Just musing here...broad brushes are always in vogue

Apr 30, 2021, 7:51 AM

I didn't listen to it, but I saw a quote from Senator Scott (whom I respect greatly and enthusiastically vote for), something to the effect of "we are not a racist country". I agree with that, for a couple of reasons.

First, a country can't be racist. People are racist, or aren't. Anyone trying to characterize a larger group of people based on the attitudes and actions of a subset, are in error.

I also think the label "racist" is used too much. I prefer a narrow definition of the term: someone who thinks a certain class of people is inferior, based on skin color.

I think when most people use the word "racist," they're talking about something more broad, that I believe contains a lot of nuance. I'll speak for myself, and let others judge their own heart. I endeavor to treat all people with respect and grace, no matter where they are from, or what they look like. I am not always successful at that. I am aware that I have prejudices that I have to intentionally overcome on a daily basis. It is not always an easy, natural thing to disregard the appearance or background of people. It takes effort. I know some people who, according to my observation, have more prejudices than I do, or make less an effort to overcome them than I do. I know people who likely have fewer prejudices than me as well.

Point is, when you easily say "so-and-so is racist," or, especially, "America is racist," you're likely missing an opportunity to understand something more complex. America being a better country, with regard to respect to all people, starts with me, on a minute-by-minute basis. And that's my primary concern.

Two thoughts....

Racism can be negative or positive. For instance saying Asians are good at math is technically a racist statement.

Second, if only this same thought applies to owners of firearms.....

“Anyone trying to characterize a larger group of people based on the attitudes and actions of a subset, are in error.”

saying Asians are good in maths is racist because it puts

unfair expectations on Asians. If we keep are expectations low enough, then everyone is good at maths!

1. That's why I prefer the narrow definition. I don't believe saying someone positive about someone can be racist, by my definition of the word. It can be obtuse and potentially ungracious, which is what I would call saying "Asian people are good at math". I am good at math. My friend Jin is good at math. My other friend Ganesh is terrible at math. These are more appropriate statements.

2. Obviously, the attitude should apply to all cases and issues.

There is

Bias/Discrimination - most prevalent, often mistaken for racism, some systemic exists
Bigotry - getting close, not near as prevalent as bias
Racism - an individual thang

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, no, no. There is no "positive racism".

You just completely bastardize the meaning of the word with uses like that and ultimately arrive where we are today, with the word so diluted that it's meaningless.

That's like saying "There's negative bulimia and positive bulimia."

we're just a normal, not racist country that still has racist laws on the books and promotes racist policies like the "war on drugs", and building walls along our southern border to keep brown people out. Then of course there is a large swath of the Republican party that actually believes that whites are the most persecuted people in the country.

Pls list racist laws...***

that such a racist country would attract more immigrants than any other country in the world. Seems odd to me.

you should focus on character instead of race

Its inherent to human nature to be surrounded

By people you are similar to ...

Every big city has “ethnic” pockets ...

Little Italy
Chinatown
Little Havana
Etc

Liberals want to blend everyone together so they are like minded so there is never conflict

Problem is that heritage identity and cultural pride would get lost in this liberal utopia

think "you're better than" someone because of their "color"/culture/nationality. It's a Harsh/NEGATIVE, disgusting thing to be a "racist". To call someone a "racist" (no matter your "color") is a strong statement that better have heavy justification in order to call someone that IMO.

society in general in today's world is so "petty" and will lash out and call "RACIST" on such statements like:

"White men can't jump"
"Chinese are great at Math"
"African Americans are awesome at Basketball"

to me, those above statements are NOT racist, they may be exaggerated generalizations based on the per capita comparison statistics of the identified race and typically when those types of statements are made they are either in a complimentary tone for said race or said in a joking manner as to "put down" the person's own race who's making the statement............That's why when COMEDIANS make "racist" jokes everyone laughs (most everyone) b/c they know GENERALLY SPEAKING those stereotypes/statements are "true"
