Why have we played the coots away so much

Nov 25, 2022, 8:23 PM

I saw an article on tiger net that said clemson was 19-10 at home against the coots but 53-32 away. Why have we played away so much more?

OVERALL: Clemson leads series, 72-42-4
HOME: Clemson leads series, 19-10-1
ROAD: Clemson leads series, 53-32-3

Game was originally played in October as part of the state fair festivities. "Big Thursday". Finally, Coach Howard said you can play at Clemson every other year, or you won't get to play it at all. First year at Clemson was 1960. It wasn't the last game of the year, but it was there within a few years.

Umm Coach Howard was the most unpopular man in South Carolina for ending Big Thursday!

Especially among Clemson fans! Gotta remember Clemson was an agricultural school and the farmers and fans looked forward to the Big Thursday game and attending the State Fair - a kinda twofer!
I lived in Columbia until 1962 (sixth grade) and my uncle (Clemson 1915) was Richland Country Extension Agent and ran the Agricultural Division at the fair and his wife was Chair of the Fair’s Women’s Division for over 30 years! Great childhood memories of the fair - Fiske French and my first corn dogs.

I understand that Coach Howard asked SCar to
share ticket, program, or concession revenues with Clemson and when they said “no” is when he said then it’s “hone n home” time. So, as even Clemson fans loved the game and the State Fair in Columbia, Coach Howard got his fair share of heat from Clemson fans for ending Big Thursday!

One of my favorites from Coach Howard: when asked why he was retiring, he replied it was due to illness. “Yeah,” he drawled, “ both the Board and Alumni are sick of me!”

Columbia. I live an hour away from Willie B, and I never remember any Clemson fan complaining about it going to home and home!

Amazing to me we're only 19-10 at home...

...let's make it 20-10 tomorrow!

Some call it charity, some call it pity……but it’s really cuz we just enjoy going over to their house and ragdolling them all over their own yard.

If you think that is bad, take a look at the Clemson-Tech rivalry. 22 have been played at Clemson, one in Greenville, 63 in Atlanta, one in Augusta and one in Tampa. The big city boys didn't want to play the hicks on our their field. Interestingly, since it became home and home in 1982, we are 24-16 against the Jackets.

Where in Greenville would we have played GT? Which stadium?
