Trivia #1 - We have our own holiday?

Jun 28, 2022, 10:48 AM

Happy Carolina Day!

I have to admit, I didn't even know what it was, but apparently it's today. So party down, holiday revelers!

Why do we celebrate this storied and august date? Even though it's in June? Here's your clue.

Close Enough!

Even though Fort Sumter didn't exist yet, Fort Sullivan did. And the commander of Ft. Sullivan, William Moultrie, flew this flag in a 9 hour battle to ward off a 9 ship British invasion fleet in 1776.

It was the first victory in SC during the revolution, and it was a good thing because we had the 2 greatest rebel defeats of the war at Charleston in 1780, and at Camden, trying to recapture Charleston also in 1780. But forget all that bad news. We won!

Congrats to McLovin, victor of the moment!

so I assume it has something to do with us using those in the wall of Fort Sumter (iirc), which is the tie in to the state flag.

I’m gonna say fort moultrie and battle of Sullivans island

Jun 28, 2022, 10:56 AM [ in reply to Dem's palmetto trees in the pic ]

The cannon balls got absorbed by the palmetto trees which made up the fort which is why the palmetto tree became our state tree and on the flag.

I'll have to give an honorary victory to JohnFBell for actually getting the RIGHT answer. That should count as least as a consolation prize or something.

Nice work!

It also helps how many times I went to Sullivans island

Jun 28, 2022, 11:08 AM

And toured that fort and read the plaques. Pretty cool they used the fort during WW2 and turned it into a modern battery (at the time). I’m sure those German U Boats were lurking.

Re: It also helps how many times I went to Sullivans island

Jun 28, 2022, 11:18 AM

Yeah they were pretty successful actually. More than we ever wanted anyone to know. Operation Drumbeat parked a lot of u-boats off NYC and Boston, and they had an even better time of it in the Caribbean...maybe 100-150 tankers sunk. A real untold story. And so they were transiting the Carolina coast that whole time too.

Apparently there is a Fort on Clemson's Campus

Jun 28, 2022, 11:09 AM

and it taint Fort Hill. Anyone know what it is?

McJr and MsLovin were guests of the Archaeology? department at Clemson and were able to "dig in" to the site with students the last couple of weeks.

I proposed at the Battery in front of the Defenders of Fort Moultrie statue that commemorates this date. Coincidentally we chose June 28th to get married. Didn't even realize it until years later.
