Question about an observation. I noticed today the story
Jun 18, 2012, 9:22 PM

about the OL commitment from the kid going to football camp. I went to football camp in '78 when I was 12. Me and several of my friends went. We stayed in Johnstone and it was a blast. We were given a t-shirt and a baseball cap. We used the brim of the cap to get autographs. I still have mine and it is covered in autographs, including Pell, Ford, Butler, and Fuller.
Our hats & t-shirt simply said "Clemson Football Camp 1978". I noticed today the picture in the article showed the kid in a t-shirt that said "Dabo Swinney's Clemson Football Camp".
I'm curious as to when that started. Back in the 80s during summer school I saw kids on campus wearing "Clemson Football Camp" t-shirts. Did Tommy West or TB have t-shirts that said simply "Clemson Football Camp" or did they have their names on them as well?
Do the baseball & basketball camps have the coach's name on the t-shirts?
I am not knocking Dabo, I'm simply curious as to (1) when the camp's started being associated with the coach versus just the the school and having the coach's name on the t-shirts. And (2) do the baseball & basketball camps have the coach's name on the shirts as well?
I know the coaches make money from these camps, always have, but Pell nor Ford had their names on the shirts and hats.
What other camps do we have? I think Chuck Kriese had a tennis camp. Do we now have soccer or tennis camps?

The Citadel use to have "Cal Port's Citadel Baseball Camp".

More and more, kids play for coaches, not a school
Jun 18, 2012, 9:38 PM
|

recruiting is relationships and opportunity. In the end most kids want a coach that cares for them and will help them get a shot at the pros. The school is secondary except for those that do value education or grew up a fan of the school

the top programs have always recruited the best and always will. The top programs consistently have the best recruiting classes. Kids base their decisions mainly on winning, exposure, playing time, and a proven track record for putting players in the pros. The top schools always recruit well regardless of who the coaches are. Some kids may base their choice on relationships, family atmosphere, etc., and most will make those comments, but the proof is in the pudding, or in this case, the correlation between the polls and recruiting rankings.

TB was doing that as well once the facilities were in place. Dabo is a great recruiter, I have never said otherwise and have repeatedly given him credit for that. Unfortunately he can't coach. If he could we wouldn't repeatedly lose to teams with far less talent or frequently get blown out by teams with equal or less talent.

more pathetic division. And funny how if Dabo was so great in 09 and 11 we had a losing season in 10.
Why do less talented team keep blowing us out?
How did VT dominate the ACC for years despite rarely out recruiting Clemson, Miami, or FSU?
Why does GT own us despite far less talent?
I'm not arguing with you anymore. You're like Stanley & Matty. You cherry pick 1 or 2 numbers that were heavily based on poor competition and or luck but don't solve ongoing issues nor overcome far more numerous negatives.

25 like us. Auburn finished outside the top 25. TB & Dabo suck vs. OOC top 25 teams.
Everyone knows the polls are incredibly flawed. There shouldn't even be polls till at least mid season. Everyone knows and admits this, but the polls make news and give people something to talk about.
We win vs. sucky ACC teams, we get stomped by teams with similar or equal talent. We lost 4 games last year by 14+ points, 3 of them by 21+ points and the GT game was not nearly as close as the final 14 point margin might suggest.
None of those teams had better talent than we did.
We are poorly coached. We are NOT a very good team right now!

Most people considered Tommy Bowden a good but not great coach b/c he couldn't win the ACC. You'd think if a conference was so bad even a mediocre coach could win it at least once.
Most just don't agree with your sentiments that the ACC sucks. I certainly don't think anyone has delusions it's great like the SEC or anything like that, but it's not that bad.
I personally have thought the ACC has been a better conference overall than the Pac 12 or Big East the past few years. I do think the Pac 12 had the better champions though, just the conference as a whole was pretty crappy.

I get it. You are right. Coaches don't matter. Except at Clemson where our coach is unacceptable. What the players, recruiting experts and analysts say doesn't matter. It's all about the name on the uniform. Thankfully, even though you are the first person I've used this with, I hit the ignore button with you. You are incapable of carrying on a conversation where anyone's opinion, in spite of all the evidence, matters but your own. Good luck to you, and goodbye

already there how did Saban win a NC in year 3 or Miami win 4 NC's with 4 different coaches over 20 years but in between have coaches that weren't successful?
FACTS are coaching is critical, it's more important than talent, but talent is important too, esp for long term consistent success, and the best talent will consistently go to the top programs regardless of the coaching staff.
Everyone knows Lane Kiffin is a scum bag, but look at his recruiting class at Tenn. Some of these guys are great salesmen, but Dabo nor Kiffen could gets these kids if they coached at Duke or Wake or Vandy or Kentucky. The reputation of the program, the name recognition, the winning tradition matters. And schools like Bama, Miami, FSU, etc. will get good recruiting classes regardless of the coaching staff.

Dabo, but I know how it was in the past and I was curious when it changed and how the other camps did it. I have no problem with it. It's marketed under the coach's name and they get compensation under their contract for it. I was just curious as to when the hats and ##### changed because under Pell & Ford it only said "Clemson Football Camp".

I'm not saying they didn't call it "Coach XYZ Camp". When

Ford was coach the paperwork and name of the camp was "Danny Ford's Clemson Football Camp" but the shirts and hats simply said "Clemson Football Camp".
I still have my hat and tshirt from Pell's camp in '78. They both had written on them "Clemson Football Camp". Not "Charlie Pell's Clemson Football Camp".
My question was not about the official name of the camps, but when the hats/shirts started having the coach's name on them.
The camps have always been affiliated with the coaches and their name in the title of the camp. I was just curious about when hats and shirts started including the coach and not just Clemson.
It's really not a big deal, it was simple curiosity, but I should have known people would make it something more. I even wrote in the OP this is not a Dabo thing, but a curiosity based question.

coach's names, but it's possible it was much cheaper to print off a bunch of 'clemson football camp' greys.
you could use those year to year.

Football Camp". My hat is framed. As is a white practice jersey I have from the summer of '81 with most of the team and coaches' signatures. My friend Mary Barnes was a cheerleader and after my accident she got coach Ford to have everyone sign a practice jersey for me. I wore it at the Orange Bowl in '82. We asked them not to tear one of the tickets and they didn't. We then framed the jersey and the ticket together. My mom has all that stuff. I'll get it next time I go up to my parents house and take pictures to post on here. I was just there yesterday, wish I had thought about this sooner.

Better question. Have you given Dabo credit for RN?

Don't think I've seen you give Dabo credit for brining in the top overall recruit and another stud at the DE position.

I've given him credit for recruiting but TB got that

got started under TB. The kid hasn't signed yet. No counting chickens before they hatch. Also, we signed Bowers, but he only had 1 really good season out of 3.
Recruiting is great, but it's only 1 piece of the puzzle. The next step is developing these kids and motivating and inspiring them to play well. Finally there has to be good game plans and coaching.
Dabo has proven he can recruit, but big time winning takes the other pieces of the puzzle which Dabo has yet to produce.

Crump he was going to give it a rest ?
At least there should be a good Sonny and Cher tune playing in the background every time he posts. Might make it more bearable.
Nooooo . . . it wouldn't. Nevermind.
