DBs next season?

Sheridan Jones and Malcolm Greene at one corner spot (Jones might transfer if passed by Greene in the spring, my speculation)
Fred Davis and Nate Wiggins at the other corner spot. Could be a talented rotation.
NB has a ton of talent with Simpson, Greene, and Carter with depth provided by Venables.
SS will be Mukuba, can’t wait to see him next season
FS Mickens/Phillips/Zanders???
Not sure how Lukus, Pride, Covil will contribute. I would imagine Woodaz would be a developmental guy that is mainly special teams the first couple of seasons.
Any chance that Barrett Carter gets moved back to FS with Mukuba?

I think carter should stay at linebacker. He’s been burnt a few times in coverage this year. I know he was just a freshman, but still. Mickens has played solid this year. He just has to learn the fs position

Carter was impressive in space at times. But Mickens also looked good.
Having Simpson, Carter, Mukuba, and Greene on the field at the same time would be one of the most explosive and athletic secondaries in the country. Paired with the returning DL, whew... could be trouble for opposing Os

Good take! I’d love to see Simpson, Carter, and Trotter at LB… but I like Mickens at FS. I wonder if the youngsters Pride and Covil will make an impact. Both seem very fast and talented. We need to have a fast defense that can cover side to side yet can stuff the run as well.

Simpson, Carter, and Trotter at LB would be nasty. Especially with good depth with McGuire and Bentley.
Venables left some dudes...

That guy can hit. Seems to be a bit of a liability in coverage. But you’re probably right. I could see him transferring if he isn’t the starter. I just don’t know how quickly Trotter will mature. But Trotter probably has a higher ceiling.

You’re right man. That would be nasty. Would that be the first time all 3 starting LB’s were 5 stars? Or was Trotter a 5 star? Thought he was at least on some platforms.

What about Vonta Bentley in the LB scenario you proposed?

Re: DBs next season? Worried about depth at Safety

Safety (depth) currently looks like a problem for 2022.
Considering that safety's are very much needed for special teams play, we need more than 4 safeties.
Jaylen Phillips / A.Mukuba / R.J.Mickens (am I missing anyone) are our healthy & experienced S's.
L.Zanders ... will he be recovered from his busted-up shoulder? If he can play early in 2022, then will his shoulder hold up?
S.Covill will be a true FR. Not many A.Mukuba types can come in with both the physical attributes and field awareness to make a big contribution like A.Mukuba. We can only hope (but not expect) S.Covill to be another A.Mukuba type contributor at Safety in 2022. Almost surely Covill will play special teams.
Lukas and Woodaz are almost sure bets to play special teams ... simply because of the depth problems for us at Safety.
Maybe we can pull a rabbit (or safety) out of the hat in this last part of the recruiting season, or maybe we can get a good portal player.
B.Carter will almost surely be T.Simpson's back up at SLB (or at NB in non-passing situations).

Safety is definitely thin. That’s the driver around my curiosity of how flexible Carter could be to fill that role. Hopefully, Zanders heals fully and is ready to roll. Seems like he has struggled to stay healthy his whole career so far.

Is Tyler Venables returning or is he going to Oklahoma to play for his dad? Seems like I read after Brent left that both Jake and Tyler would be staying at Clemson, with Jake going into a GA role as he pursued a graduate degree and Tyler finishing his undergraduate degree while continuing to play here. If he returns that’s another player who saw significant time this year at safety which helps with depth.

I have not heard, but it is a tough decision for him now that he has really bonded with many on this team. Plus you are in line to be a starter or big contributor next year. This is I think he may stay.
You know Brent is has told him it is his decision and is not pushing him to OU.

If his dad weren’t Brent we probably would appreciate him a little more. He’s not that bad of a player. Not great but a solid back up at least.

Yeah true. I think in a year Lukas and Wiggins will both be starting opposite sides from one another.

My take on the defense…
DL: TD (If he comes back), Bresee DE: KJ Henry (if he comes back), Murphy LB: Simpson, Carter, Trotter CB: Davis, Wiggins S: Mukuba, Mickens
Now, I’m not sure if this would happen and I don’t get paid millions to make these decisions lol but this is my wish list I guess…
