UDPs need not enter (tipping question)

Apr 28, 2021, 8:10 AM

Definitely regulars at a local restaurant

They hook me up with a free beer from time to time while I wait on my to go food but most of the time I pay

The other night I was hooked up with a beer and then a half pour because not enough time to drink a whole before dood was done. True regular status right there and she made my Sammy a “build your own” rather than the normal thus saving me a couple of bucks

So it also happened to be the time that I got my $10 off from loyalty card

The bill should have been $35-ish two meals and a beer

Deducting the Sammy, the beer and the $10 left me with a bill that was substantially less than what it should have been

Knowing that there is no tip pool and your tip goes straight this server how would you tip?

1. Tip accordingly to bill you received
2. Tip better on the bill received due to the nice service
3. Tip as though you had gotten the true bill
4. Tip as though you are a UDP and leave 10% after talking to a manager

At the bar, I tip no less that $20

Apr 28, 2021, 8:12 AM

no matter the tab. Its a small town and they all know I do this. At dinner, if they show a great wine, my wife gets drunk and they have my tequila on hand, I will give $100 easily.

I am a HUGE tipper. I will forego things in life to give some kindness back to someone that is bringing me food and drinks. Its that simple when you think about it.

Waiter..no problem....goes to kitchen, comes back...here you go

I recall once tipping zero

Apr 28, 2021, 8:16 AM [ in reply to 20% on the true bill ]

Well, it was because the waitress quit after taking our order. When we complained to the manager after waiting forever and not seeing our waitress, he brought out the food himself and apologized. Free meal, and since the manager brought the food out and they forgot to even think "Hey, this order sitting ready for 30 minutes may have been a table of the waitress who just walked out the door", I didn't leave a tip, as there was no charge. For anything.

Anyway, my only zero tip that I can recall.

Apr 28, 2021, 8:16 AM

you always tip based on bill before any discounts The service wasn't any less than if you had paid full price.

This is only assuming you want to continue getting most favored customer status. Otherwise you might be moved to the give this guy the special sauce category.

I'm not a real % kind of tipper, start there as a guide but I always get better service at the $8-9 meat and 3 type place where they call you hun than the $24.95 snooty patooty places and I don't see why Gunter should get a better tip than Betty just because they have cloth napkins.

Apr 28, 2021, 8:20 AM

The "20% on the normal bill" isn't a bad way to go, but I usually look at it like I'm playing with house money when they give me free stuff. (not talking about the coupon, I do just ignore their presence and tip 20% on actual bill---just talking about freebies)

So I go 20% on the actual, pre-coupon bill, plus 50% of what the free stuff is worth

Don't charge my family for drinks that would have been $2.50 each? You saved me $10, so $5 back to you. Don't charge me for $8 worth of beer? $4 (round up to $5) I'm giving back.

You would have spent that much and more (tip on top) if a normal server had charged you, so I have no trouble thanking them like that.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: UDPs need not enter (tipping question)

Apr 28, 2021, 8:36 AM

#2. Always tip according to what the bill would have been. But probably more than that if they hook you up with a free drink often.

My favorite bartender at a place I go to regularly for HH on Thursdays will float a free drink or two to me. I always make sure I overtip her.

I can be a heavy-handed tipper for good bar staff, but I look at it this way. They're taking extra care of me. That extra money won't break me. And they probably have to deal with my BS in some way or form.
