Any Way

Dec 2, 2016, 5:26 PM

We don't make it into playoffs if we win? Just listened to a guy on SI say he would take Washington over Clemson because they have more top 25 wins..

No.***

Yes...

In 2014 TCU was ranked #3 in the penultimate rankings, played a game and won big, and then dropped to #6 in the final rankings. People that are saying there is no chance haven't been paying attention the last 3 years of CFP existence.

Not saying that I expect it to happen, but Washington, Wisconsin, Penn State, and Colorado are all playing teams ranked significantly higher than VA Tech. Their perceived resumes will improve much better than ours with a win.

It doesn't matter how many times you say the same thing...

Dec 2, 2016, 5:50 PM

It doesn't make it a fact. It's just your opinion. Based on nothing but blather. I gave you a precedence in 2014 for what COULD happen. [Not that I expect that to happen, but it is a possibility.]

TCU didn't drop from #3 to #6 in the final 2014 rankings after winning 55-3?

lose we're out. You gave me a lesson on something that happened once before. I'm saying you're wrong to think we win and get left out. Not going to happen. Zero chance.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There is a very real difference here

Dec 2, 2016, 6:00 PM [ in reply to I'm wrong? ]

TCU did not have a conference championship, which the CFP has stated time and again will be strongly weighted.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, not strongly weighted

Dec 2, 2016, 6:05 PM

The conference championships are only used as a tie breaker when the committee doesn't feel there is clear better team. That's been said over and over again by Kirby Hocutt during interviews after the rankings are released.

Once again, I did not say that I expected it to happen. I'm just saying it's a possibility.

In addition, Washington/Colorado and Penn State/Wisconsin will have a conference championship after Saturday.

if you paid attention in 2014 you would remember the

Dec 2, 2016, 6:19 PM

Committee Chair commented that the conference championship game, and in the case of TCU, the lack thereof, DID matter to THAT committee.

The only Conference Champion that might be in jeopardy this year, is Washington. That is only because of the "current Chairman" stating the difference between Washington at #4 and Michigan at #5 is very small. Largely due to Washington's low strength of schedule. Our strength of schedule is much higher than Washington and our danger has not been mentioned, period.

Re: if you paid attention in 2014 you would remember the

Dec 2, 2016, 6:28 PM

I've been listening and noticed exactly what you did (#4 vs. #5 comparison), but these comments were before Washington played Colorado. We really don't have any idea how much a win against the #8 team will improve Washington's strength of schedule in the eyes of the committee (vs. a win against #23).

Once again, I'm not EXPECTING this to happen. I just think it's a possibility (albeit small).

One thing there is no danger... Michigan won't jump ahead of us!!

OP said anyway we don't make it in. You seem to be saying

Dec 2, 2016, 6:30 PM

Washington could jump us but Michigan won't. So who would jump is to leave us out?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: OP said anyway we don't make it in. You seem to be saying

Dec 2, 2016, 6:38 PM

This is a possibility (small, and not that I think it will happen, just saying there's a chance).

Washington
Penn State #7 vs. Wisconsin #6 winner

The committee clearly feels that the Big 10 is the best conference (current #2, #5, #6, #7 teams). There's an outside shot that they put a 2-loss Big 10 champion into the playoffs. This is a long shot, but I think it's non-zero.

Review the Selection Criteria

Dec 2, 2016, 6:10 PM [ in reply to There is a very real difference here ]

When circumstances at the margins indicate that teams are comparable, then the following criteria must be considered:

Championships won
Strength of schedule
Head-to-head competition (if it occurred)
Comparative outcomes of common opponents (without incenting margin of victory)

Re: Yes...

Dec 2, 2016, 6:34 PM [ in reply to Yes... ]

Not the same circumstances. TCU was not playing for a conference championship in a championship game. It was game 12 for them. That's why they were penalized and dropped by the committee.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.

Washington wouldn't have more top 25 wins?

Dec 2, 2016, 6:03 PM

in current rankings they beat Stanford, Utah, and then a win over Colorado in PAC12 title game, if we go by the teams rankings when they played they would have 4 with Washington State (who dropped out of the latest rankings)

We will have 4 top 25 wins, Auburn, Louisville, Florida State, and VT in the current rankings and all teams would most likely stay ranked, besides maybe VT who could drop after the loss but I would assume they would still be in the top 25

EDIT: took out Pitt because I mentally blocked out that game my bad

Plus, if we in and UW wins pretty sure we are both in anyway

Dec 2, 2016, 6:16 PM

I don't think a 2 loss Big10 champ gets in over either of us

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't believe so. By the metrics they look at

Dec 2, 2016, 7:11 PM

We are #2 in Game Control, #3 in Strength of Record and our SoS is higher than everyone we're competing with except Wisconsin (who I think would have a hard time getting in over Michigan).
