Updated China Virus Morality Rates

[4]
Posted: Mar 22, 2020, 8:31 AM

Couple of notes:
- This is a six day snapshot of the mortality rates for the top 10 countries with the highest reported cases of the virus. The numbers are a snapshot in time from the Johns Hopkins dashboard.

- The "First Reported" dates are best approximations of when each country confirmed their first cases of the China Virus. I have yet to find a single source that lists these dates as exact and had to pull these dates from numerous news reports - some of which conflicted by a day or two. I realize the US date will raise and eyebrow but it is directly from the CDC site.

- I'm highly suspect of the numbers coming from China and Iran - two countries that will lie about anything.

- Of the countries listed, the USA is the only country trending downward in mortality rate at the moment. Let's hope and pray we continue the downward trend.

- Germany, China, and South Korea are relatively steady on the mortality rates with minimal increases.

I look at these numbers as more of a curiosity than anything else. Because every country is different, with different cultures and customs, medical capabilities, and reactions to the disease, I don't put a lot of weight in comparing one country's numbers vs another. Just because Italy has a high death rate doesn't mean everyone else will. At the end of the day, the only numbers I really care about are the USA numbers.

Well - only took 3 posts to get a TDS patient to feel compelled to make this a political thread in order to try and bash Trump. If you had a shred of intellectual honesty you would not continue to peddle this "Trump called the virus a hoax" line. So for the millionth time, I'll set the record straight - President Trump did not call the virus a hoax. He likened the Democrats' criticism of his administration's response to the China Virus to their efforts to impeach him, saying "this is their new hoax."

He said it was under control and that cases would go down not up. This may have been to keepbis calm tho but it was ignorant or a lie one. He did not call it a hoax but he did act like it wasn't a big deal. He has ofcourse changed his view as many others have as well. Dems are always going to claim he is handling this poorly and Reps will always wipe his butt for him. It is a sad this to see with neither side having much logically reasoning of their view of him.

The libtard media and the left have attacked the President the day he claimed he was running for office. I find so weird the criticism he receives given their isn't one person alive or who has died that could take the constant attacks and yes that includes Donald Trump. Of course he attacks back and sometimes probably over does it but if you were attacked the way he is every second of every day I wonder how you'd act. They lie about him create false stories not ever correcting them, they twist his words and they claim he didn't do something he did or claim he did something he didn't. They call our Chief-in-Office every name in the book which I find odd because I looked every where to find the articles and clips of him being all these things they claim before he ran for President and guess what, I can't find them. I find it weird, and hope you would as well, that he wasn't any kind of -ism or -ist before him running. One of the 3 main networks in this country, NBC, attacks him relentlessly had no problem before his running for office airing his reality tv show. Every interview done before him running he was an entrepreneur, businessman or realtor mogul but never not once was he a racist or xenophobic or any of the other things they claimed. As far as the Wuhan Virus everyone was dealing with limited facts and at that time things didn't seem to be bad. Unless you can tell the future or unless you expect someone to be perfect things change. At the time there was no need to create mass hysteria, and some still think so today, so I find it odd you think he should have known what would happen in late March. The media pushed out mass hysteria before mass hysteria was warranted. The way this President was getting attacked sometimes it is easier to go with the flow and with more time comes more info so you are constantly changing plans. Let's not forget that there are articles out there that state China could have prevented 95% of cases if they wouldn't have lied and destroyed evidence. I think Trump supporters get so upset because of the rampant hypocrisy. Trump gets bashed for some of the same exact things Obama was praised for and let's not also forget that Obama waited until almost 1,000 people had died and millions were infected with the H1N1 virus before he did the first thing. Thats just one example. The level of ignorance it takes to blame the President for any of this goes beyond anything known to a sane man.

I do not blame him for the virus ofcourse and I believe he is doing a fine job now. He should have know it was more dangerous than he either let on or knew when he said it was under control and that it wouldn't spread more in the USA. I agree the Dems would say he was doing wrong even if they knew he was doing great things. He also had no excuse for some of the crazy tweets he post and the way he responds to questions. He does wear his heart on his sleeve and that is okay tho. If Trump were the ##### QB and tweeted or said of the the things he has said this site would say he was a complete piece of crap but since most on here are Rep. It doesn't matter what he says. Ofcourse he gets some pass for some of the good he has done for the country. I do not hate him at all. I believe he has done very well except for the way he represents our nation when he talks for the most part. I'm not going to say he is a DA like the Dems would because he is certainly a smart man but some of the things he says are very disrespectful which maybe he didn't grow up with the same morals as most of us have down south. He has his good and bad sides as anybody does. As our President he should be more respectful and well manored imo.

The President never said "that cases would go down not up". The prevalent anti-Trump press ran with this narrative from the 26 February Coronavirus Task Force briefing. The media jackals will take a small snippet of a response and use it as evidence of a lie. Here is the President's response at that press conference:

"Q Mr. President, the CDC said yesterday that they believe it’s inevitable that the virus will spread in the United States, and it’s not a question of “if” but “when.” Do you agree with that assessment?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, I don’t think it’s inevitable. It probably will. It possibly will. It could be at a very small level or it could be at a larger level. Whatever happens, we’re totally prepared. We have the best people in the world. You see that from the study. We have the best prepared people, the best people in the world.

