Trevor Lawrence will redshirt

Sep 18, 2017, 8:59 AM

And that's a dang good situation for Clemson to be able to do it!

-6 good QBs on the roster
-Named starter, KB
-KB, ZC, HJ, CB, and TI ... and now TL

Re: Trevor Lawrence will redshirt

Sep 18, 2017, 9:01 AM

Wrong, he is the best QB to come out of high school in years. The current QBs will have to work to keep him from being the starter forget about red shirting.

Hey ONE..how do you know that!

Have you been talking to DaBO?

Re: Trevor Lawrence will redshirt

Sep 18, 2017, 9:04 AM

Probably won't redshirt. But if KB keeps playing the way he is right now the only qb battle going on next year will be for backup

1 or 2 may attrite

Sep 18, 2017, 9:08 AM

And if he is proving to be the second best behind Bryant they may want to get him snaps before he starts in 19.

The only problem with that scenario is we likely lose one or both of cooper and johnson to transfer.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 1 or 2 may attrite

Sep 18, 2017, 9:28 AM

That's going to happen anyways. No way we keep all these qbs, and that's not a bad thing. I think we lose at least 2, maybe even 3. In my opinion, when TL wins the backup job next spring, hunter Johnson and zerrick cooper transfer. This leaves us with Bryant, Trevor, Israel, and Brice. That is still a really good group of qbs.

Re: 1 or 2 may attrite

Sep 18, 2017, 2:25 PM

I would guess there are as many as 100 D1 schools who wish they were faced with this over abundance of four and five star QBs. If any of our current group would express a desire to transfer, each one would have more offers than they had in high school.

and probably all would start for most of the Top 25 teams in the country.....only Dabo could get all these guys to come to Clemson to get their shot here......Go Tigers!!!!!!

Unlikely

Sep 18, 2017, 9:08 AM

Doubtful the kid will be here 4 years.
How would redshirting benefit him or us?

he is 6'6' and like 205 lbs now.....by redshirting it will give him the time to gain much needed weight on that tall frame to increase his durability & health at the next level.....could easily add 30 to 35 lbs which will help both in college and the next level.......Go Tigers!!!!!

Sep 18, 2017, 9:13 AM

LOL - Why do you think all of these great WR's have signed with CLEMSON? They know TL is coming, and he can throw lasers all day long. Talk about a FAIL on your diagnose. TL will START game ONE next year. KB2 will be running jet sweeps and doing great as a WR and backup QB for CLEMSON.

But I do agree that CLEMSON is in a great situation right now at QB. Our cup runneth over.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lawrence is going to have to earn it. If KB continues to

Sep 18, 2017, 9:16 AM

play like he has, he might take us back to the CFP this year. A true freshman isn't going to just walk on campus and immediately unseat him.

2014 all over but with a proven QB in KB. Lawrence won't start unless KB gets hurt..and even then he has to play catch up to Johnson/cooper. He probably won't start til his sophomore year if he can beat out Johnson or cooper

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It wouldn't be 2014 at all.

Sep 18, 2017, 9:23 AM

We had no established starter returning in 2014. If KB continues to play at the level he's played the first 3 games of this season, he will be very established as the starter going into next year. It would take phenomenal play from one of the young guys to unseat him.

Re: Trevor Lawrence will redshirt

Sep 18, 2017, 9:37 AM [ in reply to Re: Trevor Lawrence will redshirt ]

This isn't close to anything like 2014. KB is playing at an all conference level, and his only turnover is off a deflection. If anything this is more like FSU in 2012 with EJ Manuel and Jameis Winston. Winston redshirted and lead the team to a title the following year. I don't see TL redshirting, but he'll definitely be QB2 behind KB playing enough to get experience and take over in 2019.

Haha. Do you really think Kelly will made to switch positions as a senior after he leads us to another solid, if not great season for a true freshman? And you said he failed on his diagnosis? Haha, riiiiiiiiiiight. The only way that happens is if Kelly starts stinking and gets benched this year, and I don't know if you've been watching, but that seems pretty unlikely considering he's tearing it up right now. Where do you people come up with this stuff.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Trevor Lawrence will redshirt

Sep 18, 2017, 9:20 AM

No Redshirt! Whether you expect him to start in 2018 or 2019, he does not need to redshirt. If not a starter in 2018, Trevor needs as much playing time as possible during his true freshman year as the back up to KB. Kelly Bryant did not get where he is without live play and getting on the field when opportunities arose. This is not high school and Trevor will need time to adjust to the speed of play. Dabo will know when it's time. No redshirt either way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

agreed

Sep 18, 2017, 9:50 AM

No need for a redshirt. He will come in and QB here for years even if he doesn't his first year. Everyone knows that. It would do him good to come in and adjust before he lights college football on fire. Besides , as much as KB runs, you never know when a sprained ankle might sideline him temporarily. Trevor would be ready to help even as a freshman. Trevor will be amazing here.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If KB keeps playing like this and throwing

