Sam Montgomery

Apr 23, 2012, 3:16 PM

How again did clemson miss out on this local product from our own backyard. I feel like we player like sam on our line and venables coaching up our linebackers we would be almost unstoppable, was he always an LSU fan? I just don't understand how we could miss with a kid like this

Pretty sure he was just a guy that wanted to go out of state from the start. I dont think it was from lack of effort on our guys part.

Yeah, he was high on LSU, Michigan, Tennessee, among others. Most recruiting services considered Clemson to be "in the mix," but he was set on leaving the state.

When USC visited here they stated he was ours to loose &

The way you and others talk about our S&C program, you'd think Sam Montgomery would be a 225 pound noodle at this point.

To answer your question, he was in the 2009 class

Apr 23, 2012, 4:35 PM

which was being recruited in 2008. As you may recall, we were headed toward a banner recruiting class that year until we marched into the GA Dome to take on Bama to start the season. They whipped us, then we lost to Maryland and Wake back to back, and Tommy Bowden was shown the door the next week. Dabo took over, and he and the staff put most of their effort for the remainder of the season into winning games as opposed to recruiting, as it is hard to recruit a guy when you can't tell them who will coach them. While I think we had a shot with Montgomery, I think the way that season played out pretty much killed our chances with him, and a lot of other prospects. Had things happened differently, then it is very likely he and many of those other guys like Holloman, Loston, and Gillmore would have come to Clemson.

Sam was the only one of those you mentioned that had we had things been placed properly would have made a difference in school selection. None of which would have made a true difference in end result. We are all better off now as is.

I know Sam personally...and it was Clemson or USC and then Les made a couple of trips to Greenwood and when he went down there it was all over. Once mom gave the OK it LSU all day.

Wasn't Sam the 5 star recruit that Koennig stated after being let go, that he was going to be taking him with him to Kansas State.
