That’s definitely the point that uga was driving when recruiting

Jul 25, 2022, 1:41 PM

bowers-Clemson won’t use you like we will. They don’t utilize the tight ends in the offense.

Jul 25, 2022, 3:39 PM

Well, you got to have a TE with talent as a pass catcher for him to be noticed by the fans. We haven't had one since Leggett. Davis was fine, but not quite as good. My hope is the Briningstool steps up this year. He seems have the talent to be a mismatch against backers/safeties. Who knows, maybe we'll have another Dwayne Allen or Bennie Cunningham someday.....

Being on the field and actually being used in the passing game are 2 different things

Jul 25, 2022, 1:45 PM

Its a legit concern... hoping that changes, we could really use the TEs in the passing game.

Fans think using TEs means throwing to them

Jul 25, 2022, 1:46 PM

Coach Richardson thinks using TEs means they are in the game. We certainly needed the extra blocker last year.

6th paragraph cleans up 4th and 5th paragraphs, which make no sense.

So Richardson says "being on the field" = TE usage. Alrighty then.

So if you're a receiving TE that's being recruited by P5 programs, that's what Jawja/Bama and others are going to be telling you.

I imagine UGA used the fact that the Tigers didn't toss any to the TEs during the game when the number one TE recruit visited the valley.

Air Raid - based passing OC

Jul 25, 2022, 6:18 PM

Being that our new "passing game coordinator" is based in the Air Raid - I expect multiple receivers including TE's to have opportunities to catch passes.

As much as you love to think of Air Raid as pass 100% of the time and "it can be like that no doubt"! Many of the passing concepts are near the line of scrimmage with the "mesh concept" producing crossing routes. As teams adjust to that; one of the counter-adjustments is to leak a TE out in front of the mesh or behind it depending on the depth of the safeties and LB's.

I think the TE's will be used a bunch! As well as the RB's.

The center was on the field 100% of the plays

Jul 25, 2022, 3:54 PM

but they weren’t catching too many passes either! The middle of the field was like the Sahara Desert last year, but I hope things change for the better this season.

Here's my issue with this take...

Jul 25, 2022, 6:36 PM

always having an offense that's a byproduct of what the defense gives us.

If the Offensive philosophy is to always take what the defense gives you, and you always do that for years on end, then isn't to the Defense's benefit eventually as they know how you're going to respond??

To me, it wasn't a surprise at all when we found success in the 2 back set late in the year. Why? B/c Defense coordinators hadn't seen that from us before. It was another thing to prepare for (which makes the opposing teams job much more difficult).

IMO: We could be more creative with our pass plays and sets. I've seen enough of what LSU did in 2018 in their 5 WR sets, what Lane Kiffin did (immediately, in his first year) with Ole Miss in both 5 WR sets and 21 personnel, and what Lincoln Riley did at Oklahoma.

Their ability to create plays that are new and different, then, even build out of those same sets with new looks to keep defenses guessing from week to week is just different.

We don't have to adopt an entire new offense. For example, look at the success we have in the past with Jet Sweeps, or our Stacked WR sets on both sides. Just those little wrinkles created a lot of confusion for Defenses and helped us tremendously. Sort of like when we switched to 21 man personal late last year with the 2 back set.

When people who know football have been able call plays before it's run, and that is a problem. There has been an other obvious examples of issues:

1) Commitment to stay with the same plays lately because it's safe.
2) Lack of creativity at times.
3) Wide open sections in the middle off the field (b/c we simply wouldn't throw a slant a a go pattern to the TE).
4) Real lack to utilize the TE in the pass game. We avg less than 3 passes per game to the TE. Where is the balance? Where is the threat?

Sadly, I think we've become predictable. Heck, I've seen David Hood tweet the play before it was called numerous times last year. I can't say I didn't call several myself.

Re: Here's my issue with this take...

Jul 25, 2022, 6:55 PM

TigerCC - I don't think you are wrong! But, consider these offensive ranks for the following seasons!

2021 - 100th - but, who was the backup QB that could have effectively replaced an ailing DJU? Plus, the WR depth chart was bare to the point a walk-on not named Renfrow started the bowl game(Swinney).

2020 - 43.5 ppg finished 4th.
2019 - 4th in Nation at 45.3 ppg.
2018 - 3rd in Nation at 44.3 ppg.

To me I think people feel like because the schedule is ACC Clemson should be averaging 77 ppg like Nebraska back in the day. Truth is nothing the offensive staff has done points to where they need to change a whole bunch!
Generational QB's one might say, right?
We have had a 5-Star at QB since 2018 though. If I'm an offensive coach and we are finishing in the top five in the entire college football world and people are questioning our production: "I'm probably throwing my hands up and going good grief"!
I think people see the Bama's, LSU's, and Ohio States throw a slant and their top-tier WR takes it to the house it's "if they can do that in the SEC why can't we in the ACC"?
By the numbers - last year was an anomaly! The offensive staff did a great job just to hold it together with all the changes and new players weekly.

