Wow, front page of USA Today sports section...

Big Time disrespect to Clemson to fill the future narrative. Clemson will have to go undefeated in order to qualify for the CFP this year im afraid. Because when they run this type of story/narrative they're setting the course for the committee to read and follow. Article itself asks valid questions though. Hope our Tigers will answer.

After last season, hard to argue about it. If they want to

change the narrative, they need to crank it up and stay consistent.

We've thought that most years though

I wouldn't call it disrespect.....

Sep 22, 2022, 2:14 PM

pretty spot on.

It's no coincidence that our offensive struggles last year coincided with our first 3 loss regular season in seven years.

We'll see if they can catch some traction this year, but it feels eerily similar of last year from an offensive perspective. Granted, we've had better QB play this year, but WRs, Oline, playcalling have been at best "slightly better" than last year.

Re: I wouldn't call it disrespect.....

Sep 22, 2022, 2:25 PM

There was a lot of grumbling about the first offensive play call of every game last year. I like the way that was changed up last Saturday night.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yeah, i was cautiously optimistic after that play call......

Yea , not winning by enough.

It's not disrespect. Respect has to be earned. We had it,

Sep 22, 2022, 2:28 PM

but lost it last year. Hopefully, The Tigers will regain it this year.

Unless I read the article wrong -

Sep 22, 2022, 2:38 PM

and I'm not going to reread to find out (The first time through was moments wasted from my life), it looks like this writer thought Brandon Streeter was our OC for last season.

Lazy journalism

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think that's true. I understand why you would think that

Sep 22, 2022, 2:51 PM

"With Streeter calling plays, this year’s offense looked better in the opening stretch of last season."

I think there's a typo in that sentence, perhaps a word missing. But a couple paragraphs before that he writes:

"Scott left for South Florida after the 2019 season. Elliott took over at Virginia after last season."

I don't see how you can call this "disrespect". Look at our offensive stats from last year, 9th overall in the conference: https://theacc.com/stats.aspx?path=football&year=2021

This year, we're ranked 3rd through 3 games........so I can see your point to some degree.

Screw Calford.

What category are we even 3rd in?

Sep 22, 2022, 3:02 PM

We are lower than that in yards per play and such.

Disrespect in terms of knocking Clemson down and out of the

CFP discussion. In terms of the CFP in years past we have gotten beat, sometimes by way inferior teams, and remained solid in the CFP discussion even with a really bad loss. This article ads to a national sentiment that basically says that Clemson; you have absolutely no wiggle room when it comes qualifying this time around. And this isn't the first time i've seen this type article or discussion on sports shows. ITs a valid take i'll admit right along with you. But hope we all understand that if we're sitting at the end of the year with a similar record to another power 5 team for that final spot we won't get that benefit of the doubt.

I saw no disrespect in the article. Pretty accurate I'd say.

Reality hurts.
This has been a problem that started in 2019/20 after Jeff Scott left before the LSU game.

Either Clemson family wakes up ... or Georgia becomes the regions #1 team for the next decade.

The time is now. And we won't get a second chance.

Lifelong tiger fan, I have to agree. If the offense doesn’t continue to improve and get more of a quick strike ability they are not elite.

So why doesn’t the hero, who wrote this article, mention yards per play, etc., but he neglected to report points per game? However, he does mention points per game from last year at 26.3. Why doesn’t he mention that Clemson is averaging 41 points per game so far this season? Perhaps, as others suggest, it doesn’t fit the narrative? Another reason those yards per play/yards per game are lower is the amount of short fields Clemson has had. Against GA Tech, there were two punt blocks, and against LA Tech, wasn’t there a turnover on downs in LA Tech territory? Didn’t they also fumble or something late in the game that led to the last Clemson score? These jokers watch one half of a game, listen to other talking heads, and then they make their decrees. What a joke. If I told any one of them, at the beginning of this season, that after three “cupcakes,” as these writers appear to regard them, Clemson would be 3-0 and averaging 41 points per contest, and 425 yards per game, would they be so dismissive of Clemson and it’s “stale” offense? Keep in mind that the assumption of the lower yard totals could be explained about implementing second-fourth team offense and defense and being more conservative in play calling. Would they have assumed what this guy is trying to sell? I don’t think so.

There’s nothing stale about Clemson’s offense. I continue to believe that the decreased “big play” production on offense has stemmed mostly from greatly reduced big play making capacity in the WR corp. It has nothing to do with scheme. Poor o-line/QB/WR play and enough injuries to last three seasons are what doomed the offense in 2021. But, I saw some very encouraging things last Saturday, though, from the WR group. If these freshmen play as good as they say, I think these pundits will suddenly be amazed at how Clemson’s offense really isn’t stale after all.

Good points, Chief.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yards per play and similar metrics are actually

Sep 22, 2022, 3:45 PM [ in reply to Re: Wow, front page of USA Today sports section... ]

a MUCH better predictor of future offensive success than points per game. There are many factors that go into scoring points that actually have nothing to do with the offense.

For example: blocking a GT punt, recovering at the 5, and then needing 4 downs to punch the ball into the EZ is not good offense. The special teams play created those 7 pts.

We've scored 38 points from very short fields this year. 2 blocked punts, 2 4th down stops deep in opponents territory, and 1 INT and 1 fumble by LT deep in their own half.

Now those points obviously count, and we did convert 5/6 into TDs which is good, but getting points in that fashion isn't as good of an indicator of good offense as being able to consistently drive the ball 75 yards down the field.

One of those leaves you asking the question: "Can this team consistently move the ball and score points without the benefit of short fields?"

I don't think that question has been answered yet for this Clemson offense.

Just setting the narrative because they believe perception is reality in this click bait world. No one looks into the numbers or gives them out as long as they're not needed for their ultimate goal.

We’ll have to go undefeated for a chance at the CFP. Everyone has wished BV well and rightly so. However, let’s suppose OK goes undefeated and beats Texas handily. Also, at the same time, what if the real USC (and media darling) goes undefeated as well? Hopefully Bama will lose a game before the Dawgs beat them in the SEC title game. If not, and we have seen this before - Georgia gets the top spot as SEC Champ. Since playing in the almighty tough SEC, Bama would get a spot as a one loss runner up. The BIG champ, probably OSU or Michigan (especially if undefeated) would lock up the 3rd spot.. If the above holds true, unlike years past, an undefeated USC, OK and Clemson would be vying for the last spot. There would be no guarantee.

Hopefully, USC and OK will lose at least once and we go undefeated - we would then assuredly get in. I do not trust the media or voters to “lock us in” if Clemson, USC and OK all go undefeated. Bama losing one game before the Dawgs beat them also helps our chances.

Still a long way to go - Go Tigers!!!

I agree that we could be in trouble if there are 3 undefeated conference champs after the big 10 and sec 1 loss champs, but that has never happened before and won’t happen this year either. OU will drop one, I think USC will as well. We need to just make sure we don’t.

They have to prove them wrong on the field--either by looking great, or staying undefeated...or both.
