Wait, I thought this was about getting sexually explicit

Materials away from little kids?

Why don't y'all just go ahead and admit that it was never about that.

I am just glad the bible made it past the State board of educators, it would be a shame if it had inappropriate references to homosexuality, or had Woke passages about slavery.

A better solution would have one person complain

Why would banning a poem from a poet laureate

1

May 24, 2023, 3:13 PM

Benefit students and improve their subject areas, specifically English?

Should we ban Maya Angelou from schools next?

EDIT: And I'm sorry, you're very primary argument, along with others on this board, was that it was to keep sexually explicit material away from kids. Y'all repeatedly cited "Gender Queer".

Clearly that's not the ultimate purpose. Y'all have shifted the goalposts very hard.

Here's what it's really about: Forcing only what is considered conservative or right wing information and shutting out anything that could be perceived to the contrary. There's my claim. I'm open to challenges to that claim.

Nothing in her poem divides. Florida has opened the door for parents to simply have material removed because they personally don't like it; instead of policing what their kid reads, they want to police it for everyone. Do the parents who want this taught in schools get a voice?

Wouldn't this serve as a positive role model for young people, especially girls, to see this young woman's early success?

And CRT isn't taught in K-12 public education.

Re: Why would banning a poem from a poet laureate

I said I wasn’t going to debate the technicalities of CRT with you. You know what I’m referring to. A teacher here got busted asking students to write about systemic racism in HS English. It is happening. There are in fact lib teachers who can’t keep their politics out of the classroom.

That proves my point. CRT isn't part of any curriculum in K-12, and those teachers who go outside the curriculum face consequences.

Also, those parents do have a voice. I believe almost every school district has some sort of review policy in place with review committee members from faculty, library media, parents, etc. Their input is considered as well as the complaint. Also, many times when books are removed, lawsuits are filed. So there is plenty of voice. This is democracy in action.

Doesn't seem to be what happened here. One parent complained. One. That's not democracy in action.

Finally I don’t consider people who achieve fame or recognition by whining to be role models. There are plenty of minority role models though who are not in fact whining.

Do you feel this girl got her recognition by "whining"? If so, how?

I think it’s always been about keeping things out of the schools that aren’t necessarily educational, really don’t add any value, and in many cases can cause problems or division unnecessarily.

You just mean "to conservative straight white christian snowflakes," right?

You don't want literature taught if it might hurt your feelings? You guys want our schools to raise goose-stepping idiots incapable of critical thinking.

Not true. The poem is divisive. You would not get it because you only see one side.

With that said, the poem is not divisive in the minds of elementary school kids. You have to be an adult to read between the lines. But, you guys invented cancel culture, so deal with it.

With that said, the poem should be banned on its ridiculous premise that the nation 'will rise' blah blah blah. The nation will never rise above racism because you lefties cannot exist without it. Racism will NEVER end in the USA - it is more important to the left than all gubment social programs. Racism will be reinvented and redefined by the left whenever its required, and the sheep will merrily go along.

Awareness of the proliferation of non-curricular materials in public schools was brought to light because of the proliferation of ‘grooming’ type literature in the public school libraries.

I distinctly recall a string of back-&-forth posts on this very subject in which you said that you would ‘make your stand on this hill’ with respect to allowing public schools to have total autonomy for the decisions on what non-curricular materials should be made available to students in public schools. You had the sexual / grooming subjects in YOUR mind when you made that ‘let the FL schools make this decision, instead of DeSantis.’

(*). When I countered that you must also be OK for FL public schools to have non-curricular materials such as pro-KKK literature, your head flew off.

Cat’s solemn stance on that ‘let the schools have entire freedom to decide what goes in the library’ hill? Poof! Gone!

If you had been gov of FL and got a law passed that would have left the public schools to continue to have complete autonomy as far as choices of what non-curricular materials could be provided in those schools, then State of FL would have had no legal means of policing the presence of either pro-KKK books or pro-tranny books.

Xxxxxxx

The State of FL has taken the appropriate means to insert a checks-&- balances component into materials to be made available to kids.

Just because it was pro-tranny / pro-groomer materials that brought this matter to State of FL’s attention never implied that State of FL’s law would not encompass other non-curricular subjects.

Because similar to a public library, a public school is supposed to be an open service to the public and provide education the kids can't get elsewhere for whatever reason so long as it fits with curriculum.

Can anyone tell me exactly why a 5th grader can't read this poem?

Parents or guardians are responsible for the kids’ choices and sometimes those can’t be controlled within a school environment.

Right... so if valid complaints against inappropriate items that go against the curriculum need to be addressed, by all means. But that's not what happened here; Florida has (intentionally) opened up a method to suppress material that one side of the political aisle objects to. This poem isn't inappropriate.

Arguing that anything is "divisive" is a ludicrous catch phrase; I can argue that over any piece of famous literature. What the person means is that it introduces ideas they don't like. Is To Kill a Mockingbird "divisive"? Of Mice and Men? Mending Wall by Frost, which literally discusses divisiveness?

Where do we stop?

Is it really news that a school moved a poem from one section of the library to another?

In a statement to CNN Tuesday evening, Miami-Dade County Public Schools spokesperson Elmo Lugo said, “No literature (books or poem) has been banned or removed.”

“It was determined at the school that ‘The Hill We Climb’ is better suited for middle school students and, it was shelved in the middle school section of the media center. The book remains available in the media center,” he said.

How can you post something like this and then also chastise others for posting about stupid stuff from Target?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here's why

1

May 24, 2023, 3:29 PM

It was moved because a parent complained. One. Parent. Complained. And thus, using the new law, got the entire material--which is NOT inappropriate for children--moved out of the curriculum.

We're making changes like this because one intolerant parent demands it?

That's not comparable to someone pitching a hissy fit because Target sells some #### he doesn't like. In fact, he's more on par with that parent.

Re: Wait, I thought this was about getting sexually explicit

1

May 24, 2023, 3:52 PM

I don't have a problem with parents having a say about what is in their kids schools libraries but this isn't anywhere near as bad as what many of these same kids are watching on their phones. These parents need to reign in phone usage among kids, before all else, if they are concerned about what they are being exposed to.

And understand how stupid attacks on library books are when these herp derping parents let their kids have unfettered access to social media and the Internet on their phones.

How about a new rule: Any parent who ####### about a book in schools and wants it removed has to submit a detailed log of their kid's cell phone activity and browser history.
