So car guize

Jun 19, 2020, 10:49 PM

There is the chance that I may putting my dad's old 2003 Yukon XL back in service. My ex was driving it for a couple years after he passed in 2015. She got a new CR-V mid 2017(?), so it has been sitting idle for a couple of years. Was getting cranked occasionally for a little while, but was not cranked in at least a year until tonight. I hooked up the jumper cables, and after a few minutes of charging it cranked right up.

So the question is, what do I need to do to make it roadworthy? Assume change all the fluids out? What else? Have a good mechanic just give it a good lookover? I really don't know, but the engine is so dammn good I didn't want it to sit any longer. It has 189,000 miles on it, and purrs like a kitten.

Honestly, drive it around and see what breaks lol. I’d def do all fluids as you said, checks tires, brakes, and put some fresh gas in the tank.

When I used to deploy, I’d have someone drive my car around. Cranking it helps the engine but exercising the tires and brakes helps. The first time I left, I didn’t do that and my tires developed flat spots that caused a lot of vibration.

Was it stored temp controlled or outside?

Latter, change all the fluids.

Former, change brake fluid, oil, and Coolant. If trans, diff, and transfer case fluid were fine before, they should be ok now.

Check tires fire for flat- spotting and dry rot/cracking.

I’d also drain the fuel tank, change the fuel filter, and start with fresh gas.

Think I will go the route of changing all fluids and having a mechanic give it a good once over, then drive it until #### breaks.

Probably a good bet, especially brake fluid. Also,

I was serious about the gas. It's highly unlikely someone filled it with ethanol-free the last time it was driven, so the odds are good that you have a tank full of bad gas.....it may be ok enough to start, but it could very likely be gumming up the fuel lines in the process.