Sep 18, 2017, 9:22 AM

Great deep balls with good decision making, he will be 1 and done and off to the league. There isn't much of a difference than KB and say DW4, Deshone Kiser, Jameis Winston and Cam Newton. The NFL is adapting to having an athletic QB that can make stuff happen with his feet. If KB throws for 3k yards and adds another 800 on the ground w minimal turnovers like thus far, he could shoot up draft boards because of his athleticism.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If KB keeps playing like this and throwing

Sep 18, 2017, 9:24 AM

I think they will want to see more in terms of game experience from him. Won't have a lot of starts under his belt and the consensus was he couldn't throw before this year. Obviously that isn't true but that's how scouts may see it.

Don't want him to make the same mistake Jerrod Evans from VT made last year. KB needs that senior year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If KB keeps playing like this and throwing

Re: If KB keeps playing like this and throwing

Sep 18, 2017, 9:53 AM

Honestly there is no explanation other than the bears fell in love with him over some measurables and a pro day.

it honestly comes down to perception. Jerrod Evans had arguably a better year than Trubisky yet he's sitting at home. Some of the reasoning behind scouting makes no sense. I my opinion though it would serve KB well to play his senior year at Clemson

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FWIW, it looks like da Bears may have been right

Sep 18, 2017, 9:58 AM

I effing HATE UNCheat and thought the Bears had screwed the poich with that draft move. Trubisky looks legit though.

There is absolutely no way he goes pro next year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The "IF" in your statement is the key

Sep 18, 2017, 2:09 PM [ in reply to If KB keeps playing like this and throwing ]

So far, through 3 games, KB has performed very well - far better than we dared to hope, I would say. It's a LONG season. If we get back to the playoff this year, and it's more because of KB than despite of him, it would be hard to bench him for a true freshman. I really don't like the idea of a true freshman starting at QB. It is the most complicated, difficult and highest-responsibility job on the field. It takes a special player to warrant that kind of trust as a true freshman. T. Lawrence certainly appears to be one of those very rare players. If Bryant can keep him on the bench next year that means that he (Bryant) did some VERY good things and led us to a great season this year. It would be a good problem to have, and not bad for TL. Give him time to get stronger, learn our system back and front. Whenever he finally starts, Trevor is going to be a great player here.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Doubt VERY seriously he will red shirt ...

Sep 18, 2017, 9:40 AM

If he arrives on campus in January and performs anywhere near the hype, he will be the back-up to Kelly Bryant next fall and will push Kelly each and every week.

I just don't see any way that he spends a year at Clemson watching from the sidelines.

Something will have to give in the QB situation next year because all 5 potential starters (six if you count Israel) are not going to stick around.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you have to commit to a redshirt before the season?

Sep 18, 2017, 9:42 AM

If KB is the starter, you definitely want TL as your backup if he earns it, but hate to waste a redshirt opportunity if you don't need him. We assume if he stays healthy, he'll leave for the NFL in 3-4 years, but you never know. He could get hurt and need to build himself back up, or he could have a slump his last year before becoming eligible for the draft and decide one more year would help his draft stock.

I remember in basketball, Zavier Anderson was never really thought of early in his career as a key player and they never got a redshirt and then his senior year, he became a lock down defender and would have definitely contributed if he could have stayed another year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Do you have to commit to a redshirt before the season?

Sep 18, 2017, 9:59 AM

You can burn the redshirt at any time during the season. See Jake Bentley for example

If KB finishes the season strong, I believe TL will RS as well. There's no need to waste a year when KB will be back for his SR. year and to legit backups behind him in Cooper and Johnson. The only way TL doesn't RS is if either Cooper or Johnson decide to transfer after this season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Trevor Lawrence will redshirt

Sep 18, 2017, 10:24 AM

Somebody is bound to transfer once TL comes in tho, I can't imagine guys like Cooper, Johnson and CB wanting to ride the bench their entire career.

The one scenario no one had mentioned...

Sep 18, 2017, 2:14 PM [ in reply to Re: Trevor Lawrence will redshirt ]

What if Bryant has a big enough year this year to warrant leaving for the NFL early? If he's good enough to beat out Lawrence he may be ready for the league by then. If Trubiscuit was ready, why not KB?
