Van Smith...if only

Apr 22, 2018, 7:53 PM

I cannot shake this thought of..."man, if only Van had come back..." I think losing Van is the biggest hit that we took this year. Our 2 deep on the front 7 is absolutely mythical, and I would put our top 3 cornerbacks against any receiver corps and feel great about it. However, the lack of depth and experience at safety worries me. I just think about how much scarier this defense would be with just Van coming back. Now he's probably not going to get drafted and end up in playing football in Canada somewhere. I hate that these guys get bad advice on going pro...

5’11 free safeties should almost always never come outta school early. Hate it for him.

Re: Van Smith...ironic, don’t you think?

If he’s all that to our defense (obtw: I too, agree), how can/will he not be drafted?!

But I think also of Tajh Boyd, Ben Boulware, and others - heck, even Cole Stoudt, who demolished Oklahoma - who were instrumental in making our team a winner, yet, did not make it at the pro level.

Well, I wish Van Smith luck! He made us better and will be missed.

Whatever choice(s) you make makes you. Choose wisely.

The biggest surprise to me was Jay Guillermo.

I thought for sure he'd be drafted.

Starting center on the national championship team.

+1 - the man's a baller. I think Denzell Johnson's going to be a nice surprise too!

Go Tigers.

I agree. He was destined to get knocked by the pre-draft media and he's clearly not a great fit for how the NFL is trending more toward taller rangy safeties. But he's a high IQ hard worker that had a few plays he'd like to have back (we all would) but a whole lot of good tape on him. One team will take a flyer on him knowing he'll be a good special teams guy and a cheap backup option that will at least be up to speed early if they need a backup to call on. One team will pick him over higher ceiling safeties for that reason alone.
