Could KB have used his redshirt, but remain on the team this season to practice and be a part of the leadership for the team? Probably not an option now that he’s run his mouth off like this, but does anyone know how that works?

yes he could have by not playing in any remaining games. I think Dabo even said when he announced this the other day he would have allowed that. Once he has decided to leave then its best for all to move along.
