UNC = A National Disgrace

Oct 23, 2014, 11:04 AM

It's pretty easy to understand how such an established university, one that seems all to quick to point out the specs in other's eyes, could have cheated 3,000+ students through school now for 20 years unchecked. The institution has maintained a total lack of control over themselves while at the same time standing on their own soapbox chastising others for much lesser transgressions. The hypocrisy of UNC, that's now opened for all the world to see, has reached an unprecedented level, one never before reached throughout the history of academia. How is this easy to understand?

Because UNC has enjoyed to role of the "untouchable" for decades. Media (made up of many UNC journalist) has been quick to look the other way, the ACC (always under Tarheel "strongarm" influence) has been quick to look the other way. The NCAA picked UNC to be the "golden child" who can do no wrong,...they too have chosen to look the other way. With no system of checks and balances therefore in place, UNC has had free reign to not only behave foolishly, recklessly, and ultimately STUPIDLY, but at the same time, and whenever it suits them, self righteously point out the errors in other institutions.

The question now is,... Will the media, the ACC, and the NCAA still insist that the here-to-fore unstained Carolina Blue is to continue to be deemed "unstained"? That trio of UNC protectors is about to lose what little credibility they may have had. Will they do the right thing and establish what should have been established long ago? Will UNC be finally brought under the same control and oversight that has been the case with other institutions? I'll not hold my breath, but I am hoping that there may be some there that still have enough integrity to at least desire to be considered credible.

the schools in the country.

It's also happened at Stanford and Michigan, which are also supposed to be some of the top academic universities among sports powers.

UNC and any other school participating in this kind of fraud is doing a great disservice to their student athletes. I hope the NCAA will make an example out of UNC and punish them hard, but I doubt they get more than a slap on the wrist.

The report makes it clear that Dean Smith was pretty much the worst of the bunch. From page 72 of the report:

"Matt Doherty is a former Tar Heel player who went on to coach at the University of Notre
Dame before being recruited to Chapel Hill as head coach in 2000. Doherty explained that upon
assuming the coaching position, he inherited the academic support system developed by prior
Coaches Dean Smith and Bill Guthridge. That system had academic oversight being handled by
McSwain, the counselor with close ties to Debby Crowder. While he felt free to make significant
changes to the rest of the team’s coaching and support staff, Doherty was told by Smith and
Guthridge, who both had a continued presence on campus, that he should not change the academic
support system. As a result, the McSwain-Crowder pipeline continued to operate, and there were 42
enrollments of men’s basketball players in paper classes during Doherty’s tenure."

With Williams being an assistant to Dean, and them being very close, it's obvious Roy knew as well. It will be interesting to see what is done, but the NCAA is so inconsistent that it's impossible to tell what, if anything, they'll do to punish Carolina.

...there are too many crows to eat, that would effectively render the crow and endangered species.

The pundits will have to ignore this UNC report, because they risk too much exposure for their own unjustified, unwarranted, and disgraceful sychofantic idolotry of UNC-CH.

Swofford has the most penance to pay for, but that will need to be resolved in the afterlife, with either Saint Peter or red version of the Duke mascot.
