Virtual Learning Day 4
Sep 11, 2020, 9:19 AM
|
|
-today we finally decided that the kids need to have their own names as the identifier on zoom. John’s Cell doesn’t identify the kid
-1 hour is entirely too long for a 5 yr old to be on a zoom call
-the host has the ability mute all and then also mute and unmute individuals, right? I’ve never been the host
-if you are the host and there are 22 people on, can you see them all at the same time?

We should have done this day 1 with the parents to work the kinks out.
Teacher calls on people and then tells a five yr old to unmute themselves, she could just unmute kid when she calls on them

nieces and nephews.
Parents are at work. Babysitter can't help them or keep them on task (ADHD)
Bad part is one of my nephew who is struggling (ADD and Asperger's), his mom is a teacher. Doesn't make any #### sense.

homeschool system while both parents still worked, one of them a teacher. Then they realized that wasn't a good option and begged to get into the Virtual School option in their district. They were allowed a special exception and were able to enroll. Now, 3 weeks in, they are begging to get into the face-to-face school option which is two days a week. I imagine they will get what they are asking for, but this is their own da>mn fault. I mean, she is a teacher showing up every day to teach kids, she knew what was happening.

especially alot of them at one time, will be reliving the nightmare that was getting them enrolled originally anyways.
Rule was, make a choice and stick with it. If we go face to face 5 days a week, I imagine alot of people will be coming back.

the original rule we had was you can make a one time switch.
So if you're F2F, you can switch to virtual or vice versa. But once you make the switch you're in that option until the semester is over.

to ours, and they all loved hanging out and playing when it was allowed. They've seen each other maybe once or twice in the past 6 months, at some point of frustration maybe back in June where they (the wife, primarily) just said "fuggit, let's get the families together this weekend". Kids haven't hung out since. They're extra careful. She's a stay at home mom, doesn't work. They were planning on doing virtual school like us until we could see what happens in the first month or two, at least.
School started on Tuesday this week, and the wife texts 19She around lunchtime and says "I'm putting the kids into school, this isn't working." Their youngest, in 1st grade, didn't do any of his work. The kids all have different break times, so if one sees another getting a snack, then he thinks he needs one as well. She just couldn't. handle. it.
Of the long list of things wrong with this:
- it's the first effing day of school, with a brand new routine and system, and you've made the determination that the kids can't handle it and will fall too far behind? - you spent 6 months guarding your kids like Fort Knox, and after 4 hours of virtual school, "welp, it's been a good run, kids...off to the germ pit!" - you're a fucking stay-at-home mom; most mothers would kill for that, and almost all of them would have their kids at home with them

when your kids are school age.
I imagine she had no idea how much work it would be and then saw 6 more months of missing her "me" time.
I did solo at home with the kids for 3 weeks while working 40 hours a week and it was a nightmare. This did not include any schoolwork either, just me keeping them fed and alive.

I thought being a stay at home mom was the worst

when I was a stay at home before my kids were school age.
That had nothing on being a working mom, stuck working at home during my busiest work time of year and trying to teach two kids.
I have PTSD.

expected. Many, if not most, enrolled saying that they did not have a computer or internet in the house. There was a plan to provide devices and internet to those who require it (as part of a larger iniative to provide devices to all 5th grade through high school students by year end).
What apparently no one anticipated was that there was very little computer literacy in the households that required devices. And the district did not have the resources in place to handle all of these calls. But overall I believe the district had an acceptable start all things considered. There was just too much to do and not enough time to do it.

Yeah what we are running into is what I've been dealing

with all along since the majority of my class is online anyways.
You have a large divide in generations when it comes to technology. The Boomer generation and older millennials were dealing with computers that if you hit the wrong button it would crash so they are naturally more timid in doing things on computers.
Then you have the kids in school these days who are so use to technology just working and working fast that if something doesn't come up in .2 seconds, the computer must be broken.
It's really what you first learned on. For example I came up in the transition period where computers were stable enough not to crash just by hitting the wrong buttons, but also where if something went wrong on a computer you had to go into the settings and figure out what happened.

I have zero patience for people that waste my time. Also, I'm in Toastmasters and I have zero pity for folks using filler words to try and find their thoughts

I've got one for you:
“Here’s to those who sit when they pee. We love ’em in leather, We love ’em in lace, But we love ’em the best when they sit on our face!”
Here's a second one, since you're a "master":
Here’s to the hole that never heals, The more you rub it the better it feels, And all the soap this side of h3ll, Won’t wash away that fishy smell”
