I wonder how their gun violence as a whole compares to ours? I think the USA has some of the least gun violence in the western world. Canada sounds nuts.

Yeah. After living in Illinois for 27 years and in the Chicago area for many of those, Illinois is a tough state for law abiding citizens to get a weapon of any kind. First you have to get your FOID Card (Firearm Owners ID) from the state police to legally own or buy a gun or to buy ammo. Then of course there's all the waiting after purchase and the process for a concealed carry permit is brutal. However, the bad guys shooting up Chicago have no problems getting guns and ammo though.
