This will go over swimmingly.

Jul 8, 2021, 12:28 PM

No mask mandates in schools next year. So much for local choice from "REPUBLICans". And they forced the prohibition the same way we get a 21 year old federal tobacco age, and a 21 year old federal drinking age, and got 55mph speed limits in the 70's.....

The state legislature says if a school district mandates kids wear masks, they can't get or spend state cheese. Noice.

1.108. (SDE: Mask Mandate Prohibition) No school district, or any of its schools, may use any funds appropriated or authorized pursuant to this act to require that its students and/or employees wear a facemask at any of its education facilities. This prohibition extends to the announcement or enforcement of any such policy.

So, now for some purdy graphs from places more vaccinated than SC. Guess what age groups are seeing the biggest increase in cases.

How about this article from Israel?

https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/coronavirus-in-israel-44-students-from-binyamina-school-test-positive-671464

All I'm going to say about it. So with a virus 60% more transmissible, and 60% more kids getting sick, and 60% more reason for them to wear masks in school, we outlaw them. Nice. Some districts in England with kids still in schools have 15-20% of kids and countless staff out sick or exposed (quarantined). Wonder if the school can make kids stay home? No mention of that. But if they keep up the quarantine requirements for exposures, well, it's going to be ugly. If they don't, it will get ugly. Not with kids dying, but them getting sick and teachers and parents not vaccinated getting really sick.

Might change before school starts, but probably not. Biggest age group getting infected, 20-24. Next 16-19yo. Third is 10-14yo. (that's in England right now).

65% of people in the over-capacity ICU (not just hospital but in ICU) in Springfield, Missouri right now, are under 40yo. 20% of unvaccinated adults getting sick are ending up in that hospital. I dunno, math that out or ignore it, I guess. Maybe the hospital ceo is lying.

(12+) and at the highest risk of major complications and death has had the opportunity to get vaccinated.

Children under 12 just aren't getting hospitalized and dying, and I while I'm pro vaccine for everyone eligible I don't see a compelling reason to force kids to wear masks in school any longer. Are we supposed to be protecting the people who refuse to get vaccinated?

It was never promised that a vaccine was 100 percent effective at preventing COVID, but I think we have seen that it is keeping people out of the hospitals and from dying.

Jul 8, 2021, 1:19 PM

a school or district that enforces a mask mandate doesn't get the money. It says that a school or district can't use the money to require students or employees to wear masks, or to announce or enforce such a policy.

I'm just saying that when the federal government strong-armed states into a 21 year old drinking age, it was "Do it or get no highway funds". That is not what this appears to say.

Ha - sorry, but their interpretation just doesn't align to what the language reads. But you're right - it's exactly as you said.

"districts may not create or enforce any policy, which would require the wearing of face coverings. Should a district decide to act contrary to this law, state funding may be withheld."

Clear as day. I would be interested to see how state legislators justify such a rule.

school that taught gender identity or transgender studies, it's a bad way to operate. I'm bipartisan here on this. It's not the politics, or the issue, it's the mechanism for taking away local freedoms and local decisions and control. I don't like the federal government threatening to withhold money from states to do their bidding any more or less than states doing it to schools/municipalities. Schools have traditionally been given a lot of leeway here because they're schools. Parents can address the school board, local board makes the call, and you live with it. But this takes that recourse/input for parents out of the equation.

If you are a republican, this is not a good thing. Try and forget the issue, and pay attention to the power grab with tax dollars. Because Republicans are using traditionally democrat methods of grabbing power, and that's NOT a good thing. As a republican, I've always said let California do California, we will do SC. But this is more like California acts, and less like SC IMHO.

Doesn't teach the Bible? What's to stop them from denying funding to any school that teaches the Civil War was over states' rights and not slavery?

The GOP is off their ideological foundation right now. And as long as the issue breaks their way, too many don't care or see the danger.

Sad.

Jul 8, 2021, 2:36 PM

Sadly, this is conservative virtue signaling. Schools aren't going to be having mask mandates unless they think there's are mitigation measures necessary to stay open. People don't seem to be able to remember that the point of masks is to allow stuff to stay open when there's still a threat from the virus.

Roh roh.

I am really not looking forward to seeing what fall brings.

We'll be wide open, no precautions whatsoever...and there's a killer variant on the loose. Awesome. Sounds like that "Variant X" scenario I was worried about where a couple million Americans could well drop like flies.

I really do not want to see that. At all. But I think we're going to.

Seriesly Dude? You're equating being PROHIBITED from doing something to NOT being required to? Send your kids to school in transginger SpongeBob masks if you think the China virus is such a danger. Send'em to soccer practice wearing ski masks. It's still a free country last I heard.
