Lessons from the Fiesta Bowl.

Dec 29, 2019, 1:31 PM

Officiating good or bad does not usually lose football games. I would remind OSU that the first call reviewed by the officials was correctly overturned and went their way. It gave them first and goal at the five from which they failed to reach the end zone. Seven there instead of three and the final score is a two point Clemson win. The second reviewed call took away an OSU touchdown. However, the call was clearly correct. Dobbins makes the play and the final score is a two-point OSU win. The reviewed targeting call again cannot be argued. It was clearly targeting. It was a player mistake not an official's mistake. That was a third down play. Shaun Wade does not target Trevor, OSU gets the ball back. A Clemson TD resulted from that drive. A seven point swing. The roughing the kicker personal foul, again a correct call allowed Clemson to keep possession. We scored a TD on that drive, another seven point swing. Dobbins also dropped a screen pass that would likely have resulted in a TD. Another four point swing. These are plays made or not made by players not officials. I would also point out we dropped a sure pick six. Plays made or not made make one call, the overturn of the scoop and score, seem huge. However, if OSU makes first half plays, that call may not have meant much at all. So the lesson, when you have a chance to put a great team away, do it, or you will likely be looking at what might have been later.

Congrats OSU, you played great, had us on the ropes, could have put us away but didn't. That is on you not the officials. Don't cheapen what was a great game by blaming officials for your own failure to make critical plays.

And let's not forget that Clemson didn't play to their potential in the first quarter and the Buckeyes took advantage.

Credit to the Bucknuts - Ohio State came out like 'Bama did a couple of years ago. The D was playing lights out and their O was doing whatever they wanted except scoring in the redzone. They ALMOST flat out overwhelmed Clemson in the first quarter in a half to where the game was looking like remnants of the ole blowouts any Clemson fan of the 2010s can remember (West Virginia 2012, FSU 2013, 'Bama 2018).

Clemson perceived and battled back like a warrior once TLAW got knocked out. One of the more inspiring performances I've seen from a Clemson player (like Watson against 'Bama for the title win).

Honestly, one of the sweetest wins I've witnessed!

I just hope we don't do the same against LSU in the first quarter and a half because that might not be something we can come back against.

In reality, if anything happens differently at most any point in a game, like a fork in the road, nothing is the same after that.

You cannot think, "if we had made that earlier field goal, everything would be the same...............except we would have 3 more points".

spot on

Dec 29, 2019, 2:38 PM

There were also half a dozen holding calls That were not made against OSU that would’ve extended our drives. Blaming officials for a loss is loser talk

Agree100% that blaming officials is loser talk. Which is why people still complaining about the Pitt game is annoying.

I kinda agree (ok mostly). I would also say that blaming the refs, in particular the replay booth is absurd. They have more time and angles to get a call correct. None of the booth's decisions were "wrong" unlike a few on the field. The reversed fumble might be the the "best case" for OSU's complaints on one call... but that is a very long shot (and hey, they are not complaining about the missed PI on that play either... nice hand wrapped around ross). The booth got it right. Granted, we are used to circus catches but the ball was moving away from ross's body when trying to bring it in and before the swipe and in real time, it was clearly a drop... but rather than focusing on the db disrupting the pass, the blame the refs.

but I wanted add a few things...

when you have a lead and it is looking like a "blowout" aka 16-0 and then a call does not you way resulting in a team starting a comeback: you blame the refs. That was about a textbook targeting call that the on-field refs missed and Clemson folk would have a legitimate gripe otherwise.

when you had a rout disappear and are now trailing, taking points away from a reversed turnover is "the refs fault".

Worse, did OSU punch it in after the 4th and 19? nope. Interception.

Basically, the OSU complaint was that their team was beginning to drown and looking to blame someone else.

Finally, a lot of the "let them play" calls went OSU's way. They were getting the "benefit of the doubt" and putting the burden on the replay booth to overturn. Thus what can OSU complain about as they were getting the calls. Thank goodness for replay.

Good post! I've watched the SEC refs for just about all year and in my opinion they are BAD. However, they seem to get the calls they make right, but they miss a bunch of obvious fouls ..... i.e. like OSU guy slinging his elbow into Trevor's lower leg after he had already thrown the ball, or Okudah grabbing receivers jerseys. I am sure we had some that were not called either, as it was not one sided. I even had to agree that they missed several obvious calls against Florida in the Coot - UF game.

How can any rational person think that play was not targeting when the defender led with his helmet?

I posted on some other topic boards earlier about the targeting call - not all of the calls - and then realized however I might respond it would sound like sour grapes and do not want my comments to sully a great game.

So I Give you the following -

1) That was one heck of a game.

2) Anyone who disrespected what the Tigers have accomplished doesn’t know how schedules are made up. Clemson played their schedule and did what good teams do. WIN

3) Very rarely do you see two teams whose players gave their all - physically and mentally. Again - one heck of a game

4) Did not realize TL could eat up yardage like that.

5) Buckeyes would have won if they stop a 94 yard drive at the end. They did not. Could have won it on their final drive. They did not.

So - Most importantly - Congratulations to the Tigers and their fans - Good luck in the NCG.

Unfortunately we will likely see you again next year.

You have a great team with great athletes. Looking at your recruiting class, no reason to believe you will not be a top four team next year.
