Unemployment and Stimulus

Feb 5, 2021, 5:05 PM

So the unemployment rate is around 6.3%. As a high-tech firm hiring mainly engineers and computer science types, we cannot find enough people to fill vacancies. It's been like this a while.

We had 5+ years of worse unemployment between 2009 and 2014. The stock markets are at all-time highs. Why are we taxing our grandkid’s future with another trillion or two of unnecessary spending?

Data/plot from data.bls.gov (bureau of labor statistics).

We learned the last time around it is cheaper, in the long run, to keep printing money to prop up the economy than it is to let it fail and rebuild it. Not sure how much longer we can keep it up. A lot of these jobs will not come back.

I know that 40 years of cutting subsidies for higher education hardly helps, and our brightest minds go into finance so they can figure out ways to skim off the top and become multi-millionaires. Maybe if we cut off the spigot they will pursue careers in Computer science instead.

Those guys will be revered as highly as Wall Street traders in the late 1920's.

You know this doesn't last.

I'm just hoping it can be unwound, over decades, like Japan did when their bubble burst. That sucks, but they never collapsed. And they're still in debt to their eyeballs though, but it's better than it was. All I know is inflation will never be allowed. Period. As such, goods wil still be imported from wherever we can find cheap labor, and salaries will stay stagnant. Prices will remain low. Trade deficit will stay high. Illegal immigration will continue unabated.

If we shut off "free" trade, and made our own crap, we'd get inflation. If we build our own houses, inflation. If we pick our own crops, inflation. $15/hr minimum wage...inflation. And inflation will spell the difference between a collapse and a lost decade. The more debt we have, the lower that collapse bar goes. I'm figuring about 8% these days. 5% would be a depression. 8-10% and we collapse. That used to be 10-15%.

We sure did fix Jimmy Carter's inflation huh? We issued debt, fixed it, and kept going and going and going and going and...

Is that why we tax labor more heavily than investment?

Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian built this great country.
