Trustees approve tearing down Clemson House

Jul 15, 2016, 8:58 AM

http://www.thestate.com/news/state/south-carolina/article89708667.html

One of the coolest places in Clemson. I did a project on the Clemson House for a senior level historic preservation class (somehow got it counted as a senior level geography credit) and the things I learned were fascinating. I would love to tour the President's Penthouse at the top before it came down. I hate they have to do away with it but I understand with it being nearly a million dollars to run it per year.

So many memories I had there as a student.

I will miss it.

area and most big events/parties were there. They had a great Sunday buffet late in the afternoon. The site is really important in that it is as high or higher than Tillman Hall. I hope something really special can be put there. It would be a great place for an alumni/development/visitor's center like they've just built in Columbia.

I used to love climbing out of my window onto the roof and cooking out.

Have some great memories there.

Used to do that with friends who lived there as well. One day someone called the cops on us...they came and joined us for some venison burgers

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm heartbroken that they're tearing it down

Jul 15, 2016, 10:06 AM

but progress and time march on. Even if they fixed it up, it would be considered sub-standard student housing by today's measure. I hope they will keep it long enough to give penthouse tours in the fall, that is my greatest regret--lived there 3 years and never managed to sneak up there, though I had many chances.

Lived there first two years of college in the late 80's

and I must admit sneaking up to the penthouse several times. Usually on Sunday morning following a big shindig Saturday night before the staff turned the 7th floor lock in the elevator back to the lock position. Pretty awesome view of campus overlooking Bowman/Tillman with DV in the background. Took my 35 mm camera with me once and got some great pics. Also remember getting onto the elevator once with Danny Ford when he was headed up to a reception. Really disappointed to see approval to tear it down.

Does anyone know when the last permanent resident left?

Jul 15, 2016, 10:49 AM

Many may remember Clemson House having a few permanent residents, I believe who were living there when the University bought the hotel and they were grandfathered in for as long as they lived or until they decided to move on. I remember a home-bound elderly lady who lived next door to us on the South end of the 4th floor during the 88/89 school year.

There were still a half-dozen or so back in 1993-94, my last year there. I believe the famous professor who lived there for decades (whose name slips my memory) was the last one.

but I never got up the nerve to hit "8" and check out the penthouse. I really should have.

And used to play under the water tower in the back in the summer when it would drip.
While I will miss it, I never really cared for its looks and expect new construction more fitting with Clemson's other buildings.

A few questions

Jul 15, 2016, 10:12 AM

1) Does the fact that Clemson House is being torn down affect the design for the new business building? In the initial rendering it looks like the new building will be situated on the hill in front of Clemson House instead of on the top (see below).

2) How bad is the traffic going to be and what will the parking situation be? The long crosswalk to get across 93 to Clemson House usually caused back-ups. Add in the fact that we will have a business building, new bridge dorms, and the continued growth of downtown and I could see making/traffic being a nightmare.

3) How big is Clemson going to get and is this what's best for the university?

a partial answer to #3

Jul 15, 2016, 11:05 AM

there are C.U. produced docs out there that specifically talk about growing the undergrad student population to 25,000 within a few years... all the new student housing construction is based on that planned growth

and the talk is about taking it to 30,000 eventually

as for #2 - the Bridge folks, if they're crossing 93, will mostly be closer to the President's House/Cherry Road

with no students living in Clemson House, crosswalk traffic might just drop right there at Bowman/Parkway/Calhoun

SCDOT either has, or is in process, of deeding Hwy 93

Jul 15, 2016, 1:15 PM [ in reply to A few questions ]

to the University, so it will control the road from Esso to the 76 bridge. Also Perimeter Road will be Clemson's, not a state road any more.

I look for 93 from TD's to the President's house to eventually become a campus road with a 15mph speed limit, possibly down to 2 lanes. I think they really want to get heavy traffic off of that road. It's dangerous now, much less when 2000 more students need to cross it every day once Douthit and the Business school opens.

Re: Trustees approve tearing down Clemson House

Jul 15, 2016, 11:31 AM

I stayed in two different rooms there in the summer of 1979. If my memory serves me correctly, one was a very large 2 bedroom suite with one bathroom, the other was more like a regular dorm room, only larger.

As a student in the early 80's, we would eat there every couple of months. It seemed the food served there was always "a cut above" that served in Harcombe!

A food drop from C.A.R.E. would be ...

... a cut above Harcombe.

But agreed, eating at the Clemson House was a "special" dinner reserved for treating yourself or you just couldn't bring yourself to go to Harcombe that evening.

It was a dorm room for my wife when she was a freshman. Best memory was going back to the house after a football game and riding the elevator up to her floor with none other then Bob Hope and his wife.
