USuC's 2017 recruiting

Feb 15, 2016, 12:45 PM

After reading the Korncoot,Chump is burning it up recruiting in state for 2017, I thought I might need to check up on their barn burning progress. Undoubtedly, the Coots have now been reduced to level of being excited just because offers have been issued.

Yeah, they're off to a fast chicken strut with one commit -- and that guy is a 3-star.

You are completely correct.

Be prepared for Korncoot to inflate, over-sell, enhance, embellish, and otherwise SPIN Chumps recruiting "accomplishments". He will do this to try and inject himself into the process and paint a picture intended for prospective recruits that Cootlumbia is a "hot", "trending", program.

Don't be fooled!

Just last month this board was convinced we struggle to break the top 40 for the 2016 class. We finished at like 26.

It's a little early to be knocking our 2017 class.

was oversign, cut guys, keep getting commits to make up for the decootments and lie/cheat/steal to get to about 30th. Face facts, if teams behind you would have signed 25+ guys you would have been about 50th. The real number that matters is 3. Let's see if you can get to 5 this year. That'll determine how you recoot.

They have so much to look forward to in Cooterville. The legend Stever Spurrier could not win there. The legendary Lou Holtz could not win there. Now, now they have Will Muschamp; the man who took over an elite UF program and drug it into the ground in a few short years. Yes, many bright days ahead in Cooterville.

I do not mean to be...dismissive, but you did not get the #26 class in the country in 2016. Your top-ranked player was a JUCO.

It was an emergency class and it was probably the worst effort from what had become an increasingly stagnant recruiting push from Spurrier's old staff...yes, Coach Boom jumped in and paddled frantically at the end, but he really didn't change anything or land anybody of note, and the guys you got were largely unwanted, and unpursued, by other teams. Alone among your recruits was one guy who was offered by Clemson...a guy Clemson offered as a safety, and whom Carolina got as a wide receiver.

Those were largely second, and mostly third and fourth, tier guys. There really weren't any blue-chip, 20+ offer guys who could have written their tickets anywhere. And there were a bunch of major character concerns and former problem children in that group.

Muschamp will probably do better in 2017. Muschamp needs to win some games on the field and start getting some inertia off it, and win some key head-to-head battles with some key swing recruits and start getting some building-block guys to build around, though, or it could be tough sledding to shop at the level he's used to shopping at Texas and UF and Auburn...because South Carolina is just plain not at that level right now.

Maybe alone among Clemson fans, I actually wish Coach Boom some luck. I personally think a strong South Carolina is good for Clemson...it elevates our stature when people pay attention to the rivalry, and it puts a headline game at the close of every season that (would have) bumped up our SOS and given us a quality win for the perusal of The Committee. A 3-9 Carolina squad did not help Clemson last year...and if Clemson had stumbled even once during the season, that quality OOC win just would not have been there that would have gotten the Tigers into the playoff, as it did for Michigan State and Alabama and Oklahoma, who all had one loss but survived it.

Most importantly, a strong South Carolina gives Clemson a level to shoot for; Clemson got over the top in 2015 in no small part, I think, because Clemson was so durn tired of getting owned by its archrival. Tommy Bowden owned Lou Holtz, pretty much year after year, and it made him complacent...Spurrier did Dabo the favor of schooling him, and giving Dabo an archnemesis to chase and eventually overcome. I think it made Dabo a better coach to have a wily veteran rival showing him up; it definitely made Clemson a stronger program to have to fight to stay relevant, even at home. You don't get better unless you play, well, the best, and when Spurrier still had an edge on his game he was one of the best in the business.

Quozzel,

You don't think you're being a bit irrational with your assessment? If we were competing with the team that finished 10th in the country for recruits we probably would have finished higher than 26th.

McIlwain had offers from Penn State, Ohio State, Miami, Auburn and Florida. Clemson is also listed as a team that offered on both 247 and rivals.

Keir Thomas was once committed to FSU. He had offers from Miami and Auburn.

Randrecous Smith was committed to UGA and had offers from Miami.

Yes we weren't signing the top 100 kids but these kids aren't fourth tier prospects like you're claiming.

Re: USuC's 2017 recruiting

Feb 16, 2016, 12:11 PM

There were a couple that for whatever reason decided to stick or go to USC who maybe could have played for Top-25 schools. Not many. And there was a bunch of space-holders and warm-bodies at the end, too, guys even Coach Ayers at Wofford didn't have the sads because he lost out on.

