Pulling from an earlier post: Ali or Tyson in their primes.

Sep 16, 2021, 10:29 AM

Who ya got?

First, APM will give Ali the title of GOAT due to his longevity and his impact beyond the ring. And yes, he was great in his prime. Problem is, we didn't see most of his prime. He was sitting out protesting Vietnam.

We did see Tyson's prime. It was brief, but when he had Cus D'Amato in his corner, Tyson was the best there has ever been, IMO. After Cus died, Tyson did OK until he ran into someone who could stand with him and counter his style. He was never the same boxer afterwards and of course he did jail time, etc.

So I'll give Ali the GOAT title, but it is one of those things we can never know. I think early Ali and early Tyson would have been an fascinating match-up. Both elusive, using movement. Tyson with more power. But if Tyson couldn't catch Ali, Ali could wear him down. Then again, all Tyson would have had to do was catch Ali with his uppercut and it'd be lights out.

Ali all day! He beat Sonny Liston in his prime who ........

was a brute like Tyson.

Then not in his prime he outsmarted another puncher in George Foreman.

"Ali, boma ye!"

Ali was a d*ck to George. Name calling, etc. Yes, Alit was tough to withstand the beating. Probably also cost him his brains.

And gotta admire George for his longevity.

you misspelled "Joe Frazier"

Sep 16, 2021, 11:45 AM

I always hated Ali because I was a huge Joe Frazier fan (he was from Beaufort, actually met him when I was a kid). They way he treated Smokin' Joe was unforgivable.

Agree with Joe, Ali was a "scamboogah".
Tyson gets my vote.

"I hated Ali," Frazier admitted to Ali's biographer Thomas Hauser in Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times. "...I hated that man. First two fights, he tried to make me a white man. Then he tried to make me a n--ger. How would you like it if your kids came home from school crying, because everyone was calling their daddy a gorilla?"

If Ali knew he'd gone too far, he showed no sign, doubling down on the ugliness in subsequent television appearances.

"Joe Frazier should give his face to the Wildlife Fund," Ali boasted. "He's so ugly, blind men go the other way. Ugly! Ugly! Ugly! He not only looks bad, you can smell him in another country! What will the people of Manila think? That black brothers are animals. Ignorant. Stupid. Ugly and smelly."

Get in their head and you have won half the battle.

Marciano 49-0 with 43 KO's. He's my pick. Haha my dad loved Rocky, didn't like Ali. Ali grew on me though, very smart and funny.

I think in their prime, Tyson would have gotten inside Ali and taken him out. He threw more thunder than Foreman or Frazier and like Frazier, could knock you out with a 4-6" quick strike. No wasted motion from Iron Mike.

Tyson

Sep 16, 2021, 11:17 AM

He was a vicious first-round monster and I'm not sure Ali's style of boxing could have gone the distance with him. But if he could take Tyson to multiple rounds, I would start giving him the advantage. You pretty much covered that.

I feel Tyson in his prime was a freak boxer that we may never see again.

Sean Tyson was a straight up gangsta.

Tyson wouldn’t get close enough to land that uppercut. People remember rope a dope, but Clay/young Ali had some power too. I think Ali, mid-round knockout.

Joe Louis greatest Heavyweight.

Sep 16, 2021, 11:57 AM

Ali 2nd over Tyson, Foreman, Frazier, etc.
Louis was champ for 12 years and defended his Title 25 times!

Open up all the divisions and you have Hagler, Hearns, both Sugar Rays, Jake Lamotta, Duran...
