USC's rise coincided w/ the hiring of their S&C coach a few

years ago. Only in the last few years did they finally begin to look the physical equal of teams like Bama, LSU etc. They have done most of their winning without Lattimore, so it's not just his impact. I don't know what the answer is, but we have to find a way to do the same thing. Otherwise, all the skill in the world is going to continue to get "punished" in games against good, physical teams.

Our S&C Coordinator left last February. Our current S&C Coordinator made some changes in the program after he took over earlier this year. The 4 game winning streak started in 2009. Though our record that year was so-so, it included close losses to the 2 top teams in the nation at that time: Alabama and Florida. Thus our average record was not reflective as to how good we were back then. The year 2009 coincided with Spurrier's 5th year at South Carolina. Thus, that was the first time that all the players on the roster were his recruits.

Batson has been at Clemson since West; he hired an assistant in Feb. Batson is in charge.
The S&C coach at USC made a huge difference and now is at Penn State.

Our record in 2009 was 7-6. Our conference record in 2009 was 3-5. I'm not familiar with your definition of
"so-so".

Perhaps more importantly, it coincided with the USUC domination of top 5 instate recruits 5 years ago and they continue to beat us each year with SC talent.

Batson is not the problem here. Poor talent evaluation, poor coaching and poor player development (from a football perspective) our much more likely causes for our ineptitude than a strength and conditioning disadvantage. Strength and conditioning doesn't help a completely busted coverage or a lack of a dominant pass rusher. We have no secondary. No elite playmaker on the defensive line. The superstar recruit linebackers have been underwhelming thus far. The offensive playcalling in the Scar game was atrocious. Tajh had an off game. There are just so many other issues. Don't you think Kevin Steele, Brent Venebles, Coach Cheese, Coach Brooks, Coach Rumph or any of these other experienced coaches would have spoken up if they thought we had a serious deficiency in that area? Dabo has already addressed the Batson thing and he cast it aside as nonsense. We simply need to recruit better on the lines and on the defensive side of the ball if we want to be an elite squad.

We have a number of current Dlinemen that were 4 star recruits, and we have good number of highly rated Dlinemen coming in. The Offensive Line was much improved over last year's OL. The run blocking, while not where it needs to be, was much improved compared to last year. With some of young OL having a year under their belt, our OL should be very solid next year.
Now some posters will bring up the SCU game as example of the OL not being good. The pressure that SCU got on Tajh had more do with Chad Morris' play calling, than how good our OL is. We were running the ball good with the running backs in the 1st qtr and Morris completely abandoned it the rest of the game. Also, the offense ran at it's slowest pace all year. All season long we didn't have a game where we had that many plays get under the 15 second mark on the play clock, as we did against SCU. Why Morris chose to do those things is mind blogging. SCU has two great DE's, but the rest of their defense isn't all that great. We should have ran the ball straight at Clowney and Taylor to wear them down, then we should have started passing more once Clowney and Taylor were huffing and puffing.

Our defense was more than just our DEs. While Clowney had a great year, Taylor's was "solid". Quarles, Hampton and Williams are very good players.

most part, right? I know we have recruited well, at least the DT spot, but those guys are still relatively young. We need to be 2 and 3 deep like the Bama and LSU's of the world if we want to compete at that level. Also, as I'm sure you are aware, recruiting services ratings don't always pan out. We might have recruited well on paper, but some of these guys just don't seem to be measuring up. I agree the OL has been ab right spot all year and of course I pointed out our playcalling woes in the Scar game in my original post. I agree with your analysis. My point was that those issues are much more likely to be the cause of our woes than this whole strength and conditioning stuff that has been abuzz the last 2 years.

It also coincided with SCAR actually having good defensive players for once, ie gilmore, ingram, clowney, shaq wilson, quarles, devin taylor, eric norwood, etc. it's amazing what NFL talent will do for your defense - unfortunately we don't have much of that this year, like we've had in years past. I love our guys but I don't see anyone on D starting in the NFL, plus a lack of depth and then all the secondary injuries - it's a recipe for losing.
As far as their players looking more physical, thats also partially just good recruiting - physical freaks like Clownboy come into college looking that way, and that's why they're good in the first place.
