Usa vs México

Jun 6, 2021, 10:13 PM

Intense as hell so far. 1–1. Mexico had a 2nd goal ruled out for offsides and then usa scored the equalizer a minute later

We have to take #15 out, lord he cost us the first goal and came close to giving up another. Also Pulisic has found himself quite a lot of space at the top of the backline in the midfield area but he has not gotten the ball from the backs at all. Have to find that pass and let him turn and run at the backline. I'm just glad it's tied at half.

What a game!

Usa wins 3-2 in extra time. Mexico fans were pelting players with projectiles

That game was F’in insane. A turnover in the 18 that resulted in a goal, two PKs in extra time including a penalty save by our backup keeper, worthless sacks of ##### fans injuring our players with projectiles, a ridiculously clueless head official, fans on the field, even someone from the crowd infiltrating the studio crew and jumping off of the set. This game made Saturdays in the SEC look like an Ivy League crew meet.

Awesome stuff. Ugly. As. Sin.

Looked like El Tri was just going to walk us around the park early, but man, the kids surely did rally. Half our kids don't even have to shave yet, but that is a mighty talented pack of guys, and if you look at where they play...I just shake my head. Chelsea. Juventus. Barcelona. Man City. Borussia Dortmund. Red Bull Leipzig. Roma. Porto. Lille. Galatasaray. Wolfsburg. Pretty much pick a Euro League or Champions League team right now, we've got a player on it, which is why we somehow won despite the fact that they aren't shaving yet.

Gonna be a really cool generation to watch grow up, for sure. So much for the "Americans will never be good at soccer" argument.

Americans are now good at soccer. We finally grew a generation of players that can play. I know. I helped grow 'em - Academy, ODP, school teams - and you could see the progress that was happening on the ground out there with the game out there, and how much better the kids were than the old farts from my generation who were basically just kicking the can up the field and really didn't know the game...and I'm darn proud. (Sniff!) I knew, in an intellectual way, this was coming, still really cool to see it finally happening.

We are still kind of a mess at the back and in the midfield

Jun 7, 2021, 10:15 AM

although Weston McKinnie is fantastic. Most of our premium, young talent is in the attack and, so far, we've struggled to get the ball forward to them. And when we do get forward, we often leave too much space in behind and leave our CBs in terrible positions.

Gregg needs to figure out what to do with Dest because he's just not working at LB/LW. He's been nothing short of a liability out there, and he's far, far too talented for that to be the case. He's just not being put in the proper place to succeed. It seems like he would at least, you know, try him at his natural RB position where he plays at Barca.

I loved the toughness and resiliency from the young guys though. There were multiple moments in that game where they could've just wilted and gone away quietly.

I'm not really even sure where the malfunction is. It looks like it's clicking at times. Other times...it's just like: wow. Did you guys even practice? At all? And I'm staring real hard at Gregg Berhalter, wondering if he's some sort of gym teacher hack.

His teams at Columbus Crew looked a lot tighter than that by the end, so...not sure. I know he's got a system he wants to play, I know what it's supposed to look like, but it's just not taken yet for whatever reason, not sure why.

It could just be COVID disruption, youth, and time. That is a mighty young bunch and what he wants is maybe ambitious. Mexico's got a much, much more veteran group of players to build around, and possessing the ball's a culture there.

So...I'll endure, because he is trying to get them to build from the back, high-press, go after teams where they live, all the stuff you wanna see, positive, ambitious soccer. So I'll give him a minute to build it...but I'll agree, right now, it's...got a good ways to go, for sure.

I'd love to be able to build from the back, but right

Jun 7, 2021, 10:43 AM

now we just kind of lack guys at the back and in the MF who are confident and skilled enough on the ball to really do that against an aggressive, high pressing team like Mexico. We have some players like Pulisic, Reyna, and even Dest that can fantastic on the ball and can beat defenders 1v1, but we kind of lack the ability to get it to them under pressure.

Re: I'd love to be able to build from the back, but right

Jun 7, 2021, 11:08 AM

I think a healthy Tyler Adams as opposed to a Kellyn Acosta at the 6 changes so much, though, because he's so clean on the ball and provides so much cover for the backs, and that looses McKinnie to range forwards as your 8.

