To the Clemson fans who want Dabo's head on a lance...
Dec 3, 2013, 1:34 PM
|
|
This is not your grandpa's (or even your dad's) Carolina team. These guys are GOOD. Spurrier's teams are the best in the HISTORY of their program...no other Carolina team in 100+ years of football even comes close. There's a reason Conner Shaw has never lost a home game. There's a reason the Gamecocks are likely to finish the season ranked in the top ten for the third consecutive year. NO COACH IN THE HISTORY OF CLEMSON FOOTBALL has ever had to face a Carolina program of this calibre. So before you continue your asinine tirade of "Fire Dabo," you might want to take a second to consider that. You might also want to consider who has coached the Tigers to multiple 10-wins seasons and ACC Championship games. Consider whose Clemson teams have defeated multiple top-11 teams like Miami, Florida State, Virginia Tech (twice), LSU, and Georgia. Consider who has made Clemson relevant again year in and year out on the national level. We haven't seen Clemson teams like this since...hmm let's see...Danny Ford? (Oh snap, did he just say that?) You're a great coach, Dabo, and you're just gonna get better. I hope you stay at Clemson for a long, long time. Go Tigers!

The problem here isn't the expectation to beat SCU...
Dec 3, 2013, 1:38 PM
|
|
the problem is the idiotic, moranic fans who come on here and trash their program and say stupid stuff... like...
"we own you... when Spurrier's gone you'll be back in your place"
"you're not that good, the SEC Least is terrible"
etc, etc, etc...
It's an insult to football fans and anyone with knowledge of hte game. People just need to act like they have a clue, and if they don't, fake it.
SCU is a d@mn good football team and Spurrier has made them into a very good program, period. I personally don't think that's likely to change. Now, it's time we up the ante and begin to match them.

Some folks need to do a serious reality check.
Dec 3, 2013, 3:22 PM
|

I've been around long enough to see the ascendancy, decline, and re-emergence of Clemson's program. Some older folks can remember further back than I can.
Losing sucks, but can anyone truly deny that Clemson is relevant again?
We've got good coaches, players, and a (generally) loyal fan base. Those of us who understand the ebb and flow of college football, see that we've risen from the abyss of mediocrity to a consistent standing in the conversation of the elite teams in college football.
SCAR is not our daddy or grand daddy's SCAR teams. They have upped their game by recruiting, fielding, and coaching teams with vast improvements in talent level than what we would like to acknowledge. This is not conjecture. The scores in the series over the past five years don't lie. It's painful to own up to this, but we must take a long hard look in order to improve.
Even with great talent on the field, we can't make mistakes and turn the ball over 6 times against a Top Ten opponent and expect to win.
Three years of 10+ wins after having a losing season in 2010 is what I'd call "progress". Now, the hurdle is to raise our game to overcome the likes of FSU and SCAR.
Like the dumb questions asked of coaches by the "sideline reporters", what do we have to do better to beat these guys?
Answer: We have to stop beating ourselves, first. Then, we need to stop them from scoring while we score more points than they do.
It seems like a simple thing, yet you only have to look at the mistakes that we made against FSU and SCAR to realize that - had we not made the mistakes against SCAR - then we had a chance to change the outcome.
I have faith in our coaching staff and our players that we know what needs to be done. Now, we must double down on our resolve to execute better. Simply look at all that we've done "right" this past year and know that it is possible.
Believe!

i see SO many "fans" "OK" with losing to south carolina b/c they're the best they've been in their history...............................MEANWHILE those same people are talking about how dabo has us on a level we haven't seen in decades.......something just doesn't add up
b/c 2 "top teams" that play head to head don't have 5 game streaks one way or another
that means 1 of 2 things
1. we aren't as good as we think or as our record shows......if so, 5 years later THIS IS AN ISSUE
or
2. Our coach is incapable of taking a team of "tossup" talent and beating his rival.......if so, this is an issue
and the "they're just that much better"..........don't give me that...........2009 and 2012 losses were COMPLETELY inexcusable
dabo should AT LEAST be 3-3 against them
you think auburn sits back and says "you gotta realize bama is having the best run of any dynasty ever in college football?????..........even they are 2 of the last 5

Not an excuse. It's just fact. But all these people expect to beat Carolina just by showing up because we're Clemson. Well, that's not gonna happen anymore. They own us right now, and it's time for us to match their level of play when we face them.

Been so much better than us that a 5 game double digit losing streak to them is forgivable? Aren't we supposed to be a good program now too?
Also I do think SC will go down at some point, Tennessee and Florida can't be down forever and not everyone can win. There will be cycles.

people look like idiots when they downplay how good SCU is. They are a very solid program, top to bottom.
Sure it will go in cycles...
But they have been one of the more impressive teams in college football over the last 3 years. That's coming from a football fan and someone who knows the game...
That doesn't mean I don't want to and we don't need to beat them.

