Tommy McNamara scores again for NYCFC

For those who don't know soccer particularly well, expansion MLS franchise NYCFC - which is owned by the same oil sheikhs who bankroll the EPL monster Manchester City, which has passed even Manchester United as one of the top 1-2 teams every year in England - has themselves a monster midfield. They already had Team USA regular Mix Diskerud, rising phenom Poku, and they recently just brought in English legend Frank Lampard (who is almost as well-known as David Beckham) and Italian super-legend Pirlo - easily the most famous Italian soccer player in the last 20 years.
That is easily the most loaded midfield in MLS, by a mile. Most EPL squads don't have what NYCFC has right now.
But amidst all that, Clemson's own Thomas McNamara has somehow come back off a torn ACL suffered last year and grabbed a starting gig...and he just keeps on scoring. He did it again tonight.
If he keeps it up, he's going to hear his phone ring, and it's going to be Jurgen Klinsmann calling him up to Team USA's camp. He's playing that well. Still kills me what happened to Stuart Holden and Oguchi Onyewu, but McNamara could be the guy who puts Clemson back in the World Cup.
McNamara can play, folks. Even with that bad hair.

Well let him play a couple seasons before we start World Cup talk. I do think he's making a name for himself and it must be amazing to play with the stars of nyfc. I'm still having trouble liking them at all with the Yankee and man city ties. Plus I became a red bulls fan with Richards and Henry. With them gone I tend to stick to EPL but maybe I will have to pay a little more attention.

Awesome to watch him and Villa work together. I'm a Orlando City guy but Tommy Mac is making me realm like NYCFC also. MLS is really getting good.

The play is getting better and I think the inclusion of European players, even past there prime, is helping. Tactically they are playing the same game as the big European leagues but the skill level still has to catch up. When they call it the "beautiful game" it isn't the way MLS plays it. Little mistakes and bad first touches can slow the game down tremendously. I think we will only see the league continue to grow and get better. If we can win a couple CONCACAF Champions Leagues then it would be great to see some of our teams play the greats of Europe in a competitive environment. I hope in the future there is a way for more teams to get involved with play against the European couterpart leagues. I believe it is the only way we will ever be considered one of the top leagues in the world.

The window to make the squad is now. Jurgen's in full-on rebuild mode right now...he was well into it before the Gold Cup - we beat Germany in Germany, and Netherlands in Netherlands, both with a bunch of newbs (one of them, Jordan Morris, was still in college and is just 19!)...and then for a bunch of reasons most of the newbs were unavailable for the Gold Cup and the vets showed pretty definitively they were hitting the wall...when they tanked out in the semis against Jamaica and Panama.
Right now, if you're hot - and a young player - you could hear your phone ring, and get your chance to show what you've got. Especially at winger, where the USMNT is particularly deficient right now. McNamara might be picking a golden moment to be emerging. Timing matters, and in a non-qualifying year is when teams get rebuilt in the cycle.
Pretty sure LA Galaxy winger Sebastian Lletget would be the first call Jurgen makes - Lletget has been in just torrid form since coming across from West Ham - but McNamara isn't far off that right now. Chicago Fire's Harrison Shipp is probably his other competition. Whatever, there's a big "HELP WANTED" sign on the USMNT's midfield right now and more than one of these guys could hear their phones ring, and very shortly.

I'll always cheer for the guy, but I think Mcnamara has an uphill battle becoming a NT regular. He just doesn't have the stereotypical skill set you look for in an international Attacking Midfielder. Will be interesting to see if he gets the call for "Camp Cupcake" this Jan\Feb. (The winter friendlies are generally MLS heavy rosters, so it's pretty good indicater if a player is on the NT radar). Jurgen is pretty unpredictable in his call ups and Mcnamara has iron lungs so it is not out of the realm of possibility.
Ditto everything said about Lletget. How West Ham decided not to give that guy one single cameo is beyond me. (Not even a Cup Game)