I personally think in this setup Musah's your 10, with Reyna and Pulisic as your wingers. IMHO, push Dest to left back, make him pick and choose his moments to come forwards, combining with Pulisic, and while right now either Yedlin or Cooper is our right back, frankly I'm not overly crazy about either. One guy I'm keeping an eye on is that kid at Roma, Bryan Reynolds; I think he's better over the long run, and there's another one at Barca B who's a really slick passer called Konrad de Fuente who I think is probably the best of all over the long term, watch him sometime, he'll remind you a bit of a poor man's Marcelo. That will cure what ails you, as far as passing out of the back.

Obviously Brooks is your main CB. I was middlin' pleased with Mark McKenzie; he's athletic and a really good defender, but his passing was definitely suspect and I think he's going to get beat out over the next year by Chris Richards at Bayern Munich. Richards is just so smooth. He's athletic, and just an effortless passer out of the back, and he's an even better athlete than Brooks. We could also really use Aaron Long back.

Oh...another guy I think can help us as a 10 is Julian Green. Yeah, that guy. He had a really good year in the 2 Bundesliga and was probably one the 2-3 best players in the 2 and got his team promoted with yet another Johnny-on-the-spot goal, and he's finally developed some lead in his butt and I think he can legit help us. Watch for him in the Gold Cup; he's come a ways as a player, IMHO.

What that still leaves you looking for is a striker. I personally really like Darryl Dik-E (Lordy, T-net won't even let me spell his name!). We have all this flash and dazzle, I honestly think we just need a big basic striker who can bully and shoulder and win headers in the box and is intelligent in his movement, and Dik-E, is that; he scored goals for fun in the Championship with Barnsley and looked like a poor man's Lukaku. Just give our guys an end point to go with the ball, and let's see what happens, you know? Dik-E, IMHO, is that end point.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree on Dik.e... hope he gets some run soon.

Jun 7, 2021, 12:22 PM

Josh Sargent does some good things, but he's not a great finisher.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh I love Dik-e. He reminds me a lot of Lukaku

He was playing high school soccer in Oklahoma just a few years ago. His upside is high.

Re: Usa vs México

Jun 7, 2021, 9:43 AM

Cherry on top after the Atl hat trick: Braves beat the Dodgers, Hawks held on to take Game 1 from the 76ers, and Julio The Diva Jones got his walking papers - I don't have to hear/see another possible Diva Destination!

Huge win for USA. Between history in general, the youth of our team and Gerardo Daniel "Tata" Martino being Mexico's head coach. Martino is one heck of a coach. Some may remember his Atlanta United teams. Where he brought that team instant success, winning the MLB Cup in their second season. Then bolted after the 2018 sesson to be Mexico's miester.

Re: Usa vs México

Jun 7, 2021, 10:08 AM

Yeah, I know. I wish we had Tata, frankly. Mexico's better-organized, tighter, know what they're about a lot better. Our tactics last night, starting Tim Ream at left back...phew, that was...predictable. Especially with Acosta at the 6; Acosta's awareness, anticipation, and touch are...not great. (It's like, Berhalter...yo...Tyler Adams already, please. Like, at halftime. I know he's just coming back, but seriously, there's a huge gulf there.) Acosta's athletic and willing, and that covers some sins, but it took Lainez all of about two minutes to turn those two inside out once he got into the game, they just weren't going to stay with him, any more than folks are going to have any joy covering Justyn Ross with a safety this year.

It's like...uh, Berhalter...dude. C'mon. I almost got the sense the kids won despite his tactics, honestly. And we're definitely still looking for that marquee striker. (Mexico's got several, alas.)

We just have so many young guys, though. Fun to watch 'em growing up.

Adams has been battling an injury so hopefully that's

Jun 7, 2021, 10:25 AM

the reason he was used sparingly. When he's fit, he 100% needs to be in the starting XI.

I was hoping to see Yunas Musah out there at some point. It's really disappointing he didn't get into either match. He's our most promising MF prospect and our MF was a pretty glaring weakness in these two matches. We got Yueill (who was DREADFUL) and Acosta (who wasn't all that much better) and not even one look at Musah.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was there last night...

Jun 7, 2021, 11:42 AM

Absolutely bonkers! Sat in the American Outlaws section, and as usual was a great time...if you've never had an opportunity to 1) go in person or 2) sit in that section, I highly recommend it.

Easily one of the best experiences at an in-person sporting event...

Glad to see the young guns coming of age...nothing about last night was pretty, but there's something to be said for willing yourselves to victory against a tough side in Mexico...i think we witnessed those guys grow up in front of our eyes last night. Definitely optimistic for the future!
