Tyshon Dye thoughts

Feb 12, 2013, 4:02 AM

I was a little distracted while I wrote this so please excuse me if it is lacking in comparison to my other scouting reports.

Tyshon Dye

6'1 205lbs

You can't help but notice this guy is big. He looks to have a very strong lower body and a low center of gravity as well. He is a power back with great break away speed. He is a monster at breaking tackles. He constantly will lower his shoulder and power through anything that gets in his way for those 3 or 4 extra yards.

Dye is great at running behind his blockers until a crease opens and then exploding through the hole. He is great at using his balance and bouncing off tacklers when they don't wrap up. He has a strong spin move that lets him slip out of defenders arms who try to wrap him up. He doesn't have the speed of Barry Sanders but if you compare the tapes it is a very similar running style. I am not saying he is the next Barry or anything like that just giving you a mental picture of how this kid runs. In his film he shows a great set of hands and shows he has the ability to be a weapon out of the backfield. He is very comparable as a runner to James Davis.

He is left handed and you will see that he prefers running with the ball in his left hand. This is a problem that he will have to overcome and fix at the collegiate level. I am a stickler for ball security and all though this kid delivered monstrous hits and held on to the ball he will have to learn to switch hands to which ever side he runs to.

In his film it shows him throw two passes while faking a run. This isn't weird in high school to have a few trick plays drawn up where the RB rolls out and then throws to a wide open receiver. The thing that made this different is that Dye is left handed and so he fakes the run to the left instead of the right which is where 90% of trick plays go to. When I saw that it blew my mind because I don't know if I had ever seen that.

There is one big factor that with Dye that I haven't heard many speak about. During his teams 8th game of the season he suffered a season ending injury. During the first half Dye broke his ankle. He missed 2 games his senior year and ended his year with 817 yards and 12 touchdowns. In a recent interview he said he felt at about 98% now. He said he is lifting weights and running again and not feeling any pain. The real question will be is he 100% when he steps on campus? Did he lose any speed or power? If he wants to make an impact as a true freshman then he will need to be ready the first day.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Hot Rod, Howard, and Brooks. Dye and Gallman will both want to push for playing time so there will be a lot of competition at the RB spot. Hot Rod should be the clear #1 but after that anything is up for grabs in my book.

It will be nice to have a bigger back that can run through people!!

Not sure I follow you on the "problem" with preferring to carry the ball in his left hand! Don't right-handed RB "prefer" to carry the ball in their right hand? Switching the ball to the outside hand is overrated and there have been TONS of GREAT RB over the years who didn't switch...in fact, many argue that switching makes it more likely to lose the ball.

This just isn't true. If you have the ball in the inside arm you lack the ability to keep people away from the ball. It completely rules out the use of the stiff arm to break a tackle.

I'm glad Rod is the front runner...

he really has been buried in the depth chart before last year. Perseverance pays off.

We need these big power running backs. When we went up against above average D-lines, they didn't respect our running game. I watched the LSU, USCe, game last year and LSU ran right at Clowney. Taking him out of the game more or less. That's what I think a power running game does for you. A fast DE will have to stop and think for a second. They running, or are they passing? I just hope it's something that will wipe that smile off Clowney's face.

Hot Rod is our guy. Behind him we have two good backs

in DJ and Zac. I'm sure Dye and Gallman both have been promised--sincerely--that will compete for pt, but here's the deal: we'll want to RS them both if we can. I think we will because they'd have to be clearly better than what we've got on campus to avoid the RS. If that happens, I'll be thrilled. That would mean we've got some Sammy-caliber talent in the backfield.

Rod has earned his position through hard work and perseverance. He's a baller. I'm confident he's our starter. It's a question of whether Dye or Gallman prove to be better than either DJ or Zac.

David, I understand the logic in your reply

But you know as much as the next guy that it's all about play during camp. I don't think Ty gets the starting job game one, but I certainly think he could earn it during the season. Everything I've heard about this kid has be that he's a game changer. I would be VERY surprised to see him RS. Gallman... not so much.

If that were the case, I'd be ecstatic, as I said above. That would mean he's just too dayum good to RS. I have a lot of confidence in the guys we have, though. And it's always a benefit if you can RS a player with a lot of potential.

Agreed. I think we're getting to the level of a program

Feb 12, 2013, 10:13 AM

where it's not so much that you back ups can't get the job done, it's that they are SOLID players, but the guys in front are that much better.

Don't get me wrong, I think every schooly RB on our roster right now is a TALENT and could hold they're own as a starter at any given school.

I think it's also possibly that we see a thunder/lightening type rotation with Hot Rod and Ty Dye.

In short, he's big, fast, powerful...exactly what we need...***

Feb 12, 2013, 8:15 AM

Had put on some size last year. I thought he showed some flashes of what he is capable of in the few carries he got. DJ has great balance. My only concern with him is what he does with it when he is "the man". When A.E. went out injured at GT 2 years ago DJ seemed to disappear.

I don't believe they teach backs to switch now days. I think

Feb 12, 2013, 8:25 AM

the feeling is that they have better ball security hold it in the same hand all the time.

Ball Security

Feb 12, 2013, 8:41 AM

I too observed that ball security could be a problem. My concern isn't the changing hands as much as he carries very loosely. I saw a lot of space between the ball and his body, and the will lead to alot of fumbles in college.

If he picks up blocking schemes, he will see the field a good bit.

Redshirt thoughts

Feb 12, 2013, 12:28 PM

I think we will redshirt one of the two. Either Dye or Gallman and I believe it will be Gallman but what do I know. Why I think we are only going to redshirt one is because we plan on bringing in another 2 or 3 backs this coming recruiting cycle. We have 2 committed and CJ Fuller and a couple of other RB are still on our boards. That is just my thoughts.
