certain brand of gas? Back in the day, all the stations were owned/franchised by the gas companies - you wanted Shell (which my dad did) you went to a Shell station, same for Esso, BP, etc.
These days you might notice the brand at the pump, but do you buy only ______ gas?

because he is the only one one this side of town that accepts Harris Teeter reward points. Last time I filled up was $.60/gallon off.
That really has nothing to do with the brand of gas/diesel though.

I had a Texaco card
Jun 24, 2022, 11:12 AM

I think that was my very first credit card. I remember at Clemson we got inundated with credit card offers in the mail. Plus the banks had the tents set up to give you free t-shirt, jackets, etc if you went with their ATM card. I opted for that one because a buddy of mine's dad ran a Texaco station. And I got a BP one also. I pretty much stopped after that, had too many friends get deep in CreditHell, which wised me up to the scam. Belk, Sears, gas, some folks had dozens of "charge cards". Ad no way to pay the minimums every months. Shame gullible students got sucked into that.
I quit using gas credit cards long long ago. I have one credit card and one debit card now, that's it.
But for gas brands back in the day, I remember people used to BOYCOTT brands more than be devoted to a any certain ones. Exxon seemed to top the boycott list most often, and I remember a Phillips 66 and a Gulf boycott. Mostly tanker spills or refinery catastrophes.

They made a coffee blonde, can't just call it coffee blonde, so I said Blonde Valdez. Only customers of a certain age understood, but the beer was good and sold well.

Kroger is just ok anymore. When they first opened here they were giving double and triple points on prescriptions and stuff. I use my Executive Costco card because 5% cash back. BUT, they don't honor Kroger or Shell. I like the Love's and a couple other big truck stop places when going across country like I'm fixin' to do in a few weeks. I'm figuring upwards of 3Kish for gas where last year it was about 1.2K. 5% cash back be $150ish. Sucks but it has to be done. So many fish, so little time. Be back before the snows get deep in the Rockies.

I'll never forget my dad. Child of the 50's. When he was about my age, as I kid, I remember he had a credit card for every single oil company. Exxon, Shell, Texaco, Amoco, BP, whatever. And he would only use those gas stations. He also had probably 5-10 other credit cards. They were a status symbol back then. He had a Diner's Club card, Players Club card, A Visa Card, a Mastercard, American Express, then the department store credit cards, you name it. He would pay a 5-inch high stack of bills every month. It was an all-day thing to "pay the bills".
I also recall a time in the 80's when my parents got in an argument because they were $42,000 in credit card debt.

It's convenient to the rental return, they take AMEX and it's no more expensive than any of the other places near it.
At home I go to either the Kroger or the Racetrack because they're generally close to the house.
When I'm on the highway I look for whatever gas station isn't going to make my wife cringe when she goes to the bathroom while I fill the tank.

Very dumb financial advice:
Jun 24, 2022, 12:26 PM
|

My parents always had BP (Amoco) and Exxon (Mobil) gas cards. So I thought that was the best way to approach it. I looped my wife into this when we got married. Turns out, I should just buy all of gas on a rewards credit card. On the other hand, having more lines of credit available for a significant period of time has helped.
BP just sold their credit wing to First National Bank of Omaha. Not only did they raise my credit limit to a dumb high amount, they also transitioned the credit card from a BP only card to a rewards card with some decent perks that can be used anywhere and everywhere.
So to answer your question: I am committed to BP and Exxon.
