When did dryers get so cottdang expensive?

May 3, 2021, 11:00 AM

Dang it's basically a motor, a heater and a drum in sheet metal.

Anywho, our 20 year old Maytag finally crapped out (the motor seized up), so I gotta buy 1 this week.

Suggestions? And a close line is NOT and option.

All appliances are ridiculous

May 3, 2021, 11:03 AM

+$2000 on a fridge.

dishwashers are 600

Stove/oven is another 1000 plus.

And if you have a wall oven, shut it down. 2000 just for that.

I saw one $150 or so...But by the time I get a repairman

May 3, 2021, 11:20 AM

out here I'll prolly have $300-$400 in it. Plus I'm not 100% sure that's the entire problem. Since it's 20 years old,, may just be time to suck it up and buy a new one.

IF you can even find one these days......

May 3, 2021, 11:29 AM

some stores have delivery times that are weeks, if not months out. Good luck out there, the appliance game is brutal right now.

I had to buy one last fall. Found the simplest, most basic one I could, knobs, bells, whistles-wise. Simple man, I need dry clothes as fast as possible, that's all I require in a dryer. Don't need no "Wi-Fi/Smart Sense/steam cycle/EZ load" junk. Gimme a timer knob and "ON" button.

Fortunately found one available at the local Lowes (prolly the only store you will even find any appliances actually IN STOCK), plus it was 30% off at the time. Got lucky, a $1000 dryer for $700. Hooked the trailer up, drove to Lowes, and hauled it home. Maytag Commercial Grade Dryer Model #MEDP576KW. Has an upgraded motor in it, which I guess makes it "commercial". Spent my money on power, not wi-fi compatibility. Works like a freaking champ.

Replaced the fridge this month, not many options. They say it is about shipping.

May 3, 2021, 11:36 AM

and buy appliances on the cheap.

Bout to pull the trigger on an 1800 dollar gas stove/oven. For 900.

Bite the bullet and buy one.

May 3, 2021, 11:41 AM

You don't EVEN want to start pricing the dryers made of lumber!

Lumber is going up faster than gas.

Re: When did dryers get so cottdang expensive?

May 3, 2021, 5:00 PM

Sad tale -- as I would rather buy from HD.
Ordered a Fridge in and the large guys who brought it said too many bushes were in the way. I said I can clear that in 5 minutes, but they left because they did not want to carry it up some deck stairs.
I complained to all the HD emails I could find and got computer generated emails back.

Last week Lowes had no problem bringing me one. The deal right now is model choices are limited.

I don't blame this on HD. Good employees are hard to find these days.

UPDATE: Bought an LG from Lowe's on sale $200 off.

May 4, 2021, 7:38 AM

Add on a 5% discount for using thee Lowe's card.

Still sucks there's another $40 or so for the power cord, clamps, hose, and some solid waste fee.

At lease it will be here tomorrow.

May 4, 2021, 7:42 AM

By checking the lint trap

Did you even try to power cycle it?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

meant to tell you - save the power cord from the old one

May 4, 2021, 8:21 AM [ in reply to UPDATE: Bought an LG from Lowe's on sale $200 off. ]

I do NOT understand why power cords don't automatically come with a major appliance (yeah, I know, different outlet terminals in different houses, etc). But the fact is you HAVE to have one for it to operate, so it should be built into the cost.

One of those little wallet gouges the sales crooks have cleverly instituted.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LG's up, ho's down. If that dryer can't tumble on low,

May 4, 2021, 8:32 AM [ in reply to UPDATE: Bought an LG from Lowe's on sale $200 off. ]

it bound to drizzown.
