL.
Other stuff - I do use the biking (Map my ride) app and walking app in Workout to track exercise, I use timers all the time , and weather of course - Carrot being my favorite.
Also, with cellular service, I can make a call or answer a call ala #### Tracy style - don't use often, but at times it is very nice to have feature.

Like ‘manac I’m not a fan of having to pull out a phone all the time. In a perfect world, I’d keep my phone in my computer bag and just use my watch
How easy is it to text from?

great. Also a quick look at your watch to see who is calling.
Not sure what you mean by 'range', but if you have cellular version, it is like having a 2nd watch - it even gets a phone number that you will never use.

I like the idea of having my boarding passes on there and not having to pull out my phone. Or like you say, simple things, like a text back or weather. I can see all the benefits.
Garmin is far superior with GPS and the running capabilities, however, like I say, I can just switch out and use that for my runs.....when I get back to running

Hello, little man. Boy, I sure heard a bunch about you. See,
Mar 23, 2021, 10:17 PM
|
|
I was a good friend of your dad’s. We were in that Hanoi pit of hell together over five years. Hopefully, you’ll never have to experience this yourself, but when two men are in a situation like me and your Dad were, for as long as we were, you take on certain responsibilities of the other. If it had been me who had not made it, Major Coolidge would be talking right now to my son Jim. But the way it turned out is I’m talking to you, Butch. I got something for you.
This watch I got here was first purchased by your great-grandfather during the first World War. It was bought in a little general store in Knoxville, Tennessee. Made by the first company to ever make wrist watches. Up till then people just carried pocket watches. It was bought by private Doughboy Ernie Coolidge on the day he set sail for Paris. It was your great-grandfather’s war watch and he wore it every day he was in that war. When he had done his duty, he went home to your great-grandmother, took the watch off, put it an old coffee can, and in that can it stayed until your granddad Dane Coolidge was called upon by his country to go overseas and fight the Germans once again. This time they called it World War II. Your great-grandfather gave this watch to your granddad for good luck. Unfortunately, Dane’s luck wasn’t as good as his old man’s. Dane was a Marine and he was killed, along with the other Marines at the battle of Wake Island. Your granddad was facing death, he knew it. None of those boys had any illusions about ever leaving that island alive. So three days before the Japanese took the island, your granddad asked a gunner on an Air Force transport name of Winocki, a man he had never met before in his life, to deliver to his infant son, who he’d never seen in the flesh, his gold watch. Three days later, your granddad was dead. But Winocki kept his word. After the war was over, he paid a visit to your grandmother, delivering to your infant father, his dad’s gold watch.
This watch. This watch was on your daddy’s wrist when he was shot down over Hanoi. He was captured, put in a Vietnamese prison camp. He knew if the gooks ever saw the watch it’d be confiscated, taken away. The way your dad looked at it, that watch was your birthright. He’d be ###### if any slopes were gonna put their greasy yellow hands on his boy’s birthright. So he hid it in the one place he knew he could hide something. His ###. Five long years, he wore this watch up his ###. Then he died of dysentery, he gave me the watch. I hid this uncomfortable hunk of metal up my ### two years. Then, after seven years, I was sent home to my family. And now, little man, I give the watch to you.

Is there a second bill in addition to your phone?

My iPad just worked as long as I paid the bill every month until I dropped it and started using my phone as a hotspot but it has to be in the same room as my phone. That’s where the range question came from

phone. $15/month I think. I got the WiFi only 6 and haven't missed it. You can go on a run and leave your phone behind, it'll play stored music/podcasts if you download them in advance. Tracking GPS doesn't require any connection to a phone.
Maybe 60' range from your phone with line of sight.

Apple (or Samsung or Garmin or Fitbit or any other electronic phone-connected watches) aren't watches, they're extensions of phones, and don't serve any purpose I require.

last night from 2-4am, I thought, "why don't I dig up the watch that I bought that is very nice and sporty and get it fixed".
I have this one, but the chronograph crapped out and the battery goes dead instantly. It needs some love as its about 20 years old.

Greenr has toyed with the idea of Garmin for running and

Apple watch for the rest. My wife has an Apple Watch and loves it. When we run, it is just as accurate as my Garmin, but I haven't done a detailed comparison on trails, etc. She does run with her phone in a belt so she can do the texting via watch and talking via watch, never pulls phone out unless it is necessary. I am jealous of those types of features. The health stuff may be cool, but things like VO2 Max are probably better/more accurate with a Garmin (although that accuracy is debatable).
Father G® hit the nail on the head above, if you use Apple and like Apple, it makes sense.

encouraging. It tells her stuff like "Good job, keep going, you are having a great day!" The Garmin will beep at me when I am running and tell me my performance condition is a negative 5 today or some crap like that. I blame that on running with her slow as>s though.
Apple might estimate steps a little easier if that is your thing, seems like Garmin is tough on that as well.

inversely related to cost. The less expensive stuff lasts forever, the nice and more expensive stuff ends in tragedy.
Desired health monitoring functions are the most features for me. Screen definition / visuals related to ease of reading and use would be my next most significant attribute. Basic reading of phone notifications, texts, email notifications, time and date at a glance in various light is important.

the fatal flaw of these watches
Mar 24, 2021, 8:58 AM
|
|
(I have a Samsung because Android phone)
is the battery life. They "claim" battery lasts 3 days. Yeah, if you never look at it or use any function on it, it might. I would wear mine every day, but if you use it more than a few times during the course of a workday, it's very likely to die on you before you get home. Hauling around the charger everywhere is not a serious option.
And part of its supposed function is to wear it at night to monitor sleep. Never got to test this as it has to charge SOMETIME. Not sure in what dreamworld this watch can be worn 24/7. Even 14-16 hours straight. I have an older model about 3-4 years old, there is a newer model out now, maybe it is better.
It's really really cool to get e-mails, see who's calling you while in a meeting by looking at watch, etc. Rotating bezel - fabulous. The golf and fitness apps - great. And the infinite array of watch dials. I LOVE that. I just struggle with the battery limiting a full day's work.

The Garmins do less and last longer, 4-5 days sometimes, but the Apple Watch needs charging almost daily I guess. The sleep monitoring would be great if it lasted long enough to do that.
I sleep in the Garmin and it tells me all about how much I toss and turn.
8 hours 9 minutes last night, 48 minutes of which was deep sleep, 2:21 of REM sleep and the rest is Light Sleep with some awake time mixed in. I took meds last night so that was a GOOD night of sleep.

I suppose the best solution right now would be to have two, wear one 7am-7pm for active part of day and the other 7pm-7am for sleep/downtime. If they could be synced or something, not sure.

I know exactly what it takes to make those watches and just how great the technology is....they keep raising prices, which is solely based on demand, not extra R&D costs.
I just want a simple running watch from Garmin and then an everyday watch.
I have found that V02 max is pretty accurate, however performance indicator has no idea about the environment that you are running in, so it really cannot accurately tell you your performance. You would have to have 15-20 workouts in the exact same conditions to get a good read, which hardly anyone does unless you live on a treadmill.
