Was it me, or was the Hill more empty than it's been in

Sep 5, 2017, 1:33 PM

a long time? What gives? Haven't seen that much green on the Hill in forever - even in hot early season games against cupcakes in the past

No! Couldn't be!

They are all desperate for tickets. There's petitions and everything.

You're telling me they bailed at halftime to get drunk during a blowout?

No way man, no way.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think you're missing some of the point

Sep 5, 2017, 1:58 PM

I believe the main problem students have is that there is no system to ensure tickets are going to students that will actually attend. We used to camp out for our tickets and then there was no way you were going to bail after putting in the hours in line.

Now anyone can just go online, get their ticket, and then decide later whether they want to go with no repercussions I don't believe for not attending. Until there is some sort of merit system to reward the best fans, these problems will remain for all lower games.

If kids don't understand capitalism and selling tickets to other students (which they most certainly do), I'd be shocked.

Those tickets went to a person who attended. Take a look at the stands at kickoff.

It has zero to do with the initial attendance, and everything to do with the fact that they lost interest because we were smacking an inferior opponent.

The hill and the student section will be PACKED for Auburn. Write that down.

What got me was everytime they showed the youngsters

they were staring at their phones and not the game.

It was fine in the first half and as usual many fans didn't

Sep 5, 2017, 1:45 PM

come back after the half for an inferior opponent. Lots of empty seats after the half. Looked really bad on TV. Glad the team doesn't quit at the half. I don't get it. Spend all that money for tickets and leave.

Re: It was fine in the first half and as usual many fans didn't

Sep 5, 2017, 1:53 PM

I can see that with Kent St not even attempting a forward pass in the entire first half. Students want to get the party started and not everyone is there to see the young guys in their opportunities.

the hill. Security always leaves room for the team to assemble at Howard's rock before the cannon fires and they run down the Hill. That mass of people grows larger as kickoff time nears, just as it did Saturday. I was watching from my seat in North Upper Section O. Normally after the team runs down the Hill, that mass of humanity fills in the empty (if any) parts of the Hill. Well, that didn't happen this past week. There were 4 portable gate sections at the top of the Hill. It seems to me that game operations staff were checking tickets and letting people through the "gate" one at a time. The Hill did not fill in until well into the 1st quarter.

If this is not what happened, would someone who was in the middle of the situation please reply?

Re: Was it me, or was the Hill more empty than it's been in

Sep 5, 2017, 1:56 PM

Yeah, it's kind of funny all the bitching they did to not show up. The student section needs to be full every game and not just the big ones.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know when I was a student 2010-2014,

Sep 5, 2017, 2:08 PM

they severely cut down on the number of Hill tickets they'd give out. Not sure if it was a safety thing, and the Fire Marshall said so or what. But there was a serious drop in Hill tickets given out period season to season from my Freshman year to my Senior year. That's not to say there aren't other issues also contributing to it looking less full, but I do know that is one contributor.

On the other side of the coin, the north upper deck was full

Sep 5, 2017, 2:11 PM

... for a cup cake visiting team.

That almost never happens. Even for most ACC visitors.

I thought the crowd and the stadium looked great!!

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

North Upper has been full most every game for several

Sep 5, 2017, 2:32 PM

years now. One reason the South Upper corners are empty is because students working the gate for the Hill let students with upper deck seats into the Hill area. That is why it is so packed out for the big games. Plus there's the pass-out, rub-the-ink stamp-on-the-wrist thingy that gets more students in the lower bowl.

Re: North Upper has been full most every game for several

Hate to have to disagree, but we must be looking at different games.

On TV, I have seen a significant number of empty seats (several hundred at least) in the upper corner of the North upper deck for most ACC games.

Those seats are generally sold to visiting schools who then fail to put people in them at game time.

Can't speak to the South upper deck, because it rarely appears on TV.

I feel sure the place will be packed for Auburn and if we continue to win, the empty seats will not be a problem.

pic of the moment The Hill run began

Sep 6, 2017, 7:36 PM

this was 3:11 before kickoff, according to the scoreboard clock. Notice the cannon smoke. Empty student seating everywhere. That many folks missed the entire National Championship ceremony, can you believe that? If that's not a lure to be there on time, what is?

Hill and Upper Deck crowd did get larger, but never filled up.

I agree with making it tougher to get a ticket, camping out, waiting in line, something other than pushing a couple buttons on a cellphone to get in a "virtual" line. Or do like Auburn does and make students first come, first serve. They are packed in their seats 2 hours before the game. I was very impressed last year at the game in Auburn. Maybe that is unfair, but you can be sure that the students that REALLY WANT to be there are certainly there.

Re: pic of the moment The Hill run began

Sep 6, 2017, 9:25 PM

Wow ... that angle never shows on TV ... that's pretty bad. I never missed a game (or showed up late) when I was a student, and we were not a good program at all back then. We had a lot fewer students then and of course we had a lot fewer seats as well. Students were into the games even though we lost more than we won.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I saw that too.

Sep 5, 2017, 2:20 PM

Made me think about all the bitching I saw all last week about student tickets.

Re: Was it me, or was the Hill more empty than it's been in

I noticed this too and it's very disappointing, but I am a student here and I know several people that didn't get into to this game due to the ticketing system. I was surprised to see the hill so empty when some of my friends were unable to get tickets although they are iptay members and would have been in the stadium before 11:30.

If there were no more student tix to sell, why was there space on the hill? I need answers!!!
