Unlikely but possible: Is this BB's last game as our HC?
Mar 14, 2013, 3:05 PM
|
|
Don't think one can ever know in these situations, but this possibility does exist.
I think it would be pretty unlikely (less than 10 % chance) as most fans are okay giving him another year with the youth and injuries.
However, the new AD isn't a fan, paid big bucks to make the tough calls, and has already pulled the trigger once regarding basketball.
I for one am glad he appears more serious about the basketball program, and for that reason, would not at all be disappointed if this is Coach Brownell's last game as head coach.
Why:
-no excitement from fans -mediocre recruiting -hard to watch style of play -dry personality as a coach -still miss FT's -still lose close games -no post season play 2nd year straight -imbalanced roster next year with no bigs -really bad losses (?coastal ? senior night ? 10 point halves) -one win since Jan 29th???
C'mon man.
We need a new start.
Agree that the facilities need an upgrade, but that and that alone will not make up for the above deficiencies.
May be a nice guy but that shouldn't be enough to be a HC in the ACC.
Just my opinion.

Wait, what, we would only have to roll the dice on another mid-major coach. No thanks, I'll give BB another year or two to try and develop his program.

How many people said this about Coach K after his 3rd year?
Mar 14, 2013, 3:10 PM
|
|
Look up the Duke numbers from his first 3 years (keeping in mind that the ACC was an 8-team league at the time), look up the success they had prior to that.
I hate Duke and Coach K, but Brownell deserves at least the same chance here at a school with almost no basketball tradition that K got at a school with as much winning tradition as Duke has.

We don't want to get the rep that we had with Football. You have to give a coach at least 4 years to turn it around.
If we fire Brownell after year 3, it will make it even harder to hire someone.
My 2 cents, there is a 0.000001% chance he will be fired soon. Unless he pulls a Coach Knight on Milton tonight!

1. He got hired by a guy who isn't here anymore 2. He's seen football have millions and millions of dollars spent on it...pretty much zilch since he started here 3. He's seen fan support fall off even during his brief time here. 4. He's seen the type of competition he's facing and the players he can recruit here. 5. He gets offered a job in the A-10 or something similar he would have to think about it.

Not to be overly harsh about my alma mater, but unfortunately BB already has a "mid-major" job ... his problem (like every other Clemson hoops HC for that matter) is that he's having to compete in arguably the premier conference in the entire country.

Brad deserves at least 2 more years. The so called "senior leaders" aren't his recruits, and with no juniors the gap from leaders to youngens is huge. The biggest concern is the sophomores really stepping up next year, and becoming new leaders. He's recruited some good players, and we lost 4-5 ACC games within 2-8 points. We have never shot free throws well, so don't blame that on him either. I like his coaching ability, he just didnt have many players with much experience this year.

but he deserves another year.
Im just not a fan of him though. All of the reason you listed are valid.
We are worse as a program now than when he took over and I do not see how we can be better next season. Will have absolutely no inside game and adding ND, Syracuse and Pitt next year will only push us further down in the standings. He needs to breathe some life into the program.
Since I live in KY, the Clemson bball situation feels similar to KY football. Many people cried for another year for Joker and that he suffered from a young team and injuries, but that wasn't enough to save him. The AD, Mitch Barnhart, realized the future was dim despite the current situation and made a bold move.
The end result was they ended up with a competitive experience assistant who hired a great staff and is going head to head with the big boys in recruiting. They have already gotten money for facility improvements, have increased tickets sales and distributed over 33,000 tickets to the spring game.
Clemson basketball needs the same jolt of excitement in the program. I just don't see Brownell getting it done.
It'll be next season though...its his do or die year and he knows it.

Have you watched any ACC games this year? Most teams are in the middle 50s to low 60s per game. It aint just Clemson that is slowing it down and fighting inside.
The ACC has turned into a combination of what the Big East defense back when they gave them 6 fouls plus a Wisconsin offense.
