DE position group in '23

Jan 25, 2022, 10:00 AM

The Tnet article on DEs got me thinking, assuming Myles Murphy goes pro, our DEs are going to take a noticeable dive in 23.

We recruited:

1 DE in '20 - Myles Murphy (stud 5*)
2 DE in '21 - Zaire Patterson (4*) and Cade Denhoff (4*)
0 DE in '22 - (So far)

As it stands now, in '23 our starting DEs would be between Patterson, Denhoff, and Swint (converted 3 star LB).

Right now recruiting-wise we are looking at some fall-back candidates just to get bodies in there. The rest of the DEs we have are:

Armon Mason - fr
Andrew Roberts - jr
Evan McMcutch - fr
Greg Williams - so

Does anyone have any info on these players?

So it seems like we have bodies in the room and have at least 2 more than likely quality starters but we absolutely can not afford any injuries.

Could this be a portal situation?

I agree … most on here are short sighted and cant see

I know and this is what I can't stand sometimes. Try to have an objective look at a situation and if it's not glowing then here come the same lazy responses from the same few posters.

Hopefully this time we can get some adult-like, honest discussion. Fingers crossed.

Relying on true frosh to play DL … they better be studs

Jan 25, 2022, 10:12 AM

No projects

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Very true.

Jan 25, 2022, 10:15 AM

But how did it get so bad? One minute we were on top of the hill with DE recruiting and before you know it we can't even sign one quality DL in a huge position of need.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Like Wilkins, Lawrence, Breese, Murphy, Davis?

Jan 25, 2022, 10:24 AM [ in reply to Relying on true frosh to play DL … they better be studs ]

we have a pretty good track record at landing that type player. Also have a track record of developing guys from depth. Guys on the roster like Patterson, Williams, Denhoff and Swint who we have no idea how good they may be due to our current depth

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When we've needed studs on the DL at DT or DE

Jan 25, 2022, 10:05 AM

we've landed studs. Our track record of putting guys in the NFL, after this year Breese, Davis, Murphy, XT and maybe Henry, makes us a destination spot for DL. I don't see that changing, and expect impact recruits in 2023

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We can definitely sell playing time.

Jan 25, 2022, 10:12 AM

If we bring in some freshman studs then my bet is that they are on the field!

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We really have no idea how good Patterson, Williams, Swint

Jan 25, 2022, 10:17 AM

or Denhoff are, and likely won't even after this season with Murphy, XT, Henry and Mascoll all ahead of them on the 2 deep. We likely sign Lawson, who needs to add a lot of weight, but has some talent.

We've recruited at an elite level on the DL for years, just don't see that changing

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Still

Jan 25, 2022, 10:22 AM

Greg William is another project player (converted lb) and so is the kid we are recruiting this year who is like 215 lbs.

Not saying some of these guys won't be absolute studs but do you really want to load your whole roster full of them then hope to land some freshman studs who can play immediately?

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What makes you think we won't land the studs this year

Jan 25, 2022, 10:25 AM

with our track record of doing so?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Striper fan, I am on your side here.

Jan 25, 2022, 10:29 AM

I hope to GOD we land some studs this year and next.

I was just pointing out the situation to see if maybe this would be a serious portal consideration.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Portal could come in to play

Jan 25, 2022, 10:32 AM

I know we've had an elite DL for closing in on a decade, and I really don't see that changing. We recruit it at an elite level and develop it at an elite level. Eason is only going to enhance both of those areas

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Probably a good thing we have Eason with some immediate

Jan 25, 2022, 11:09 AM

positions open to recruit for us well. We definitely needed some new energy there. See you back on the board when we sign that awesome DE!!

Re: When we've needed studs on the DL at DT or DE

Jan 25, 2022, 10:15 AM [ in reply to When we've needed studs on the DL at DT or DE ]

Except it has changed this year. Who honestly projected both XT and KJ Henry to come back? Our depth could have really been tested this coming year had either of them left. If we land studs in 23 we are still relying on true freshman with little to no experienced depth behind them. I’m not saying it’s doom and gloom but to act like it’s not a concern is complete ignorance at this point.

2024 orange level membermilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We've started elite freshmen at DT and DE many times

Jan 25, 2022, 10:20 AM

the depth is unproven because of the elite talent still ahead of them. We've developed extremely well on the DL. I'll see if it's a concern for me after I see who we sign in 2023

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great recruiting pitch...For the first time in many years

Jan 25, 2022, 10:33 AM

Elite DE's have a chance to come in and play a lot/possibly start as freshman.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Williams isn’t just a “body”

Jan 25, 2022, 10:57 AM

And we are looking to sign a couple STUDS in 2023.

Plus although many see Caden Story as a DT, I think he’s a better fit as a DE. He plays with good bend and leverage and has an 80” wingspan. He would be an absolute nightmare to block outside.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Williams is an unknown

Jan 25, 2022, 11:02 AM

any way you look at it. Will he ever provide meaningful depth? Who knows.

Interesting comment about Story though, we might need to shift some people over for sure.

Re: Williams is an unknown

Jan 25, 2022, 11:29 AM

Actually was hoping that breaking news was Story. He's a game changer. Not that I'm dissapointed it's nylon kylon no pylon.

To your original post Pacific, not sure why we haven't inked a DE this cycle yet. It would be a good use of the portal this year to get a DE with a few years eligibility left.

Jan 25, 2022, 11:15 AM [ in reply to Williams isn’t just a “body” ]

He's got those skills now but is expected to fill out a good bit. Will be interesting. Comparable to Bresee in that could play inside or out.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mascoll can play in 2023, he has another year. He will

Jan 25, 2022, 11:24 AM

likely either stay and be a starter/split time starter or if he leaves it will mean that he has been beat out by a stud TR FR or transfer on the 2 deep. We will likely have 5 vets for 2023: Mascoll, Denhoff, Patterson, Swint, Williams and a guy coming off RS in Lawson for a total of 6. We will sign 2 or 3 4 or 5 star players in the 2023 class.

not concerned at all

Re: DE position group in '23

Jan 25, 2022, 12:05 PM

The only way to avoid a big letdown is to bring in some studs in the 2023 class. Quality D linemen are hard to find in the portal.

Re: DE position group in '23

Jan 25, 2022, 12:20 PM

Current roster on Tigernet shows 14 DEs and 10 DL/DTs. May need to be more concerned with the interior than the edges.

Re: DE position group in '23

How many of those DEs will be here in '23?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: DE position group in '23

Jan 25, 2022, 1:50 PM

8 if Murphy and Mascoll both leave. Looks like same number on DTs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: DE position group in '23

Jan 25, 2022, 2:44 PM

If both Murphy and Mascoll leave. This is most likely what we're looking at in "23. DT has an edge in numbers, experience and recruited talent.

DE

Greg Williams
Kevin Swint
Cade Denhoff
Zaire Patterson
Jahiem Lawson

DT

Ruke Orhorhoro
Etinosa Reuben
Demonte Capehart
Tre Williams
Payton Page
Caden Story

Jan 25, 2022, 3:33 PM

DE class in 2023 is pretty good. Definitely need to land immediate difference makers. We missed the Alabama DE and Campbell from IMG. We really did need to bring in at least 1 DE in this class.

Also Justin Mascoll may very well come back for a COVID 6th year.