We will use the middle of the field and the offense will look different under Coach Richardson! He isn't 5-wide with inside power spread with a H.U.N.H offense. He is Air Raid.

Our starting QB last season couldn't keep with with...

Jul 25, 2022, 7:55 PM [ in reply to Here's my issue with this take... ]

his primary receiver unless he looked at him throughout the play. He didn't know where his secondary was and may not have know which receiver was secondary. He was pretty good at hitting his checkdown man for a loss of two or three yards.

Re: Our starting QB last season couldn't keep with with...

Jul 25, 2022, 8:14 PM

I think he also

1. was playing (by season's end) with two different injuries he needed surgery on!

2. didn't have much rhythm with the wr corps; because there were always new people or freshmen.

3. knew there was virtually no good alternative behind him(was probably told that and played tentatively; though I think Hunter Helms could have done better because he could run).

4. because of his knee injury - a big part of the called runs were not called which hurt the offense because we can all remember some big QB runs over the past season.

5. never underestimate the fact his parents were going through a breakup; while he was across the country. Being from an incredibly tight family - that had to play on his mindset.

I was as frustrated as most Clemson fans. But, I can't see how you ignore all of the above! Not to mention the carousel at OL last season. The injuries alone to the rest of the team took their toll. I also think; he lost his confidence after the Georgia game. I think had Georgia been game two and we play an easier opponent and we win his confidence grows instead of wilts!
The different offense this season and hopefully a much healthier OL and WR corps! The Air Raid likes to get the ball out of the QB's hand rather quickly. I think DJU is going to be fine and love this passing game.

Re: Our starting QB last season couldn't keep with with...

It’s all that and more.

Richardson is gaslighting with his stats - pure chrrry picking. Why doesn’t he give the stats on how many times we threw to the TE per game? Answer: because it wouldn’t fit his narrative.

Sometimes, though, a TE has to wKe up a QB. I was once a TE many years ago. I remember my Tailback throwing pass after pass deep to our wingback, even in short yardage situations - of course after I had cleared out the OLB and corner. Finally on a 3rd and 3 I told the Tailback “Look, if you want me to keep blocking for your scrawny a$$, you’d better throw this one to me”. We didn’t have any problems after that. The TEs need to want the ball….. but they only deserve it if they can block and catch.

He also hit the defense a few times for pick sixes.

I've been outspoken somewhat re: this TE topic

Jul 25, 2022, 10:09 PM

I won't hold my breath, but I simply hope we incorporate them into less blocking, more catching roles. I am not naive enough to think it just flipping a switch. We need an offense to execute much more precisely... Especially on that line. Deer lowered.

We've recruited mid 4, high 3 stars at the position. I've missed our TE play for at least 5 years. I think Leggett had the last "large" impact.

Re: I've been outspoken somewhat re: this TE topic

Jul 26, 2022, 1:27 PM

The run game can be helped tremendously by TEs that can (and will) block. Our TEs are not great blockers. Every now and then I see an aggressive pounding by one of our TEs, but not nearly often enough.

Legget could not (or would not) block. He was really a WR playing a slot/flanker position who sometimes lined up as a 3-back/H-back/TE - but when the play called for him to pull into the hole as the lead/kick-out blocker, much of what he did was to mosey up to the defender and clog up the hole. I don't think I ever saw him put his head down and drive block anybody. He would sometimes get a good block on the outside, but mainly he was an exceptional WR that could run great slant and comeback routes.

The great TEs that I recall were Dwayne Allen and Bennie Cunningham. Those guys could (and would) block. Dwayne Allen was as good as anyone I've ever seen on the corner fade route.

Please no more coach speak.

Jul 25, 2022, 10:27 PM

Everyone knows what it means that Clemson hasn't used tight ends in capacity since Leggett. No tight end wants to be just a blocker or decoy. Mix it up. Get them the #### ball and let'm bulldoze for a few more yards. I have hope we will shed the post-it-note offense of the past 3 years. And the tight end has to be a big part of it downfield.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The Post-it note offense is now at UVA.

Re: TNET: Kyle Richardson says tight ends are a big part of the Clemson offense

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Davis Allen is the best tight end I've seen in a long time in college. I think if he were to be utilized more, he could be a real weapon. I think he is a superb pro prospect. He's got the size, can block, runs great routes and has soft hands.

Seems like TE usage will be an underrated key this season. Gives DJ some easy check down throws while opening up the running lanes.