Congress is willing to give us much more than we’re even asking for. That’s nice for a change. But we are totally ready, willing, and able. It’s a term that we use. It’s “ready, willing, and able.” And we have — we have — it’s going to be very well under control.

Now, it may get bigger, it may get a little bigger. It may not get bigger at all. We’ll see what happens. But regardless of what happens, we are totally prepared."

The President certainly made no unequivocal claim "that the virus would go down and not up." Was his response optimistic - even overly optimistic? Absolutely yes. But his optimism was also tempered with plenty of caution as he clearly stated that other outcomes were possible.

I'm very clear-eyed when it comes to President Trump. He speaks in a non-politician language that most rational/normal people understand and get the point that he is making. Is his choice of words polished and focus group tested - not by a mile. Among the reasons the DC elites (of which journalists consider themselves) hate him is because of his unpolished manner of speaking. They always try to use it as a cudgel to bludgeon the man as if he is lying or stupid. If people would actually listen to what Trump says in it's full context, they will find that most of the interpretive journalism being practiced by the media jackals is nothing but a poo smearing exercise. So if presenting the facts and giving the full context to some of these supposed "Trump lies" is considered butt wiping then it is a good thing I have plenty of Charmin...

It is butt whipping to pretend that Trump doesn't say racist hateful remarks from time to time. He has childish reactions to criticism of him from the media or democrats. If you do not agree with this I am sorry for your blindness. I do not dislike him and I do not believe he is intentional the way he is sometimes. I will argue with people all day who say he is a complete scumbag because he isn't. He is certainly out of line from time to time tho. It is okay to support him but do not ignore his wrong doings.

Even the left leaning Snopes confirms he did not call the virus itself a hoax. But of course libs love to bend and distort anything that better fits their narrative.

"In context, Trump did not say in the passage above that the virus itself was a hoax. He instead said that Democrats’ criticism of his administration’s response to it was a hoax."

Re: Please get your FACTS and "quotes" straight . . .

Well, this isn't much of a vindication for Trump, from Snopes. He didn't call the virus 'itself' a hoax but he called the virus the new "Democratic Hoax". That's not much of a reprieve. The point is that he was arguing that the Virus was no big deal but rather just something else used against him. And in fact, he ignored the Intelligence reports he'd been getting since January that the "chinese virus" could easily become a Pandemic. Even now, on this late date, we don't have enough test kits and doctors in New York and California are screaming for supplies. Trump did nothing to get ahead of this thing. When he "shut down" Chinese air travel, he only shut down foreign travelers from China, American's could still come and go for another month.

Snopes:

"What's True
During a Feb. 28, 2020, campaign rally in South Carolina, President Donald Trump likened the Democrats' criticism of his administration's response to the new coronavirus outbreak to their efforts to impeach him, saying "this is their new hoax." During the speech he also seemed to downplay the severity of the outbreak, comparing it to the common flu.

What's False
Despite creating some confusion with his remarks, Trump did not call the coronavirus itself a hoax."

They have been testing. US data is a few weeks out from reliable. Really, all data is suspect since there is no way to approximate asymptomatic folks. In that regard, mortality rates are probably worst case estimates.

Not sure why OP thinks US has moral high ground. Our gov't has slowly been slipping for decades...one could argue exponentially. FYI, I cannot stand either party and I don't watch cable news.

Not exactly sure where you are getting that I believe the US has the moral high ground. Just pointing out the facts as they exist today - the USA mortality trend is the only one going down - I hope and pray that trend continues and wish every other country will also see a decline in mortality rates. But at the end of the day, I care more about the USA than any other country - guess my 27 years in the US Army bred that into me...

our mortality rate is going down because we are one of the only countries in the world, outside of maybe sub-saharan Africa that is still in the process of trying to get adequate testing off the ground. We will know what our mortality rate is in another couple of months, and it will be based on whether or not we overwhelm our critical care facilities. If we manage to normalize the number of sick, the number will be relatively low. If we are having to park ARDS patients out in waiting rooms, with no ventilators available, we're going to be at 10% mortality.

New York, California and S.Dakota are already screaming for medical supplies. California asked Trump for a Naval Hospital ship to be parked in L.A. harbor. Trump needs to use the Defense Protection Act to force companies to make masks, face-shields, gowns, gloves, and other medical supplies.

If our healthcare workers get sick for lack of proper protection equipment we're going to be in a lot of trouble.

The US is, has been, and always will be on high moral ground because we are a nation of great people. Of course we have made mistakes. I am not including many US Senators and Representatives, on both sides of the aisle, because it has always been apparent that they care more about themselves than our country. There are many that do care ..... many that don't (except when they are on TV).

An important note on the U.S. mortality rates. We've done, in comparison to other countries very few tests. This is now getting better as more test kits have become available. With more tests the number of infected goes up, driving down the proportional death rate.

As more people tested begin to die, the proportional death rate will go up. We still have an incredible shortage of test kits. It's unforgivable that we're so far behind the curve.

They're now estimating 100's of thousands will be infected in NY and LA. People can spread the virus without themselves feeling symptoms for days. We need to test as many people as possible to identify the infected, asymptomatic or not, and isolate them.

We've got a long way to go. The current proportional death rate in the U.S., because of lack of testing is currently misleading.
