Upstate school shooting

Mar 31, 2022, 3:25 PM

One student has been shot at Tanglewood Middle School in Greenville County, and a suspect is in custody. There is no information on the condition of the student who was shot.

Thank you for your service to the community. Being a middle school teacher is no joke. My wife just reluctantly retired after 37 yrs teaching kindergarten. I'm sure you agree, it's changed so much it's almost unrecognizable. When she started 1 or 2 kids came from a troubled home, now it's about half the class. It's not just about income level. Well off parents can be just as bad in a different way.

How do you know the dead person didn’t draw and fire first?

Stupid response!!!!

The shooter was 12 years old...

Back in 2012 (I believe) the US Supreme Court ruled that juveniles convicted of murder can't be subject to a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The Court has also ruled that youths 15 or younger can't be sentenced to death. The thought is immaturity diminishes their culpability, as does their susceptibility to outside pressures and influences. In addition, their heightened capacity for reform apparently entitles them to a separate set of standards or punishments.

In SC, lawmakers passed the Juvenile Justice Reform Act which would, among other things, allow judges to impose sentences less than the mandatory minimum for children convicted of murder.

That said, the Tanglewood shooter, who walked up behind the victim during a class change and shot him in the back (which suggests the shooting was entirely premeditated), will spend some time in a juvenile detention facility, but some liberal judge will probably release him before he turns 21.

The kid was his best friend. There is more to it

I’m sure.

He passed, yes.

Apr 1, 2022, 5:40 PM [ in reply to Re: Upstate school shooting ]

I’d say the parents should be tried. The kid is a no contest. The school district should also suffer some damage allowing a gun into the school undetected for over 4 hours… Our middle school had no buses yesterday for their use to evacuate Tanglewood. Terrible.

Now you can watch the news interviews of the frightened and concerned parents who are all of a sudden concerned about their child's wellbeing. Said parents without the cameras around don't mind subjecting their children to a less than ideal home life. They act shocked and question how something like this could occur.

Hold the parents accountable for their kids actions? C'mon man. That stuff is hard. Besides, it'"society's fault" anyway.

Mar 31, 2022, 9:36 PM

No I don't think the parents should be held accountable for their child's actions. I was simply saying the parents subject the children to a terrible home life and then wonder why a child shot another child. The only way I think the parents should be held accountable is that if it's discovered that the parents were grossly negligent and that is how the child obtained a firearm. Sorry for the confusion.

Gross negligence occurred

when a 12 year old was able to access a loaded gun he took to school to shoot his friend.

Americas gun problem

Apr 1, 2022, 1:28 AM

Just another example of too many instances

The US outpaces the rest of the world in gun violence by far. Especially in schools.

Re: Americas gun problem

Apr 1, 2022, 9:49 AM

The US has a culture problem. It’s disrespect for human life.

It’s everywhere you look from movies to games to music to tv to our schools/neighborhoods/etc. Our “news” is obsessed with it.

Guns make it easier to take a life but they don’t cause anything to happen.

Just to see how this tragedy would be reported nationally, I watched the NBC Nightly News both last night and tonight.
I admit that I was surprised that the shooting wasn't even mentioned - it's terrible that school violence has become so commonplace that it didn't even rate coverage!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm sure the school will get blamed..............

Apr 1, 2022, 8:59 AM

but truthfully twitter and snapchat are most likely the platforms for this tragedy. If your kids are on either they should leave. They are platforms for pure evil.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The school is already being blamed...

Apr 1, 2022, 9:08 AM

for not having metal detectors or a higher level of security, yet these same people doing the complaining and finger pointing are the same people who will not support tax increases to pay for those types of things in schools.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Let's be honest...........

Apr 1, 2022, 10:14 AM

you can put all of those things in place and a fool will still find a way to be a fool. They could've used some of that CARES money to put all kinds of things in place. But a fool will be a fool. Schools aren't prisons. The schools in my area put metal detectors in and require school personnel (administrators, teachers, custodians, etc.) to operate them That's about as stupid of an idea as you will find. You should have security and law enforcement operate them. But it doesn't matter what you do if someone really wants to bring a weapon in the building.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The question a lot of people will be asking...

Apr 1, 2022, 11:00 AM

is how did a 12 year old get a gun.

If the parent or parents kept a gun in the house that was accessible by that kid, the parents should face charges as well.

I can't remember if SC has a “negligent storage law,” which can make gun-owning parents criminally liable for crimes committed with their firearms by their children.

If you’re a parent and you own guns, lock your guns safely away so your children, or anyone else for that matter, can get your legally owned guns.

I firmly believe that gun owners who don't properly secure their firearms, and those weapons end up in the wrong hands and are used to kill innocent people, those gun owners should face some very serious consequences.

They do.

Apr 1, 2022, 5:43 PM

When adopting, part of the home interview is an inspection of weapons inventory and storage. They have to meet specific guidelines to qualify.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The platforms have nothing to do with it. All
