What happened to Miami? Are they allergic to the ACC?

Oct 24, 2014, 10:21 AM

When the ACC expanded to include Miami it looked like a major upgrade. If things had continued the way they were the ACC would have been the premier football conference in the country. But something very, very odd happened.

In 2004 when Miami joined the ACC, the Hurricanes had been to FOUR CONSECUTIVE BCS bowls. Their record in that span was 36-4. That's right, I said 36-4. They played in TWO national championship games and won one in that 4 year span. In the previous 2 decades they had 5 National Titles and 9 Conference championships. And then... they join the ACC

Immediately they drop to 9-3 and 9-3 and 7-6 and 5-7 over the next 4 years. Since then the most wins they can muster is 9. The are exactly like Clemson in the 90's at this point. Whaaa happened?!

I've been waiting in vain for Miami to return to their old ways and lift up the ACC again. The ACC needs that Miami swag to be on par with the SEC, Big 12 and the Pac 12.

Clemson has nearly completely woken up from our 20 year slumber. Miami needs to do the same.

They stopped cheating (as much). Then a few years later it all came out.

UNC cheated but they still sucked. So it's not just that.***

UNC's cheating was mostly for Bball. And yes it did work.

There's something in these hills.

Well I wish they would go back to being dirty. It was fun.

I get the sense...

Oct 24, 2014, 10:50 AM

No one really cares about College football down there.
Too many other distractions.

I remember a few years back, Clemson being ranked in the top #7 nationally.
And we headed down there for a game. From the TV stand point, it looked like
the stadium was 65% empty...just a shame.

Still though, I wouldn't trade them....Boston College, on the other hand- yes.

Thought they had better attendance when they were good

Oct 24, 2014, 11:49 AM

It looks like they averaged 15- 20,000 more than they do now (45,000), but even then, they weren't getting close to filling up a stadium that could hold 70 or 80,000. Now that they've moved to Sun Life, the stadium is smaller, but their crowds are smaller, too.

he has consistently done the least with the most in this conference coming on 5 years.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Really? He's been on probation almost the entire time

Oct 24, 2014, 11:55 AM

He also managed to win 9 games last year. While they've been able to recruit OK, the probation made it a lot harder for them to land the kind of classes they used to under Shannon and Coker. So Golden has done a lot better with less than Shannon did with a bunch of stud athletes.

If you want to look at somebody who did less with more, look at Shannon. His teams were full of extremely heralded guys, but the best he could do was 9-4.

In what universe have they had the most in the last 5 years?***

The Butch Davis era players were all gone.....

Oct 24, 2014, 10:54 AM

by the time they got to the ACC, and they couldn't get away with the Butch Davis stuff by 2004. I think it would be hard for Miami to get back to where they were. The only eras Miami has been successful has been times when they were basically breaking every known rule or law known to man, I don't think they can get away with that anymore. The University wants to stay away from that image. The culture in the city of Miami has changed now too. They just do not care about Miami Hurricane football in Miami.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They weren't particularly dirty in the early 2000s

Oct 24, 2014, 11:51 AM

And they were still pretty good in the mid- 2000s. They were always in the top 10 in recruiting under Larry Coker, and they never should've fired him for posting records that are much more normal for them now. I think hiring Randy Shannon was their undoing, and they're only starting to dig out from the load of crap he put them under.

Doesn't help that VT has fallen off, too

Oct 24, 2014, 11:42 AM

Strange that both of these teams are hitting tough times at the same time that GT and UVa are having some of their worst years in a while, too.

Re: What happened to Miami? Are they allergic to the ACC?

Oct 24, 2014, 1:41 PM

Forget about that ever happening..

Miami will never be the Miami of old again and it has nothing to do with them being in the ACC.

Most folks aren’t aware that UM is a relatively small private school with an enrollment of only around 11,000. They also have a pretty high academic reputation as well, and the higher-ups that turned their eyes away from all the cheating in the past have had enough of it. It’s almost reached the point that if another incident occurs they would likely disband the program all together. You can see this in their unwillingness to put any money towards much needed facility upgrades. The longer this goes on, the further UM will fall behind. I just don’t see them ever being much better than what they are now.

Remember the All Cane Conference smack talk?

Oct 24, 2014, 2:53 PM

How did that work out for ya? Not one appearance in the championship game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

UNCheat conveyed to them how things are done in the ACC

Oct 24, 2014, 3:17 PM

..... let them know that this is a basketball conference in which you don't necessarily have to be that good in basketball. Just don't be good enough in anything else to the point that might diminish from the notion that this is a ,...BASKETBALL CONFERENCE!
