Clemson now has the #1 defense in college football

Dec 8, 2019, 10:54 AM

We didn't play overly well against UVA - anybody who'd seen Bryce Perkins play could have told you he was going to do some damage - but Clemson still winds up with the #1 defense in college football anyhow...because OSU did even more poorly against Wisconsin last night.

Coming into yesterday, Ohio State was #1 on D by a whisker, allowing just 232.2 yards per game.

Clemson was #2, allowing 232.8 yards per game.

Clemson allowed 384 yards against Virginia. OSU allowed 432 to Wisconsin.

Clemson now stands at 244.43 yards allowed per game. OSU is now at 247.72. Clemson's also way ahead in scoring defense - we allow just 10.6 points per game, OSU 12.5.

Our D isn't perfect, but it's still the best in college football. We're also better than OSU on offense...coming into this week we averaged 541.8 yards per game, OSU 534.6...I haven't bothered to do the math for the stats but it got even worse because we got more yards against UVA than OSU did against Wisconsin as well.

Short version - OSU is very, very good...but we're better on both sides of the ball than the Bucknuts are.

No telling. Look forward to finding out. This wait is going to be too long.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We are no Wisconsin on offense.

Dec 8, 2019, 11:00 AM

We should win comfortably. Now their offense is good and our defense had a few failures last night but hard not to give up points when your offense is scoring fast and often. The first two drives would be my only concern. Thankfully intercepted the first. Ultimately we settled in and did what we wanted. Ohio state won’t come back from a deficit to beat us.

Venables didn't scheme to hold UVA under 300 yards

Dec 8, 2019, 11:04 AM

He schemed to keep Perkins from generating tremendous heartburn, yet also get a feel for how well the defense could contain a QB like Perkins. The game was perfect for semis prep against a mobile QB. Lots of tape, strengths...breakdowns. That's the value of last night's game...and a display of how talented Perkins is, too.

Per usual Salt, great take.

My only real concern coming out of last night is that

Dec 8, 2019, 11:01 AM

we didn't do a good job getting pressure on Perkins despite Virginia being 116th in sacks allowed on the season.

We did get credited for 2 sacks last night, but i felt overall we did very little to disrupt Perkins and UVA generally did a very good job handling our blitzes.

Re: My only real concern coming out of last night is that

Dec 8, 2019, 11:07 AM

Exactly. Its an issue and has been. We didnt even get a sack from a DE I dont believe. Also, UVA isnt some good offense. Miami who sucks held them to 9 points. Venables is the master. He will come up with something great. He knows our flaws. Simmons will have a few sacks over the next couple of games I bet.

Trying to sack a QB like Perkins with

Dec 8, 2019, 11:21 AM

DE's is a formula for disaster. Their priority is to hold the edge...do NOT let him get outside. If DE's sacking the QB is the metric, Fields will have a 'day' against Clemson. It's unwise to scheme to a QB's true strength, running in the case of Fields...and limiting run and pass against Perkins, since he does both really, really well. Perkins/UVA would have given UGA fits. I'm not sold on the SEC...Bama came back to the pack this year...the tide didn't lift the boats. (no pun intended)

It goes beyond that game. Our DE's dont get a lot of pressure. Also, there was no recipe for disaster vs Perkins. UVA sucks.

hoping thomas finally breaks out

so far though he hanst lived up to the hype imo

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our whole D-line is doing exactly like it is supposed to

Dec 8, 2019, 12:16 PM [ in reply to Re: Trying to sack a QB like Perkins with ]

for this scheme. They need to take up blockers. Our scheme right now is to funnel everything through Simmons. That is in part why Simmons is having such a monster year. Everything goes is designed to free him up to make a play. Fortunately, Simmons is good enough to handle that type of pressure.

The UVA mentality was similar to the NCG last year. A completely different look, but same mentality. Take away the best that UVA has (Perkins scrambling) and make them try to beat you somehow else.

NCG was take away the deep ball from Tua. People say we gave up a lot of yards... and we did. BV was conceding the whole field and underneath to Bama as long as they dont get over the top. Then into the redzone, the field tightens up so the deep threat is now taken care of with the back of the endzone. Now we can play more aggressively against the run and underneath without the threat of the deep ball. And Bama couldnt move the ball once that happened.

We're playing mostly a 3-man front this year, dude.

We're getting our pressure from blitzes. When you're playing a 3-3-5 stack like we are you can bring it from anywhere and we pretty much do.

UVA's OL just did a fantastic job of identifying and communicating last night. Very impressive for as a young a bunch as they are.

Yep!

Moving forward I think the scheme will have to change; but for a guy like Perkins we did what we needed to do. As I stated in earlier post - Virginia would not be ranked as high going into the game yesterday or pre-season or the early part of the season if they suck. They are a good football team that is well coached and they have a dynamic playmaker at QB. Solid job getting it done versus the Cavs.

We looked like we were trying to contain him

Dec 8, 2019, 12:15 PM [ in reply to Trying to sack a QB like Perkins with ]

And not sack him as much

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep ... Va Tech over ran him a bunch and he burned them

Dec 8, 2019, 9:03 PM

We just tried to contain him.

A few times doing that seemed to give his receivers time to get open, but we picked our poison and it was far from lethal.

It’s really hard to be too critical of anything our defense has done the entire year save a blip in Chapel Hill, and even then they were held to 20 points and our offense should have made the game a runaway.

Dec 8, 2019, 12:57 PM [ in reply to Trying to sack a QB like Perkins with ]

Exactly. I admit the DE's pass rush has been a bit of disappointment this year but if those guys pin their ears back against a QB like Perkins or Fields they will get roasted. Contain is the name of the game.

Dabo can add “We ain’t UGA and we ain’t Wisconsin”

Dec 8, 2019, 11:22 AM

Sure, UVA exploited quick hitters and favorable matchups against our secondary; however, UGA and Wisconsin showed us a thing or two about how to play LSU and 031O State (in UGA’s case, what NOT to do), but also, early in the SECCG, the UGA receiver’s stunk it up, with Fromm completely imploding the second half. In the B1G game, Wisconsin ran out of gas.

Offensively and defensively we are better than anyone either team has played; so I’m feeling pretty good about how we’ll match up.

The beauty of the CFP is now ONLY the scoreboard gets a ’say’.

Yards per game etc. are over hyped; a lot depends on who you have played. Statistically, our defense may be number one right now, but it was not overly impressive yesterday. Of course, one could argue that the Chickens had over 600 yards against us last year with a very average QB, but look what happened against ND and Bama.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Virginia was ranked #23

A bunch of why people are up in arms a bit is because supposedly nobody in the ACC is any good. I want to ask you this then - how is it possible for Alabama and Ohio State to dominate the leagues they are in for long periods of time without any questioning of the "other teams"? Bama won by an average of 29.1 points against SEC competition but no flag was raised. Many teams raise or lower their games based on the competition! I think despite the perceived lack of competition - we have shown ourselves worthy against teams who had to go through a perceived tougher schedule. I say perceived because, politics more than what I see on the field has some of the Big 10(especially) teams constantly ranked. Same with some of the SEC teams. Virginia was ranked in the pre-season top 25 I believe #21 so it's not like they were an unknown around the country coming in.

I do think you have to ask yourself in the years Clemson went on to beat all the teams certain posters "don't say suck" who did Clemson play? Who did Clemson build their #1 defensive reputation off of; yet went on and forced that same thing upon a so called worthy opponent?

Last year we were the only team to beat Bama (and w/ Tua healthy). This year we may have two similar hurdles to jump.