I was still completely unimpressed, by and large, and the kids who had some quality - I kind of liked Marlon Character, for instance - "decooted", as they say, and went elsewhere. Definitely not a group where I was seeing guys like Clowney, Kelcy Quarles, Brandon Shell, etc, or the year before that when you'd see Marcus Lattimore, AJ Cann, Victor Hampton, Corey Robinson, Connor Shaw, etc...it was a different world then, and you especially saw Carolina getting dominant, massive players in the trenches. There was a stretch where Carolina may have had the biggest and most physical lines in college football. We're not even in the same zip code right now.

Like I said, as a fan, I think it's best that Clemson/Carolina is an event...a motherhuge, statewide, attention-getting Event, with a Capital "E", that everybody in the country is paying attention to. From a recruiting/publicity standpoint the best possible thing would be for Carolina and Clemson to come in #1 and #2 every single year, with all the college football world watching, the biggest rivalry in the country. So I'll personally root for Carolina to do well...as long as they're not playing Clemson.

This isn't politics. This isn't some ethnic grudge. It's a sporting event, a sports rivalry, and I'd like to see the best one on the planet every year if I can. And Carolina needs to do its part. Last year honestly stunk; Clemson was just trying to get the game over and done with and get to the playoffs, nobody nationally was paying attention, the level of football was pretty...low, and even when Carolina got within 5 at the end you never really got the sense the game was ever in question. Fortunately Clemson got some much better games - UNC in the ACC title game, Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, Alabama in the National Title Game - that sort of obscured how boring the Carolina game was this past year, but as an every-year thing, no, I would not want to see a Clemson/Carolina game that uninspired, or with that little fan or national interest around it. Long term, that hurts both programs.

Does anybody get excited to play Vandy? Playing a lame-duck rival is no rivalry at all. The stakes have to matter. It's amazing how some people don't get that.

Re: USuC's 2017 recruiting

Feb 16, 2016, 12:49 PM

Hard to fairly compare kids that have finished their college careers to kids who have never played a college game.

You criticized Brandon McIlwain a few weeks ago and he was a four start elite 11 qb. I highly doubt you would have spoken highly of Connor Shaw who was a mere 3 star guy without any big offers and had height concerns.

I also doubt you would have spoken highly of Corey Robinson. He was a three star project who was switched to defense during his redshirt freshman year and it was thought he was about to be out the door. Swearinger was just a three star recruit as well.

I actually think this class has much more in common with those underrated guys who made us successful than you give us credit. Guys like Evan Hinson who had a committable offer to Southern Cal have a lot of athleticism. He could play division 1 basketball and has the potential to be coached into an elite TE.

Then you have a guy like Davis who is an unpolished route runners but has legitimate track speed. He could end up a corner if WR fails like Chris Culliver.

Our last couple of cycles have taken a bunch of guys like David Johnson who were tweeters. Our current class has a bunch of DEs who have legitimate size and athleticism. They could end up busts but they could be serviceable players. I don't expect them to be elite DEs like Xavier Kelly but they're better then what we have on campus.

You're right though that we had to take some reaches on kids recruited at lower levels. But you're fooling yourself if you think they're not skilled enough for FCS.

Some of those kids may end up being cut from the team in two years. But when you have a roster in disarray like we have it does you no good to leave those scholarships vacant. Wish we had taken Lorenzo Mauldin a couple years ago than the kids we thought were better than him.

Funny you should mention Corey Robinson...I saw him at the 2009 Shrine Bowl, I think, and watched him in one of the NC squad's practices. Kid was...IMMENSE, maybe the biggest OL prospect I've ever seen in my life, and he had some of the heaviest hands I'd ever seen, just rocked guys when he locked on.

Also seemed to have Cory Lambert disease...seemed oddly passive and was just plain "nice"...I dunno, I was watching him, kept changing my mind if I was seeing a guy who didn't need to play football, ever, or if I was watching a 5-star. The 3-star rating he got probably split the difference. But it was obvious he was something different. I'd have DEFINITELY rolled the dice on that one...and the Gamecock coaches did, and got an NFL left tackle. Which was definitely a possibility anybody with eyes could have foreseen.

And everybody who ever watched Chris Culliver knew he was a DB.

Muschamp may recruit "well" but it will not be as good as uga, ut, and likely Florida is recruiting, and it #### well won't be as good as Clemsons.

Even if they landed 4 and 5 star recruits, (which they won't) we all know muschump can't coach. Never in a million years will Sc ever bring in the talent Florida does, and the chumpster couldn't win down there. Enough said.
