Turnover margin

Last year we finished 84th in turnover margin per game [-.02] yet still won the national championship.
In 2015, we finished 60th with +.1 yet played for the national championship.
In 2014, we finished 32nd with +.5, and in 2013 we finished 34th with +.4.

So basically our increasing level of talent has made up for a decline in turnover margin per game. No better example than vs Louisville in 2016 where we were -2 in turnover margin.
If "best is the standard", this is one area that definitely needs to show improvement.

We'll need to drastically cut down on turnovers this season. Especially early on with all the breaking in of the newcomers on offense.

Could you provide an analysis of kickoff return coverage?

I think improvement here is important too, but I'm too lazy to look up the numbers.

Special Teams S&P+ -0.6 85 Category------------------Rate---------Rank FG Value (per kick)-------0.01---------65 Punt Success Rate---------48.4%--------98 Kickoff Success Rate------72.4%--------70 Punt Return Success Rate--48.6%--------71 Kick Return Success Rate-- 44.1%-------62
We were 85th overall in special teams (out of 128 teams) which is definitely bad. We were average at FG kicking, horrible at punting, slightly below average at KO coverage and returning punts, and average at returning KOs.
Special teams, as a whole, still has a ways to go. 2015 coverage and return numbers were abysmal though, so there was some improvement there. Kicking regressed a little bit in 2016 (both punting and FGs).

That's some fuzzy maths, Bob. Can you put it in pie chart?

I'm not going to believe this until I see it in a pie chart.

What are you implying Bob? What?

When our team hits the field, throw the statistical analysis out the window?
Numbers lie?
We should be more generous with the ball and turn it over more, is that what you're saying?
Personally, and this is just me, my philosophy is, you always win when you procure more points at the final horn than the other team. That's the way I see it.

You are spot on. We made a lot of games closer than they should have been and even lost a couple along the way. The fact that we have overcome this speaks volumes about the talent that Dabo&co have developed over the years. We should have back to back titles right now. Not complaining at all but I believe the coaches will get this trend reversed.

Another way to interpret this is with all the three and outs our defense produces, a punt by the opposition is like a big turn over. Just sayin!

We made the opposition punt a lot on third down last year. That is just like a long pass interception and a turnover to some teams. Just saying you can mess with any numbers you want to, but more points than the other team wins games.

I don't remember any third down punts last year. Do you have numbers to back that up?
