Really interesting quote

Nov 26, 2012, 11:04 AM

In April I was listening to the Paul Finebaum show and he had a former college coach on. At the end of the interview this coach was asked about the USC-Clemson rivalry and Carolina's recent success. He said,

"It seems to me that Clemson has gotten hung up on getting all these skill players, and Carolina has emphasized getting strong, tough linemen. I know the skill players are exciting to watch, but if it's me, I'd rather have the linemen all day long."

The coach? Danny Ford.

Enough said

A great O-line can make average skill players look good.

Never had a problem with toughness when he was the coach

the ACC was pretty weak back then too, but we stomped OOC opponents.

I'll second that. Carolina's players were night and day bigger than our guys.

90 plays a game is hard on them. we had very little help from the depth chart.

i hope that changes with next year.

If that's the case, how do the NFL guys do it? They play 16 games in 17 weeks, and that's if they don't make the playoffs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nov 26, 2012, 11:46 AM

the very reason you see very few olineman leaving early and most needing redshirt years to adjust.

the point is them playing 90-100 snaps a game, meaning by the end of the year they've played 3 more games in the same period of time.

the giants ran 60 offensive plays last night?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it's been that way since bowden. i hope 2011 recruiting

Nov 26, 2012, 11:15 AM

class is everything the coaches think it is because they put a lot of emphasis on the lines.

they are being selective this year because of limited numbers, but hopefully they don't lose focus on the biggunz.

bowden's small ball philosophy for olineman that could move in space hurt his teams and our recruiting for years. just like vic's emphasis on safety sized lbs.

Yep. "They don't believe what I believe."

Nov 26, 2012, 11:15 AM

But Dabo is smart. The flashy skill players trick the knuckledraggers into thinking we have a good team and a good coach. Even when that is shown to be false on the field of play, they still remain loyal to him because "he is a good recruiter."

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

fooled the experts & his peers into winning the bobby dodd

Nov 26, 2012, 11:29 AM

didn't he knuckledragger?

clemson was picked by all the experts to win only so much the last 2 years. they exceeded all expectations based on the experts analysis. just because your expectations are absurd doesn't mean everyone else is a knuckedragger, knuckledragger.

it does not make me happy to lose 4 years in a row to a spurrier led gamechicken team, but they are doing it different in columbia. the man owns the university and gets everything he wants. dabo has said he would take jucos in a heart beat. clemson doesn't have the majors, yet, to accept many if any.

clemson would pass on jarriel king because of character issues. go down the list of players clemson would not have on their team... hampton is another.

the acc has always sucked as a whole. there have been a few lions or tigers or bears oh my, but danny ford didn't face any tougher tests in conference, nor did bowden.

i don't like small ball, i'm biased against it, but i'm not going to say dabo hasn't raised the level of play around these parts. he has.

i'm still not sold on whether small ball can win nationally, but it's hard to argue that there are a lot of very good coaches using it.

Have you ever heard of capital letters? That's what happens

Nov 26, 2012, 11:38 AM

when you hold down the "shift" key and then type any letter.

Other than that I agree with your assessment that CT is a knuckledragger. He also has a reading comprehension problem, which he already demonstrated today.

We went after Clowney hard and he was the difference in the game.

uSC hasn't recruited different linemen than we have....

Nov 26, 2012, 11:23 AM

1) We are young on both lines.

2) uSC has a VASTLY SUPERIOR strength program. Their kids don't come into college bigger and stronger; they make 'em that way. Unless we fix this GLARING AND OBVIOUS problem, we will never become an elite team.

Dabo stood in front of us last year, after getting physically whipped, and he said anyone who thought we have a strength problem was "insane".

Mr. Swinney has admitted to making some mistakes in his young coaching career. Well he will fail as a head coach unless he fixes the OBVIOUS AND GLARING strength mistake we have. If he can't see it after once again getting losing due to strength, then he will never take us to the elite level.

Get some fresh S&C blood in here now, while we have the youth and a talent influx on the lines. Let's make this a program where we don't need to be concerned with getting physically whipped on the LOS. Like Clemson is supposed to be. The Clemson name wasn't built on getting physically dominated, and it's way past time to fix it.

Don't disagree with you Stanley and I would imagine that Danny was also implying that in his statement. Beyond just recruiting, I think he was saying that Carolina puts an emphasis on developing linemen because that's where football games are won and lost. That's where Danny won his.

Nov 27, 2012, 6:11 AM

ask me why I remember this, but it stuck in my head). He told the interviewer the most important position on the field was OL men. The interviewer said what about the QB? Danny's response was something like, you give me great OL men and I will turn one of them into a QB.

I was not sure how serious he was, but he was making a point. It certainly fit his scheme, control the OL and don't beat yourself.

I think we have been recruiting to weaknesses. A couple years ago DL was great and WR were not. Now it is reversed, and all the recruiting press this year is on the DL.

That said, I think we would win more big games with Danny's focus. I also think Dabo is a smart guy and has come a long way in a couple years. I think he is still putting the pieces together, but I like what he is building.

Nov 27, 2012, 12:18 PM

I also remember it being said that Danny would go into a game with 5 or 6 running plays and 8 to 10 passing plays and that was his entire gameplan, and it was all he needed because execution was the key.
I understand things change and there's a natural evolution to the game, but it certainly did work.

the numbers. The problem is the strength program.

Our LOS guys are not being developed in the weight room and towards 'game strength' like our better opponents are.

Hood's post uSC article was dead on. It's the biggest issue in our football program right now. It should be visible to a blind man.

Until we fix the elephant in the room, we will continue to struggle when the LOS is challenged.
