Report: UNC receives notice of allegations from NCAA
Posted by Kevin McGuire on May 22, 2015, 11:52 AM EDT
Tommy Hibbard

The University of North Carolina has received a Notice of Allegations letter from the NCAA offices, but the school will not release the details of the investigation until a later date. When that date will be is not yet known. Inside Carolina reports UNC may make a formal announcement later today regarding the arrival of the NCAA’s notice of allegations.

The NCAA reopened an investigation at Chapel Hill last June to follow-up on some new information shed regarding academic irregularities on the campus involving student-athletes. The basis for reopening the investigation was the belief those who previously did not help with the NCAA’s original investigation in 2011 would be more willing to provide details and information.

In October a new report from former U.S. Justice Department official Kenneth Wainstein suggested the academic scandal at UNC was more widespread than initially thought. His report’s findings said more than 3,1000 students enrolled in classes they did not have to show up for to receive credit over decades. Half of those students were also UNC athletes according to the report.

How much more in-depth the NCAA investigation managed to dig remains to be seen, but it would seem there was reason to suggest it was able to come up with enough new information to sanction UNC once again to some extent. We will just have to wait to find out just what the new penalties may be for the Tar Heels and how it may or may not impact football.

Whatever they get; the ACC needs to add another year or two, like they did to us.

They are fortunate they don't have any memorabilia that

was sold, or there could be serious consequences. It's a joke this has gone on this long, and what was going on there is far worse than one student-athlete selling a few things or talking to an agent. I want diplomas recalled.

fraud. This is THE reason NCAA rules exist, to prevent and punish this very kind of thing.

Make Swofford stand outside the NCAA Headquarters daily for 8 hours each time and have a whip there for anyone to hit his sorry #### at least one time as they pass by. Also make him apologize to each person that passes by and don't give him any rain gear or anything to protect him from the elements. Cruel yes, but satisfying.

The NCAA is up against the wall on this one

May 22, 2015, 7:21 PM

Here is a case of horrific lack of institutional control. The school set up a phony major with no real requirements for learning. Advisers of the athletic department put student athletes into this program to keep players academically eligible. Graduate programs accepted under-qualified applicants at the request of the athletic department to get extra years of eligibility out of players. And who knows what else.

Here's the real kick in the nads - it wasn't the NCAA that cracked this case but rather a tenacious group of fans from NCSU assisted by the local newspaper. The public didn't take ex-players serious in their accounts, calling players like McCants "crazy" or "agenda driven". Sadly UNC explained his accusations away without any investigation. As more information became available, the university had to back peddle and look into the situation. By then their credibility was lost to most who saw a program unwilling to acknowledge what was really going on. Here we are today with several prominent members of the university fired or resigned due to the scandal. It's clear as day that guilt exudes from Chapel Hill.

So what will the NCAA do? It is obvious that they are incapable of policing athletic programs effectively and after years of leniency for infractions (ahem...Miami) it is almost to the point where it pays to cheat. So come down hard on UNC and hope that scares the rest of the schools straight, right? Well, the NCAA's biggest fear is losing the power 5 all together. All this coddling might just be their attempt to keep their golden geese from bolting for a no-holds-barred power 5 football league. After all, the NCAA is in business to make money really. Aren't they?

Pretty much on point NutCutter. As much as I hate to see this happen to UNC, punishment needs to be extremely harsh for anyone involved! I agree with making an example for sure. I do that with my own kids to ensure that an action isn't repeated, and siblings take note. Whatever punishment is recommended, UNC needs to self-impose extra to make a statement on behalf of all UNC alum who are just mad as hell!

I studied engineering at Clemson and definitely NOT African American studies at UNC! Just saying....
