Walking Across Campus One Night in 1981...

It's about 10:00 pm and I'm walking towards the library from Johnstone D-4 when I hear a strange noise behind me. I can't really make it out (it's faint), but it keeps getting louder. Woosh, woosh, woosh... I'm in a hurry now, but the noise keeps getting louder. Then I start to hear footsteps keeping in time with the woosh, woosh, woosh. It sounds like the noise is right on top of me... Finally I can't stand it any longer. I look around and it's William Perry (that's right, The Fridge) gaining on me with every step. He is wearing one of those old stiff nylon warmups, and every time he took a step his massive thighs would rub together. I said hi, he said hi, and I told him I saw him play basketball a few times while he was at Aiken High School and I was at Airport High and how my roommate had taken a charge from him. He talked a little about that, and then we went our separate ways. I think back on my days at Clemson and cherish the little things that happened along the way. My son is going to Clemson now. We already exchange experiences about our college life (and he is only a freshman). It will always be something we have in common.

I remember passing him in the student post office. He was wearing flip flops and shorts and had the biggest calves I've ever seen. I prayed that he would not accidently step on my foot...never felt that about another human before or since!

That’s a great memory. I saw him playing BB in The old Fike. He made lots of noise but was amazing smooth as he moved. And then we saw him dunk, and everyone in the gym paused in amazement and then the place erupted in wild cheers. Those were great times.

watching him play in Fike was when our hall decided to form an intramural softball team instead of a basketball team.

Wait a minute.
I know you.
When did you ever go to the library at 10:00 PM?

I remember in high school taking him to games with the family. He ate all our chicken. We played at aiken together. Btw Michael Dean is returning to Aiken soon. He’s a good guy too.

I think it was a Winn Dixie, not sure, but I like the irony of it. Bumped into the Fridge at the meat section. He was pushing one cart and his wife/girlfriend was pushing another. His cart was filled with varieties of meat, and she was getting the rest of the fixins. They were both smiling and that made me feel good. My food for the week barely covered the bottom of the cart. I got out of there under $20. I'm sure theirs cost a lot more. She must have had a good job.

The class met in one of the old auditorium style classrooms and he was so big, he couldn't fit in the desks which was fine because he rarely attended anyway.

His national championship ring. She could put it over 2 of her fingers with room to spare.

I was there in 1981. Delivered pizza for Pizza Hut. He would order a medium super supreme. Total was $9.95. He would open the door to the marriage housing he stayed in with wife. Big piano in the living room. Almost bigger than the living room. He would had me a $10 and stand there till I gave him his nickel. Never gave me a tip.

That’s awesome! I raised my son on Clemson

since the day he was born. Clemson Christmas tree, Tigers in bedroom/bathroom, 100s of Clemson games in many sports - with some fun road trips sprinkled in.
So of course when it came to choosing a university - he choose NCState so he could get drunk with his high school buddies every night.
Good times. Good times.
I’m not bitter or anything though...

I walked by Trevor Pryce once in front of Schilletter. I'm convinced he is the largest human being I've ever seen in person. It was like walking past a mountain.

Coming back from TTT One Night in 1981...

We were walking behind some police officers when I said a little too loudly “Did you know they call them PIGs because it stands for Patience, Integity, and Guts?”
They turned around and yelled at us “get over here!” and then the older one said “well we can really be mad about that now can we?”
Had a class with WP - he was a great guy. Lots of fun and kept the class discussions going.
The year and your handle reminded me of good times.

Was at the bar in TTT - turned around with a pitcher and bumped into a LARGE man. Looked up and it was Fridge. I apologized for bumping into him. He smiled with that gap toothed grin, patted me on the head, and said "that's ok little man". Gentle giant, for sure.