This year hurts worse because we did a much better job of stopping them on defense, but 2 special teams blunders, a first drive "trick" play interception, and an offsides penalty tell the tale. They have been better by far the last 3 years, but not by far this year. It makes it worse. For the most part the coordinators did a good job. So, for some that leaves Dabo to blame...

clemson got beat by 14
look, i understand a game, maybe 2 you don't play well, but they didn't play super power football this year.......kudos they found a way and i admit that, but clemson fans "OK" the SC loss by telling themselves that they're some unbeatable power

However, I do choose to acknowledge that they have been one of the better programs in the country over the last 3 years. I irritates me to see idiots say "we should win b/c we're Clemson and their UCS, and that's how it is".
no, it isn't.... Spurrier has built a program that absolutely counters everything we do, and we have no answer for.... and he's been pretty good in the SEC.

faceless opponent" idea and "we are just going to do what we do" - is wrong. it doesnt work and this game shows it. it sounds nice for tv but you have to have some dislike for your rival. some desire to rub their nose in it when you get them down. I see this in the coots. I dont see it with us.

...what you say is correct for those 3 years. So I give you credit for that. I still hold on to my opinion that Dabo is the right man for this program, both on and off the field. if you don't believe me, then get rid of him and you will agree with me soon thereafter when the next guy doesn't come close to what he's done.

just curious though what makes you think clemson can't get somebody that can go 10-2/11-1 AND beat SOUTH CAROLINA
for the record i never wanted dabo as our head coach..........still not sold on him. I'm not on the "fire dabo" bandwagon b/c i know he's safe (i don't think he should be, but he is). all i want is 10-2/11-1 and BEAT SOUTH CAROLINA........it's real simple, i don't need ACC Championships or national championships, they'd be great, but i'll take 10-2/11-1 beat USC EVERY YEAR
I think to be this "great team/program" that most here say we are we should NOT be going 5 straight without beating south carolina whether they are good or not........doesn't make a difference

It DOES make a difference because...
Dec 3, 2013, 3:03 PM
|
|
...the better team wins on the field 9 times out of 10.
I have this same, tired a$$ argument with my father about once a week during football season. He would be happy with perennial 1-11 seasons as long as the 1 win is over SC every year. At best, that is foolishness, and proves that he pulls against SC more than he pulls for Clemson. That's absurd and unacceptable.
To expect beat SC every year is simply unreasonable and stupid. It's never happened that way, and will never happen. Deal with it.
The way I see it, you have 2 options...
1. B!tch and moan and be miserable that we can't live up to the impossible task of beating SC every year.
2. Enjoy playing for ACC championships, the possibility of national championships, and being relevant on the national scene every year, even if it means losing a few to the Coots.
Maybe I'm the weird one here, but I'll take option #2 all day long.

now I'm not one of the ones that want 1-11 beating south carolina......i have VERY simple expectations for a coach at clemson.
10-2/11-1 and beat South carolina.........I realize we're not beating them EVERY year, but 3 out of 5 is NOT too much to ask for, ESPECIALLY if we're the "great program" that we/y'all claim to be................heck i'm not even asking us to beat FSU most of the time.
losing 5 straight to the gamecocks is unacceptable and inexcusable........and pathetic.........b/c as many on here have said "we're good too"

Every team rebuilds from time to time. Things are always changing in every athletic institution in the country. And we are no different.
Guys, listen. I want to beat SC too. I don't like that we've lost 5 in a row to them anymore than you do. I hate it. But there's a bigger picture here that beating SC is only just a part of. Yes, it's a very important part, but you can't lose sight of the many very positive things Dabo is accomplishing here at Clemson. We haven't seen wins in the amounts we're seeing in THIRTY YEARS! Let that sink in. We have GOOD coaches, and they're getting better. Our recruiting is the strongest its been since the 80s. Very good things are happening here! The string of losses to SC WILL stop, and our program will continue to strengthen. And there's nothing wrong with giving SC credit for getting the job done that THEY are trying to accomplish. That's why we play the games, guys! SC is no longer the pushover they always were. Those days are over. They are improving, and we are improving, and it won't be long before you see the series start going back and forth like every good rivalry is supposed to do.
This string of losses is a blip on the radar of the series with SC. 65-42-4

why is recognizing a program for their worth akin to making an excuse for a loss?
we have to get better. we're good, they're better if only on the sidelines and in the coach's box.
i think top to bottom clemson is more talented. i think they have tje perfect system & coach to counter what clemson tries to do.
they are patient, were are frenetic to the point of spasm; fix it.

three of the last six meetings but we have managed to step on our own Johnson with golf shoes.
There are certainly some areas where $CU is better than Clemson. Conversely, there are some areas where Clemson is the better team.
In the grand scheme of things, I don't think there is a dimes worth of difference between the two teams.

