Tommy Bowden

Jan 21, 2014, 10:24 PM

TB was apparently under consideration for the UAB job a few days ago. UAB has hired Bill Clark from Jacksonville St. That means that TB will still be sitting at the house another year. He hasn't been offered a HC, OC, not even a WR coaching job in 5+ years of availability. Yeah, we were lucky to have him.... The best thing TB did for Clemson was bring Dabo Swinney into our program.... Although 63-17 will live on forever in our hearts, this guy couldn't get us to the Championship game or a BCS. The wins vs. SC were nice, and if SC was as bad as they were in those years Dabo would have lots if wins over them too.
Just wanted to say that- for all you Bowden lovers out there.

Bowden was there during the westzone construction, but we all know that facilities would have had to improve during those years, no matter who the coach was, and Dabo has done a lot more in less time than Tommy did with facilities too.

when the old man passes. If I was in his place, I would not worry about it.

True that.

Jan 21, 2014, 10:33 PM

If I were him I would enjoy the millions I had already made and just kick back on a beach somewhere, but be has said numerous times he is interested in coaching again.
I'm surprised he has t even found a WR coaching job, as that's what he did at WVU, ALA and FSU before he got a shot at a HC. He was apparently decent at it because he was involved with 2 NC winning teams, and atleast 1 more that played for it.

Agreed, but Bowden helped us get over the hump and start getting the program together. Dabo has done well, but the best thing he did was hire the right people for the job. He is a good head coach and great recruiter. Needs to beat USC though.

^ He will.

Jan 21, 2014, 10:36 PM

SC is going to be different this year. Clowney, Shaw and Ellington have been the killers to us the last few years, all are gone, and they have nothing for a DL this year. We will beat them big in the Valley this year, and Cole will be carried off on the shoulders of the team. Hardee's trophy in hand, goes down as a legend!

I hope so. Regardless of what we want to believe, USC has become a very good team. Our o-line needs to play a little bigger against them. Stick to the run (last 2 yrs has been working and have gone away from it) and let the big boys take us home. They have been able to do that but haven't been given that chance (o-line that is). If Dabo can win the USC game, we will be a 12-13 win team under him consistently.

He had offers early on, but they were not worth messing up his buyout over.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd think someone offered a staff position somewhere....

Jan 21, 2014, 10:41 PM

but, I have often wondered what if with Bowden and Rich Rod. Swinney made a great innovative hire in Morris and Bowden did in Rodriguez. What if Rich would have stayed a few years like Morris has? Would we have seen different results than what we saw?

My guess is yes. Bowden obviously had plenty of time to get better and he didn't, but I think we may have had much more success with Rich Rod hanging around for a few more years.

Bowden would have been good for UAB

Jan 21, 2014, 10:52 PM

IMO Bowden is exactly the type of coach they needed as he is solid at turning a program having hard times around. He did it at Tulane and he did it at Clemson.

That said, the situation at UAB is about as bad as it gets. They share a BOR with Tuscaloosa and that BOR has repeatedly gone out of it's way to hinder the Blazers football program. A few years back UAB had secured commitments from a number of donors to supplement what the BOR was allowing them to pay a HC enough to hire Jimbo Fisher. The BOR, lead by Bear Bryant's son, refused to allow the hire citing "fiscal responsibility".

I wouldn't be surprised to eventually hear that the Alabama BOR played a part in this hire as well.

Also got us Spiller and other key talent.***

Coach Swinney got us Spiller.

Jan 22, 2014, 7:09 AM

It's highly doubtful that C.J. would've even visited Clemson if Coach Swinney wasn't here at the time. Dabo got C.J. to write a promise on the back of a card that he would at least visit Clemson because he knew that Spiller was a man of his word. Here's one part of a Dan Wetzel column.

Then there was the general disarray of the end of the Tommy Bowden era, where it seemed like Clemson just stopped pushing like the others. That, more than anything, drove Dabo, then a hard-driving assistant, crazy.

"I was told you can't go recruit C.J. Spiller," Swinney said of the 2006 five-star, top-10 national recruit out of Florida who was heavily pursued by Alabama, Southern California, Florida State, Florida and Miami. "[I was told], 'You're wasting your time recruiting that guy. He ain't coming to Clemson.'

"That was the mentality here. I don't get that. I'm like, ‘What do you mean I can't recruit him? He takes my call every week. He likes me. He says he wants to visit.' "

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

What would you guys think about bringing Tommy back as a recruiter? He recruited well. Maybe even hire him as a position coach. I always liked Bowden.

If I had to have a Bowden on staff, I would want it to be Jeff.

Dabo has done a lot with those facilities. The facilities Tommy never got to use. But he is fine and happy. Enjoys his life. As he should be.

Tommy Bowden was a very decent person - I just realized how

Jan 22, 2014, 8:43 AM

unusual it would be in any profession for multiple sons to follow their nationally recognized father into that same profession. How could that happen if each son were allowed to grow up on their own terms and select their own paths?

Re: Tommy Bowden was a very decent person - I just realized how

Jan 22, 2014, 9:05 AM

I'm sure the Bowden name has helped all of them. As in any business. Tommy did well with what he had to work with. He didn't have facilities but he isn't the only coach out there who ever took over that and a losing program too. Happens all the time. Dabo has done well with all the money and facilities he was given. Tommy is fine. It's amazing people still bring it up all the time.

Re: Tommy Bowden was a very decent person - I just realized how

Tommy got a raw deal. The administration at Clemson was not dedicated to winning at the time he was here.

Re: Tommy Bowden

Jan 22, 2014, 7:43 PM

Tommy had an awesome record against SCAR, brought us our first victory vs. FSU in a long time, and brought us a lot of national attention because of the Bowden bowls. He resided over some pretty decent teams, and yes, had several underachievers as well.

He stood for his coaches, and wouldn't take the easy path of firing his coordinators to save his butt. Nobody wanted to get rid of Dabo because he had proven himself as one of, if not the, best recruiters in the country. I'm glad we got Dabo too, but there is no reason to denigrate Tommy Bowden. It was just best for both parties for him to leave at the time.

Well said and precisely my position all along. +1***
