Walt Deptula talks a lot

about how in this era of college football that its offense that matters most and that old school beliefs ie "defense wins championships" is outdated. Whats the opinion here? Seems to me under Brent Venables the defense is back to making things happen and if the offense bogs down a little now the defense goes back out and makes a stop. Maybe it wasn't that way under Vic Koenning and Kevin Steele but its that way now. It makes you wonder if all the talk about how a team's use of the spread offense kept the defense on the field too long was just not recognizing bad defense.

First two games are a crapshoot. Need to see us play NC State and FSU. We'll know where we stand after that.

to a degree, I think all defenses at ALL levels are in transcisition. (sp)
Back in the day, teams huddled...they took long times getting plays in,and the game seemed a lot slower. Now, teams seem to be moving a lot faster. Offenses are realizing the more plays they run, the more chances there might be for success. It does make it a lot harder on defenses. IMO... from a defense standpoint, you would like to to the point where you are trying to make offenses beat themselves. Can't give up the BIG PLAYS...bend but don't break. If U do that, I think you give yourself a chance for success.
Hope that helps. #21

Carry a weak defense or offense. On great teams, both sides may not be great all the time but can be relied upon to back up the other when needed. Takes a lot of pressure off the offense if they know the D can make some stops. Same for the D if the offense can go back out and score again. Big difference for us against GA was the d forcing 3 and outs while the O struggled. My rather rambling point is you need a team, not an offence, defense or special teams to reach the highest levels.

points - that's the bottom line.
Defense still matters, and it matters a lot, but the definition of a good defense has changed from say, 20 or 30 years ago. Rarely will a good or even great defense today hold good opponents to 2 TDs or less. Now a good defense simply means making your opponent's offense earn what they get, and getting a few crucial stops per game. It's gone from shut-down to contain and manage.

Forget for a moment the jest of your topic about offense vs defense. That is neither the issue,or the problem with your topic. The thing about your topic is that Walt talks too much period. He knows everything, his opinion is the only one that matters,he is never wrong, and when he is he will never admit it,or he will spin it somehow to make you think you were wrong As far as your question about offense vs defense,I think both go hand in hand.Good teams have both, good teams also have good special teams play. But even average teams can sometimes beat better teams if they have a coaching staff that can outcoach yours. Don't believe me.Just look at the job Spurrier has done at Carolina.

I guess Alabama didn't get the memo about defense winning championships while they won 3 out of the last 4.
He also thinks Lebron James sucks at shooting and is a loser. Man, those two titles in a row and the same jump shooting % as Kevin Durant sure support that argument.