And this isn't Tommy Bowden's clemson teams either. We've beaten teams scu couldn't. We are a better team when we play our game and our focused. Stop using that pathetic excuse. They haven't been better all 5 years. We were out coached. Our players were intimidated. Our players were not prepared. Those are facts.

you can't say we were "outcoached", "intimidated", and "not prepared"...
and then turn around and say "but we're better"

yes I most certainly can....
They are two different things.
We have a good team. Talented team. With good OC's who have good game plans for some teams and bad game plans for others. Unfortunately our players are not always prepared to execute the game plans whether they're good game plans or not against certain opponents in certain situations.
Dabo likes to cry about consistency and media perspective and we are one of the most inconsistent teams in the nation. We blister some teams and then come out looking like a monkey Fing a football in other games.

We moved the ball on SCUjr sat. night at will. We stopped arguably the best back in the SEC and their pass game. The only O they had was QB draw.
We turned it over at or near the redzone twice. We forced punts on them twice only to give it right back to them. We threw them two more turnovers when Boyd tried to make a miracle happen.
More yards, more passing yards, more rushing yards, more yards per play, more pass yard per play, more rush yards per attempt.
The difference in this game was CU's inability to hold on to the ball. SCU went in averaging .77 fumbles forced per game and had 3. Averaging 1.09 INT's per game and had 3.
We couldn't hold on to the ball and that is coaching. We were the better team and we crapped the bed.

Whatever credibility you had just went up in smoke with your statement "We couldn't hold on to the ball and that is coaching."
Do you really think our coaching staff doesn't preach the fundamental importance of holding on to the football? REALLY?!?!

Sure they do. They just apprently don't do it quite as well as the rest of SCUjr's opponents did.

So the fact that Tajh had the ball stripped right out of his hands is somehow Dabo's fault too, I guess...
I am astounded at your lack of knowledge about football.

Yep. Sure is. Tajh fumble, Bryant bone-head mistake, Humprhies fault. Your veteran players shouldn't be making those kinds of mistakes and not taking care of the ball. Especially in your rivalry game. Excuse me for putting that on the coaches.

Those are not facts, CUat... They are opinions except for the 5 losses. Topher's first post is absolutely right on the money! Smart man.

Ok then, so dispute what I said. If they're just opinions prove them otherwise. If they aren't facts then they can be proven wrong. Show us the proof that SCUjr is just that much more talented.

Do you mean the Carolina team that has one sec east title and then got destroyed by Auburn before getting further humiliated by FSU in the Chick? They are better than they used to be and good enough to beat us, but that is not saying much.

Where this game want 50/50 going in. These programs have been nearly equal since then. This isn't a case of Stanford and Cal with programs swinging in opposite directions all the time.
We used to have the mental edge in the 50/50 games vs SC and now they do.

few years, I don't think we were 50/50 going in. Could we have won? Absolutely...
but I think Spurrier has them in a little better place than we are. That doesn't mean Dabo hasn't done a good job and it doesn't mean we're not talented...
It just means they are ahead of us

Wat we need is a Jamie Harper fumble type play next year

to swing the series back to us. Because before that moment we certainly had the mental edge vs SC. In 2004 we were 5-5 going into the game but absolutely throttled them in every way. When they weren't very good in the early 2000s, neither were we. And as they have improved so have we. What I am saying is is that this game is almost separate from the rest of the season it is it's own animal.

Wgere SC was very clearly the better team was 2010. 2009 was a random game all started by the stupid Harper fumble. 2011 was Char Morris's worst game as offensive coordinator. Remember that Arkansas a team with a similar offense to us under Petrino was able to detroy SC for 2 straight years.

It's unacceptable for any Clemson football coach to lose 5 straight to Scar no matter how good they are. He is getting out coached every time we play them. Our 10 wins with the exception of Georgia are against nobody. Dabo is winning by being the more talented team in most games. When he faces equal talent or better with solid coaching he loses. No matter a sixth straight loss to Scar demands his firing.

Soon after you guys succeed in your mission to run Dabo out of town, you will understand that what I'm saying is true. Be careful what you wish for.
Don't know what you got till it's gone.

No excuses! Dabo beats teams of inferior talent with superior talent. He loses to teams of equal talent with quality coaching. A sixth straight loss to Scar demands his firing.

It's the intangibles that win/lose that game. It's the mentality, that coaches create, of how you approach that game.
USC came in loose and ready to roll. We came in nervous, uptight and possibly even a little scared to lose (at least that's what some of those turnovers looked like to me).
That's the bottom line. All of that has to do with coaching.

We have out recruited them over the years except on the line. Do they coach up better their players? Win next year or be gone Swinney.
