What's the history behind the double bye bracket?

Mar 4, 2018, 9:06 AM

With 15 teams, it seems that the 1 seed would get a bye. The other 14 teams play a game, leaving 7 winners in the first round. Those 7 plus the 1 seed make an 8 team bracket. Simple.

Anyone know why the ACC does it this way, other than to make the tournament last longer and give a huge advantage to the teams that are traditionally in the top 4 in the league?

Come to think of it I may have answered my own question....

"Well, other than that, Mrs. Lincoln....how was the play?"

Tough to play 7 games in one day

Even with just 4 games they usually are starting the night cap around 10 PM. If you split those 7 games into 2 days then teams will be getting extra day of rest at some point compared to their competition. And ultimately it makes for better TV not having games on a 9 AM

Yeah i think this is it. Logistics of so many games, $$ for more

"Sessions" ( isn't that what they used to be called when one ticket was good for the first two games, then you needed another ticket for the 2 later games)? Plus as much as the ACC loves basketball, spreading all these games out through the week on ESPN is what they live for
