Unfortunately the portal is real. It's going to be more important than recruiting.

For every player you lose there's one just as good or better you can get. If these players want to transfer then embrace it and go replace them with a better player. Dabo will adjust.

I would not go that far. Starters don't transfer, It's mostly guys who are not playing or playing very little, or in the coach's cross hairs. I think the portal can be valuable for maintaining a level of depth, but you are not going to find many 4 or 5 stars in there.

Many if not most will come with issues or “baggage” - didn’t live up to their potential, couldn’t follow team rules, more about themselves than team, the game moved to fast for them or overwhelmed them or inclined to run from adversity.
Certainly there will be some good kids in the portal but they will be the minority.

solution for players who think they should be starting at their current school. Most portal transfers will find themselves with "some" playing time at the transfer school, but it would seem to me that injuries would be more likely reason to transfer.

My guess is that we'll soon see stories of kids that entered the portal and never found a new home. Somehow that's going to be the NCAA's fault.

Coaches could kill the portal tomorrow. All they have to do is as a coaches group agree that they will not take anyone from the portal. They will only take and play those players they recruit. Then they would need to solve the player decommitting from a team. I am convinced that as a group coaches could solve it.

NOT starters. Their hope is to transfer via the portal so they can start at another school.
Starters at Clemson or other schools would not need the transfer portal because they are already a starter or a heavily used 2nd team player.

With over 2100 and counting in the portal, every FBS team could get 15-20 each.

use the transfer portal unless you have lost players, i.e. major injuries.
Schools are not going to carry 15-20 "extra" players from the transfer portal. Most of these players would be sitting on the bench.

i think the majority are folks who are good enough to start but at their current school they are just a victim to the depth chart..see chez mellusi ...lit it up at wisconsin this year but would have barely sniffed the field at clemson this year

Yeah, but Lyn J, Ladson, Puma, Tchio, Charleston, etc……those are quality players that just walked out the door. Are the 10 or so incoming recruits that are still committed going to replace that kind of depth?

Recruiting is more important now than ever ever, because of the portal.

Mostly third team players from teams we dominate or would not even think of recruiting. Sure, there are a few, but not many. Warm bodies , perhaps.
